Welcome Andre Curbelo

I think this is a great start. Definitely a high risk high reward pickup. Given where we are as a program and the current roster, I don’t think we could do much better for an initial transfer piece.

Of course Curbelo has flaws and the jury’s out on how he will blend in with Posh. But we simply are in no position to pass on this level of talent. As others have said, let’s bring in a scorer and a shooter at the 3 and 4 positions and maintain and our core (so far so good). If we do this, I think we have a puncher’s chance to make the tournament next year. From my perspective, we couldn’t ask for a better outcome given the current circumstances.

And I will add. This is realistically the only way we're going to get this type of talent to St John's at this point (not counting kids who exceed expectations). Let's accept it and dominate the transfer market.

Another thing I expect from this is that Soriano should have a great season. Get those hands ready big fella!
Don’t forget the big man with the smallest expectations was a teammate of Curbelo’s in high school. I think all 4 bigs stand to take advantage of another playmaking guard.

One thing Curbello brings to the table is a little cockiness, showboating and brashness. We have not had a leader like that as julian and posh are more quiet, humble kids. Curbello will have no problem yelling and screaming and getting the home crowd riled up. I think he has a chance to bring these other kids out of there shells. I think that type of leadership he is going to bring will make a huge difference.

List the backcourts you’d take.

We were bringing back the highest returning assist and steal duo before we added Curbelo. Shooting is a concern of course.

And I will really disagree with you about posh needing the ball to be effective. He has thrived when playing off the ball these 2 years, and his best asset doesn’t involve the offensive end at all.
So you are calling a back court the best in the conference and then say shooting is a concern? Huh? While both are fine defensive players, great guard fandoms complement each other, one of them has to be able to shoot. And I will disagree with you on Posh effectiveness without the ball. Since long distance shooting is not his strength, his offensive strength lies in dribble penetration and finding the open man, exactly where Curbelo strength lies.

I’m not saying that they won’t be good together or cause issues defensively but when they are on the court together, one of them is going to have to guard an opposing two guard who could be 6’5 or 6’6. Who is going to do that?

If one of them develops a consistent outside shot then this could be quite a tandem but using such an expression as “best back court in the conference” with certain deficiencies is minimally an overreach.

You didn’t offer some better back courts. And for all posh’s shortcomings shooting, he managed to have a higher shooting % than nearly every guard of significance in the BE. Much of that while playing off the ball.

One thing we’ve seen from CMA teams is multiple guys handling the ball. He will still have it plenty. But Belo will run the show. Bank on that.
Makes sense, although I don’t envision Posh as a 2 (mostly because of his shooting ability) I hope he works on his shooting in the off season……..and his shot selection.

I take it back. Posh had THE highest fg% of any guard in the big East.

Does Posh move to the 2 position?
No one has to be the 2. Teams can play with two PG's. We have gotten too caught up in labeling players. Posh and Curabelo are tough NYC ballers. Whoever has the ball in his hands can initiate the offense. If Pinzon is on the floor with them, that gives us 3 players who are creative with the ball in their hands, not many college teams have that.
