Transfer Portal

I agree hope is good to have I am very hopeful as well.

My problem I guess, on here in particular, is getting pitino has turned a lot of St. John’s fans into being quite pretentious.

I get it. We have Rick Pitino. It’s awesome.

But we haven’t done sh!t yet. We’ve won nothing.

It’s just this attitude that we are now sooooo much better than the players we had. Some of these guys who by the way were invited back to the team… but we still have fans with this attitude that they are garbage. The reason being, everyone thinks our roster is gonna be so INCREDIBLE that all our past guys couldn’t hack it. That’s the part I’m skeptical about.

And btw bill the truth I don’t doubt pitino can get us into the tournament. All I’m saying is I don’t think the roster is gonna be some powerhouse in Year 1
100%. The reality is what we have, right this minute, is a 30M dollar coach, Joel Soriano, and a lot of posters promising final fours. For some reason we like piling on our former players, but judging by the Storr is getting (including from at least 2 HOF coaches) it’s certainly fair to discuss why Storr was not retained. At the end, of the day it could be as simple as AJ saw greener pastures or less unknowns somewhere else. Who knows?

But as it sits right now, Pitino to be competitive in the big east has to bring in a class significantly better than Lavin’s first class, which unfortunately for our team was historically good. Make no mistake, this a tall order. And if you’re gonna have this problem it’s good that RP is here because he is historical a tremendous recruiter (let’s hope he’s keep his little black book). But to think this is going to easy or to think that razing totally to rebuild from ground zero was 100% the best or only way to do it seems like looking at it with blinders on.

I saw Jeff Allen at an Alumni Hall a few years ago and he was totally ignored - I hope they pay more attention to former players and announce them when they return for a game!
What a team/tandem of Allen ( Connecticut ?)
& Wennington ( Canada?)
They should be acknowledged and made to feel welcome. Maybe the PA announcer could mention they’re in the house.

If Rick says Daniss Jenkins could start for him at Louisville it should be good enough for all of us. You wanted him as coach, yet people continuously try to override him. Guys looking at stats, looking for negatives just for conversation. Guys saying player X cannot play defense when they have no idea what kind of defense they play.

Sit back and relax and leave the driving to Rick.
Yes, he doesn’t seem like he channels “the softer side of Sears” when making roster decisions.

Nobody promising Final Fours on this site. That was a Rothstein quote.

We get that you don't like Pitino, you made that abundantly clear the last month.

I will gladly take the $30 million coach after the carnival acts we witnessed over the last 30 years.

Pitino will win big and quickly.

And nobody should ever use Lavin as a measuring stick. We were not competitive in 2 NCAA games against Gonzaga and SDSU in his two appearances. And his so called "great" recruiting class in year 2 was not all that great when you look at the success we had on court.
And then throw in:
Obepka failing a drug test on the eve of NCAA tournament game.
Pointer punching a Notre Dame player in the mouth during a loopsided loss in South Bend
Keith Thomas with fake transcript
Rysheed Jordan going AWOL ahead of a Big East matchup
Nurideen Lindsey playing one month and leaving team
Amir Garrett shoving a Syracuse player in hand shake line after loss.

Again. God bless Father Shanley.

To be fair I have no idea what Pitino's recruiting class will look, like but I will point out something about this statement:

Pitino to be competitive in the big east has to bring in a class significantly better than Lavin’s first class

First and foremost we are in a totally different world then we were back then. Lavin's class you referenced was actually his second class (his first class he brought in was only Dwayne Polee Jr., because he had a full roster returning). Lavin had no Transfer Portal to tap in to and had to bring in primarily High School talent. He also did not have an All Big East center to build around. Additionally Lavin had been away from coaching for seven years when he came here. In contrast, Pitino has been continuously building relationships while on the recruiting trail. While he hasn't been able to attract the Power Conference type of recruits at Iona, he has not severed connections to bring in that level of recruit. Lavin was very charismatic, but Pitino is too and has been a far more successful coach than Lavin has.

I agree that this is a huge task, but the Transfer Portal allows a coach to tear down a roster and rebuild in a way that did not exist during any of our other previous coaching changes.

I wasn’t impressed by the Gonzaga guards vs UCONN . But , again Gonzaga looked like the continually over rated , except for SD State, West Coast team . If Pitino wants a looking like under performing 5 star guard in Sallis , so be it . And as far as we know , rumors hsve both Posh and Storr asked back . That doesn’t sound like Pitino ran them off. Nobody on here has commented and rightly so , about any Academic issues , that Pitino felt needed to be addressed . Again , a new Coach dealing with Classroom issues on day 1 , seems to be a theme on this Anderson team .
Apparently , Fr Shanley mentioned that to Rick and also the chaos of a Anderson practice . Fans here , should not forget the Team attitude displayed on numerous occasions during games this past year . It was bad and the Players themselves have to account for that . Who ever they may be . As for Rick wanting to possibly bring in , both Clayton jr and Jenkins , the choice is his to
Make , not ours ., Both the Iona guards were involved in having that 1 point lead vs Huskies at 1/2 time . Sanogo was the difference in the 2 nd half . He won the game for them as Iona had no answer for him or Clingan

Who is promising final fours?

I know nothing.
We know nothing.
Rick Pitino, OTOH, knows it all about men's college hoops.
He's got a PhD in College Hoops, codified by HOF Creds, and he's got a vision and a plan to restore the long-dormant legacy of St. John's.
I don't know for a fact if he'll succeed but I'm 100% confident that he will.
Our program had fledging success under CMA, but all progress slipped into reverse gear last season, and the roster has been shredded in the first two weeks of Rick becoming our Head Coach.
So, yes the picture is empty of content but, by all accounts, Rick is hard at work to rebuild it and establish a sound foundation for long-term success.
I don't think it possible that St. John's Men's Basketball could be in better hands.
Trust in the Rick.

Laugh all you want, I guess you don't expect much from Pitino's teams.

Well each to their own.
The middle ground that exists between a “few final fours” and a successful tenure at St. John’s for Rick Pitino is a valley 100 miles long.

I’m the end aren’t we all just Qudus Wahab, trying our best and searching for a place to call home.
I went to one elementary school, one high school and one college. I know I'm the exception. I established bonds and friendships with my classmates that could only be established over spending years together and growing together. Sharing joys and sorrows, accomplishments and failures. Many of those friendships continue to this day. Now, as I always say, everyone is free to do as they wish, but looking back on my life, the years I spent at those 3 intsitutions, and the memories that I continue to share with my friends from those institutions, mean more and more with each passing day.

Gonzaga’s been to like 7 straight sweet sixteens or something. If that’s overrated then sign me the hell up
But , never won the Big Game . Many of which they were favored in… take a look at the Conference they play in . Other then another perpetual tourney team , St Mary’s , the Zags play in a mid tier league . Could the Zags beat Iona ? Maybe yes , maybe no . How good would Gonzaga do in the BE? Don’t know but , they wouldn’t dominate like they do in their conference . Most of our top 5 teams get into the NCAA every year . 5-6 , sometimes 7 BE teams get into the tourney . Iona gave UCOnn a much better game than Gonzaga .

Sly they were in the final a couple of years
ago for Christ,s sake. Give it up. When was the last time we or any other Big East time besides Nova or UCONN were there? Yes, they get an easy bid but they also don’t lose in the early rounds.

If Rick Pitino wins a national championship at St John’s his legacy might be that of the second best college basketball coach of the last 75 years after Wooden. While that obviously takes some luck, with the resources being provided and what he brings to the table I don’t think it’s unrealistic to be disappointed if we haven’t been to a final 4 before he leaves.
