Next Coach?

All in on Pitino can get 10 years with him easily, however if for whatever reason we don't get him, I'd make a call to Billy Donovan if he becomes available. 2/3 years with a losing record and missing the playoffs if things hold the way they are now maybe bulls make a change.
10 years? He's be 80+...

Doubtful. 5-6 yr run... perhaps.

Boeheim is 78 and is an anomaly.

I just don't think school will consider Pitino. I dont think is few years at Iona without noise changes school perception.

If not Pitino, My vote might be going down the ladder and taking a chance on a younger guy like Jared Grasso (42).. I think his style matches the fan base.

Can't see Mack in NY. He's a midwest guy. Boynton doesn't excite me much either.

Grasso going from the NEC/AE to competing against Miller, Shaka, Cooley, McDermott, Hurley etc is a massive massive jump

He makes 8 million a year. In what world is he an option?
In the world where he may have worn out his welcome at Kentucky, may want to return to the Metro area, already has enough money where a few million less won’t matter. Ya never know?

I don’t see a coaching change coming anytime soon. Frankly, outside of this board, who cares about SJU basketball.

Has Pitino or any of his people even mentioned he wants to leave and coach someplace else?

Asking for Wally.

Father Shanley had the luxury of having coach Cooley at Providence and he capitalized on his success. I'm sure he is a huge basketball fan but his job is more challenging at St. John's. Improving St. John's academic standing is his #1 concern.
AD Cragg seems totally dedicated to improving the image and success of the basketball program and it is he who has to make the difficult decisions and make final recommendations to Father Shanley.
It is going to be a difficult decision but, unlike some, I don't think St. John's financial situation should play any part in the process.
If it was "the" factor then St. John's no longer belongs in the Big East in the greatest city in America.

Shanley was front and center hiring Cooley when PC was decimated in Keno Davis days. He also knows the value of a competent hoops team to fundraising and enrollment. He benefited at PC from several huge donors, but nonetheless showed his fundraising chops upgrading facilities.

Imo he is a driven, competitive leader, who won’t sit idly by accepting SJ mediocrity. He obviously has a daunting task, but I’d roll the dice with him to at least give it a great effort to extricate the program from its current state. If he fails, so be it.

I also believe Father Shanley will be very involved in a HC search if an opening arises. Just my sense of things, but certainly have been wrong before.

Keno Davis only spent 3 years at Providence and was the National Coach of the Year in his first year.
Father Shanley hired him.
The Providence program was decimated before Davis got there under the mediocre coaching of Tim Welsh. Granted Welsh was already the head coach when Shanley was nominated to be President around 2004, Shanley allowed him to coach 4 seasons where Welsh had only one winning season. Having been burned by Welsh he pulled the trigger after only two years of losing under Davis.
Yes, I agree Father Shanley will be closely involved in selecting the next coach whenever that may be.

Well if there is a home run hire out there we’d have to compete with Georgetown for him because they absolutely cannot allow this to continue and have more resources than we do to make a real splash

PC is just finishing up a dorm building in his name, the biggest on campus, given the opportunity I feel he can turn it around here.

Can't blame the board, but the fact that this thread has momentum 4 games into the conference schedule is a testament to the state of the program.
