Zags: St. John's & Slice Part Ways

A bunch of you guys have to take a step, take a breath, chill out and re-assess what you are saying.

The program is in great shape. We have a hall-of-fame head coach that we all love, another hall-of-fame basketball player as a coach of some capacity

Mullin and Richmond are in the Hall of fame as players. Ask any Knick fan how Hall of famer Isiah Thomas worked out. Or Houston how Clyde the Glide did. Just saying

Off to rough start hopefully things get better. And I think they will.

How about Billy Donovan and Fred Hoiberg in the college ranks? And since you cited pro coaches, just from the Celtics you have Heinsohn, Bird, Russell and KC Jones.

Those were crappy pros( Donovan, Hoiberg, ETC) which generally translate into good coaches more so than great players do. Was my only point. You can find way more examples of great players making bad coaches in all sports.

And all this proves nothing because each case is different. So we agree to disagree on theory and agree to agree on wanting Chris to succeed.

My only point is blind statement of Hall of Fame player does not mean he will succeed. I think / hope he will but again that is based on I liked watching him play. Like with almost everyone if he gets players I think he will be fine. This is why people are upset with Slice leaving.

My only problem with Mullin so far is we knew we would stink but the hope was the Lavin type drama would disappear. He really hasn't.
(quote) Your wrong. Everyone knew Lovitts eligibility was questionable. So far everybody seems to have qualified. Nobody got suspended. Seems to be a nice group of kids. No off the court antics. And depth.

Quick point on this, Donovan was an assistant under Pitino for four years, so his history isn't really pertinent. Hoiberg and Mullin's paths are pretty identical.

That said, I don't have a problem with players as coaches, but everything else being the same I'd prefer to hire folks with experience in the jobs they are hired for.

Ed Pinckney looked good wearing a St. John's cap a few months back.

Zero chance of this happening .. In fact a lot of Nova people couldn't wait for him to leave.. It is going to be Richmond which sounds great from a name standpoint but adds nothing to the experience this staff needs.

This would be my first objection to the Mullin regime. Replacing Slice with Mitch Richmond and not adding coaching experience to the staff is an obvious mistake. I would prefer they chose to fill a program need over friend/chemistry.

That said, still feeling very positive about the future.

I understand Happys point and yours but I am also in the fun camp that coaching is overrated. Furthermore while Slice had head coaching experience no one considered him to be a great x and o tactician. Richmond is great from a name standpoint and like coach Mullin was a winner on the court as a result of his continued hard work. If he can bring that as a member of the staff it will be fantastic.
From a timing standpoint his departure could not be better. We have no ships for 2017 as we are adding a former top 25 sophomore pg and a former top 50 junior forward. Perhaps a ship will open but there was no one Slice was so firmly entrenched with that we will loose as a result of his departure.
Lastly, and I hate to bring this up, but many were very critical that there was no minority on staff when it was first assembled. Now an opening came about and it appears from all accounts that it will be filled by Coach Richmond. Politically this is the right move.
Can PJ , Pete G, Tim W, Mike Rice all coach ?
Sure they can, but the media and others would have a field day if this position was filled by another 60 year old plus white male which would clearly hurt the program going forward.

52-70 head coaching record and didn't land a kid in his one year here.....something tells me there is someone out there that can do just as bad. It's not that hard to walk into a gym of 5 stars with a Kentucky sweatshirt on and say hey come play for cal.

If Slice is leaving because he thought he was going to have a bigger role during in game decisions, etc.. then i think this does show that there was a communication breakdown about what Slice's role was going to be. Obviously he didn't come here to leave after a year, so there was some misunderstanding about what his role was going to be.

Also, i'm not sure why an experienced coach would come here only to take a back seat to St. Jean running time outs.

What a disappointment. It seemed like we heard about Slice for years and what a big get he would be. He comes here for a year to be with someone we were told he was tight with and poof. Within one year he is gone and frankly I can't see one thing the guy did here. I guess its good since I want people who want to be here and no matter what happened behind closed doors I'll guess he just didn't want to be here. Good riddance.

Take away his one season of recruiting at Kentucky and I don't get what all the fuss is about regarding his recruiting prowess. Kentucky is doing OK without Slice's presence with major recruits so I see Calipari survived without Slice. Now, he may have gotten some decent kids at Pitt, but to think he was the ultimate recruiter for a school in SJU's current position seems a bit of a stetch. Maybe if SJU had a decent staff while at Pitt, he wouldn't have been able to pick up some of the NYC pipeline.

That said, it does appear that if he was given Associate Head Coach title, then he was likely expecting much more. Anyone would, especially if discussed before signing on.

Hate to see him go, but I think we'll survive. During games, Ritchmond was the one who had Mullin's ear almost always.

Let's face it, I liked Lavin but he had a hof coach with 30 plus yrs of coaching experience next to him on and off the court and how much did that help him? I think the right mix of X's and O's type guy would help but can't guarantee that. And yes I know GK was a "special asst"

The optimist in me wants to believe that the recent activity bodes well for the future. We have a good sharp young guy in handling some tactical stuff and an up-and-comer leading our recruiting -- all under the watchful eye of a hall-of-famer who has St. John's basketball in his blood. Five years from now, the two young guys might be a formidable duo to lead the program.

Then again, we are...

Also disappointed about Slice's leaving, especially since, like a lot of us, I've been hoping he'd end up here going back to Norm's appointment, when his named surfaced.

However, given the circumstances -- probably no openings for two years, the loss of "sure thing" Mustapha Heron to Auburn (!), the staff's decision to take transfers over HS recruits, plus Matt's relentless, gung-ho attitude and his skillful use of social media as a recruiting tool -- I've been taking Slice's loss better than I thought I would. Just hope the next coaching piece is a better fit.

Let's give some credit to Slice. A below average coach with a decent recruiting rep uses his relationship with Calapari to get a job with Ky where he recruits one and dones like all Ky ass't. coaches do and parlays that to get a great contract at SJU where it seems to me he watches his fellow ass't do all the recruiting and introduces Mullin to the local high school coaches whom he has good relationships with.

Love Mullin so much, you're calling that a right move because it's politically correct? Have you lost your damn mind? And the desperate posters after you spinning this into a huge positive and downplaying Slice, this board is full of loonies since the hiring. Pass the kool aid please it's hot out.

To add NO ONE had Lovett top 25. NO ONE. His only top 50 ranking was 41 by Prep Stars. PS I noticed RSCI has their finals for class of 16 up and Shamori comes in at a very impressive 36. Just FYI.

Slice's recruiting rep was not built at Kentucky. He was barely there a year. And it wasn't recruiting top 25 talent. But at Pitt the first time he out recruited almost everyone he came up against for NY top 100 talent. Starting with Carl Krauser and then Chris Taft, Keith Benjamin, Tyrell Biggs, and Levance Fields. This at a time when you couldn't get NY top 100s to say St Johns out loud. To be brutally honest since he took the Manhattan job in 2006 he really hasn't done much, failing at Manhattan and then not holding any job for more than a year (D League, Pitt KY and STJ).

If you are referring to my post I said we have no ships for 2017 as we are bringing in Simon and Clark , those were the 2 highly ranked players I was referring to without mentioning their names.
I always thought Lovett just cracked the top 100 , 94 to be exact.
Never said or alleged Lovett to be top 50.

Good point...makes giving him a 6 year deal all the more baffling....

in all honesty before the season started didn't we all think the same thing?

His speciality is recruiting and we didn't see results from him. Doesn't seem like a big loss.

When he left UK, their boards weren't too upset because he wasn't even the lead recruiter there. They landed top classes before he came and will continue to do so.

I don't have much of a feeling one way or the other, but if we could have a do-over I'd have liked to hire him in say two or three years when we've established ourselves and use his contacts to lure some top tier recruits.

Sense Mullin has known for a while what new staff will look like. Once details of buyout are resolved this in my opinion will evolve quickly. The Mainman comedy routine will then end. :)

i

Doubt he is interested, but I would LOVE this! Definite value added.......we would undoubtedly win more games with PJ.

I am not so upset to lose Slice. However, I am disappointed that we are seemingly not entertaining an experienced coach. Once Slice walks, the lack of coaching experience on staff is alarming. No other way to spin it.

Just got MJMAHER vs Realfan flashback on old BEB
