Next Coach?

IMO Grasso needs to prove he can succeed at the A10 level before getting a shot at the Big East. He's spent his entire coaching career at lower levels and has been able to recruit high level talent there but has yet to prove that he can do that at a power conference team or prove he has the Xs and Os chops to succeed without a sizable talent gap in his favor.

Here is a prediction, not what I want to,occur:

St. John’s will be too timid to even attempt to pull the trigger on Pitino and will look for a “name” coach and the name Bobby Hurley will again resurface for the St. John’s position. Bobby has had a lackluster career at Arizona State, with fans now calling for his termination. ASU under Hurley was 25 and 31 for the prior 2 seasons coming into this season. Ken Pom has ASU as a “bubble team” this year finishing 20- 11. Hurley apparently has 2 seasons remaining on his contract so if he misses on the NCAA Tournament again this season he and ASU may believe a mutual parting is in their respective best interests.

Can't see this happening here as the Hurley's indicated they will not coach against each other.

Agreed its been a struggle for Hurley at ASU but this year ASU is 11-3 with wins over Creighton and Michigan.

If the stopgap is successful and could get to the tourney 2 of 3 years or 3 of 5 and maybe a win or 2 - you wouldn't sign up for that?
My point was that it will take a few years for Pitino to recruit players and I don’t believe he’ll be around that long to coach them. Hence being a lame duck coach waiting to retire and no recruit willing to commit to that possibility.

Pitino would energize recruiting the minute he takes the job, both HS and transfer portal. He is also tailor made for NIL and fundraising.

Doubt P5 would go after him when he would be almost 75 years old once he turns this around. This job gives him a chance to create a lasting legacy and he is a native New Yorker as well.

Your move St. Johns, not often you get shot at grand slam hire.

Please no Bobby Hurley. Seems to be a very overrated guy in my opinion

Smart was not fired. He left Texas.

And we all know the reasons Miller was fired.
He left Texas before they fired him as the hand writing was on the wall. He made a wise choice.

Looking at Pitino's record

Interesting stat...Mike Anderson's record at SJU is .575 (even with the cupcakes)...last time Pitino was under Anderson avg at SJU was in his first year at KY when he went .500.

How much of a bad look would it be for SJU if he went to Georgetown, a Catholic school after leaving Iona, another Catholic school because SJU board concerned of his past...without an interview or lose out based on a few $?

Guy is a winner and would be best hope to revitalize the fan base, get media and recruits etc.

Do not lose him to Georgetown!!!!

Someone tell him the apostrophe is facing wrong direction before he prints it.
Needs to change “Save” at the beginning of the last sentence to “Rebuild” as the time to save the program has long passed, just look at our history this century. This is a full rebuild of the program and the culture from top to bottom.

24 years at kentucky or Louisville..16 of those teams reached the top 5 in the AP poll. Incredible.

As a non-Catholic who has never gone to a Catholic school I have a question I am hoping someone here can help me out with. Why would Iona hire Pitino, but not St. John's? Is St. John's particularly conservative when it comes to these things? Thanks for the help.

Actually, that's correct. If he places the apostrophe behind "23" it indicates feet.

For example, 23' indicates "23 feet," whereas '23 is considered shortened for 2023.
