Transfer Portal

Pitino has had two years to evaluate Clayton and Jenkins so his opinion on them will be more informed than any other. Clayton looks like he could be all-league here with a chance to play in the NBA. The way Pitino builds rosters the pair would certainly be playing with a quick lead guard and a very good 6’4-6’6 shooter.

The funny thing about Jenkins, for the Posh can’t shoot crowd, is that he improved from 23.3% from three as a soph at Pacific to 36.1% as a Junior under Pitino at Iona. Posh shot 29.9% from deep as a freshman before taking a nosedive under Anderson when he wasn’t surrounded by the 3 pt shooters he had as a freshman (Williams 44.8%, Earlington 40.3%, Cole 35.7%, plus Champ 38%).

I think you can win w/ 2 excellent MAAC guards, Soriona and stud studs in the portal.

The 2 MAAC guards are light years better then any guards we had last year.
Those MAAC guards played 2 games against tournament teams all year (Princeton and UConn). Got destroyed by UConn. Didn’t shoot well.

But please keep saying anything possible to continue to trash our past players abilities. And put all your trust in a mid major backcourt because you hate what we had.

I believe in pitino but part of me thinks this board is in for a rude awakening come November. You all think our roster is gonna be so much better than last years. I doubt it. It’ll be a better coached team no doubt. But you’re all assuming a lot of things about the roster. Assuming a lot of things about players who have never played in a power conference. Let’s see what happens I guess

You probably missed the Vince Parisse UCONN/College Basketball spot on SNY last night. Lol

Your take about November and the roster not being better than what they put out there this past season could not be more 180 degree different than his.

As I’ve said in other posts I think RP will have us better coached and competitive but I think this next year is one of transition and well have to wait till year 2 and he can recruit on a normalized basis to see the real deal.
It’s impossible to make a case for much either way right now because we don’t even have a roster yet. Sure will be interesting to watch how RP pieces it all together. I expect good things because the portal is essentially free agency. He will find players.

The problem with this year’s team was not a lack of talent----we beat Uconn on the road and played Marquette to a virtual tie, also on the road. Our problem was consistency and bad coaching. So the new coach ought to be able to take the current guys, now a year older, and coach them up. Fill the vacancies with studs as the vacancies occur. You don’t fire 3\4 of the team immediately, IMO. If you’re a great coach, show me. Take the former Rookie if the year\Defensive player of the year (Posh) and a freshman who shot 40% from 3 in the BIG EAST (Storr), and build a team around them.
Both Posh and Storr were asked to return and for whatever reason declined.

Pitino apparently thought it was both a lack of talent combined with a lack of the proper attitude needed to win. I trust his opinion. He did not take the job to prove to anybody that he could win with a team filled with players that both didn't win enough and didn't follow the rules. Only a fool of a coach would do that, and Pitino is certainly not that.

Also, the lack of consistency is a sign of a talent gap. Every player that gets major minutes in a major conference has ability. So it's no surprise that this season's St. John's team had some big wins. So did Depaul. It's the ability to bring it every game that separates the better players from the good, but less talented players. We were the latter.

Sure do wish we hired you as our head coach.

Guess we’ll find out

Exactly. Every opinion means nada right now. Once we have players. Then opinion away. Which still holds no weight for most of us who don’t know them that well.

I think until we get past this dormant period 3/30 to 4/6 we won't have any new players committing to our program. How it plays out after that will allow for much scrutiny and debate here from our posters. That said, the only true measuring stick will be what happens over time. November is when we will begin to see what is what but it might take a year or two to get a better evaluation on what all these changes actually mean. In the meantime hope is our greatest asset and pessimism is our biggest deficit.

I agree hope is good to have I am very hopeful as well.

My problem I guess, on here in particular, is getting pitino has turned a lot of St. John’s fans into being quite pretentious.

I get it. We have Rick Pitino. It’s awesome.

But we haven’t done sh!t yet. We’ve won nothing.

It’s just this attitude that we are now sooooo much better than the players we had. Some of these guys who by the way were invited back to the team… but we still have fans with this attitude that they are garbage. The reason being, everyone thinks our roster is gonna be so INCREDIBLE that all our past guys couldn’t hack it. That’s the part I’m skeptical about.

And btw bill the truth I don’t doubt pitino can get us into the tournament. All I’m saying is I don’t think the roster is gonna be some powerhouse in Year 1

I am not sure what the expectations of some are for next year but mine are to make the NCAA tournament and be very competitive in the opening game and pull it out to end a 23 year record of futility. The Semifinals of the BET would be a nice one as well. I have no delusions of Final Fours. Hopefully we will be better in years two and three. I honestly can't see how he could have achieved anything greater with the majority of last years team returning. He wanted Storr and Posh as part of that but they didn't buy into his vision. I am sure he can find enough good players to have a team that can achieve my goals. Whatever strategy he chose that's the best I can expect.

Clayton / JeanLouis / Jenkins shot as well, or better, than all of the UConn guards in that game. It was Sonogo (and his 7 foot 2 backup Clingan) who absolutely dominated that game, not the fault of the Iona guards.

Also, tbf, UConn has been playing like arguably the best team in the country during the tournament.
Exactamundo! Uconn playing like the best team in the nation. When we beat them they were in the throws of a 6 loss in 8 games streak. Can you spell aberration.
