It’s just this attitude that we are now sooooo much better than the players we had. Some of these guys who by the way were invited back to the team… but we still have fans with this attitude that they are garbage. The reason being, everyone thinks our roster is gonna be so INCREDIBLE that all our past guys couldn’t hack it. That’s the part I’m skeptical about.

And btw bill the truth I don’t doubt pitino can get us into the tournament. All I’m saying is I don’t think the roster is gonna be some powerhouse in Year 1

I think there is PERFECT storm brewing
1. Pitino and all the drive and winning touch he brings - coupled with
2. the new almost instant, unlimited transfer rules…
That to me equals a decent chance for a - sooner than later - winning season and an NCAA appearance.
We shall see.

That's why they are leaving, we don't need student athletes we need NIL pros.

Normally that would make me retch, as I used to think I would rather root for a clean program. But we need to stop looking at college basketball in the P5 as "college" ball and more like "minor league" ball.

Disagree. Yes, it is completely unrealistic to be disappointed if he doesn't get sju to a final 4.

See what Mase said above. Pitino could very easily be a huge success here and not sniff a final four. BE championships, regular tournament births, few decent runs, upset wins, BE tournament success etc

I would like to regularly beat Seton hall and providence again. That's a start

That’s the point NC , Nova gets to the final and wins 2 Championships . Gonzaga Doesn’t . And , because they have such a great Regular season record , they get a high seed and wind up playing much lower ranked teams in the tourney . There is no question that Few is a great Coach but , essentially have a easy path to the Tournament since they only have St Mary’s as competition in their league . Our league getting 5/6 teams in often get hosed on the seedings early on play tougher tourney games and get knocked out as a result . This years Gonzaga team showed not much in losing big to Yukon . Frankly , in that game they were awful .

Roy Schieder and I lived in the same building back in the 80s. He quickly became my idol. Seemed to me that all he did every day was jog, tan himself on the rooftop deck (during the warmer months) usually with some starlet laying next to him, all the while reading the script to his next blockbuster movie. Good guy. Also had an encounter with him at that Bridgehampton coffee shop. He and one of his starlets were sitting in a booth across from us. I was there with my ex and son, who was about 2. My son was walking around from booth to booth, when he decided to stop at Roy's booth. He then looked up at Roy and stuck his finger up his nose. Roy laughed, I ran over, grabbed my son and apologized profusely. Happened to watch The French Connection last week for the umteenth time. Some of it was filmed in Bushwick. That movie starred 2 of the most underrated actors of all time. Scheider and Hackman.

Gonzaga use to get middling seeds due to their conference years back. They have gotten higher seed as time has gone on.

Yukon has made every team they have played so far in this tournament look awful.

You don’t go to multiple national championship games, multiple elite eights, like ten sweet sixteens just off of your seed. Lying to yourself. They’re a great program. Haven’t won the final game of the tournament yet but the tournament is hard as hell to win.

Here’s the thing. I’d agree with you 100% 4-5 years ago but with the transfer rule changes and the NIL it makes winning quickly easier. He doesn’t have to wait 3-4 years to get his team to an elite 8 caliber level via multiple recruiting classes. Pitino can do it in half the time.

Also, if we win a couple of big east tournaments and consistently advanced to the second weekend of the tournament wouldn’t you be disappointed he couldn’t get over that hump knowing he has final four level talent here (which he will)? Overall I wouldn’t be disappointed in the hire but that would feel like a missed opportunity to me.

I’ve never seen St. John’s win an NCAA tournament game or even so much as participate in a Big East Tournament semifinal.

If we “win a couple big East tournaments” and “consistently advance to the second weekend” he would already be the greatest St. John’s coach of my lifetime by a country mile.

So to answer your question no I wouldn’t be disappointed if he didn’t reach a final four but gave us all the memories you described above
