Welcome Andre Curbelo

An interesting piece about Curbelo. If some fans here are frustrated by Wusu, it could be much of the same with Curbelo too. I, for one, overlook any bad because their upsides are so good.

We play at a very high pace but it is extremely encouraging that Mathis and Smith went from having more turnovers than assists the year prior to close to 2:1 A:TO this past year with sju. Seems like the constant these three years with CMA is we generally share the ball and take care of it pretty well all things considered. The Wusu stuff is nonsense when you look around the league at the guys who share the ball as well as him. If curbelo improves there then we really have something in the backcourt.

Hopefully having another ball handler limits the time Wusu handles the ball. He can be a good passer but way to careless. Also him driving to the basket is a bad shot.
I enjoy your posts and you are a real and loyal fan, but since you were a kid on these boards you have made a habit of picking the most aggravating player as your favorite lol

It wasn’t a bad shot his freshmen year. A guy with that size and ability to get to the rim is going to figure it out. Finish, find an open guy, or get fouled. There was only two guys on the roster who could get in the paint consistently and either make a play for themselves or someone else. He turned it over more than our other guys because those other guys weren’t able to create for others. It’s a double edged sword.someone has to create plays for others and for better for worse he was at the least the 2nd best option to do that.

Let’s see a list of Amase’s favorite players:

Lavar Postel
Marcus Hatten
Anthony Mason
Larry Legend
DJ Kennedy
D’angelo Harrison
Christian Jones (can we forget this year all together)
Shamorie Ponds
LJ
Greg Williams
Wusu

If I’m guilty of something it’s defending the oft-maligned guys.

Remember Mase obviously and thought you were a Geno guy
Wusu does some nice things but think better in smaller doses
He needs to elevate more on layups
Doesn’t leave his feet at all

GeNO! Nothing I enjoyed less than knowing he was gonna get 35 minutes with the ball in his hands no matter what.

Little late on this but very happy about the Curbello addition.

Curbello was definitely hurt and out of sorts most of last season but he was also absolutely awful in the 3 or 4 games before the injury when he was physically fine. Played like a guy who had been reading articles about how great of a season he was about to have instead of working on his game. His talent and potential is undeniable though. One of the reasons I love the addition is because he fits the profile of a team and coach who should be coming into the season with a chip on their shoulder after underachieving. Another guy in a "prove it" type season.

I remember the class that we recruited Posh out of there was also Curbello, Hassan Diarra and AJ Hoggard as the "hot" pg prospects in our range (not 5 stars) and Posh was sort of the last guy on that list. I will brag here and say I always wanted Posh more than Diarra or Hoggard even though they were higher ranked (Believe Posh was above those guys until his injuries and the not great AAU season that followed) but Curbello was the guy I really wanted. Today I'd take Posh over him if I had to choose but I love that somehow the road has led to me being able to watch both of these guys in St John's uniforms. Could be messy or could be beautiful but should definitely be entertaining.

and as someone else pointed out, he gives us another ballhandler. The loss last year of Dunn was huge because neither Smith, nor Pinzon (because of injury) gave us enough depth in ball handling responsibility. And Curbelo should be at least as good as Dunn's best, and likely superior in all facets.

Besides ball handling, maybe(because he wasn't very good at that last season), what other facets of the game is Curbelo clearly superior to Dunn at the college level? FWIW I'm not asking about rankings coming out of high school, that means nothing at this point.

Hey, I was a very big fan of Dunn ( not everyone on this board was for sure). Curbelo, at his best, should have better court vision and passing and may be more disruptive on the defensive end as he seems a bit more quick and shifty than Dunn (who was quite effective too). Listen, only time will tell beginning in November. But until then, I am taking, as I usually do, an optimistic viewpoint on what these players can do for us.

LOL Dunn could not make the passes that were needed, and was not near the ball handler Belo is.
Curbelo can control the game without even scoring. It’s just different. Sorry if you can’t see it.

Curbelo controlled the game? Did you watch him last season? I'm not saying injuries weren't a part of it, but I'll take a wait and see approach to what Curbelo can do here. I know what Dunn did here, and while not perfect, it was pretty damn good.

Curbello left Illinois and was getting courted by Gonzaga. Dunn left st johns for robert moses.

These 2 players arent comparable in anyway. Curbello is superior in every aspect compared to dunn.
Except stats don't prove that out. But then again, when do stats ever matter to our delusional fan base lol

Dunn was a fine player for the position the roster was in at that point but he was wildly inefficient on offense. 46% from 2 and 5-32 from 3. And he turned the ball over a lot himself. To call that pretty damn good is a weird statement. I like Dunn and as a veteran secondary ballhandler to a Freshman Posh on a team with low expectations he was fine but Robert Morris was more his level, another place where he was equally as inefficient before he split on them midway through the season.

I said Dunn did pretty damn good here. That's it. I'll stand by that statement. You feel differently, thats your opinion. Now, I didn't say Dunn is a better player then Curbelo, my original post was in response to MM's about Curbelo being a huge upgrade over Dunn in every facet of the game. I'd actually like to see him here before making that proclamation, because player stats at a high D1 level don't support that claim as of yet. Now, I'm not about to badmouth Curbelo, but if you want to bring up 3 point shooting %....
