Tournament or New Coach

First and foremost you need a viable search committee and to hire a consulting firm. That's what every other organization in the world does when they need to make an important hire.

like the same one the Jets used that selected John Idzik?

Is there any serious information out there that Lavin is even in the hot seat, other than bloggerspeak?

He just shipped his wine collection back to Marin County. Hmm.. :)

Ben Howland is far and away the best option. I would overlook the "another ex-UCLA coach" angle. He's nothing like Lav, and he's been here (BE) and done that (rebuild and win big).

Let's find a coach who will recruit and develop 4-year players that will learn to play as a team. The one-and-done A-listers are disruptive to the program and to team chemistry. I can't take the drama anymore.

The thing is, these guys were supposed to be 4-year players. Moe and Jakarr were ranked in the 30s and 40s in their classes, Obekpa 70 or below. No one (except maybe them) thought they should be 1 and done.

With the exception of Jordan, we haven't landed 1 and done players.

I posted earlier that Crean was the person I would jump at if he really gets fired. Same reasons as you pointed out about Howland.

Is Tom Crean really on the hot seat at Indiana? If he gets fired after the season, I would call his agent immediately to ask what he is looking for.

agree. I don't know wtf he is doing on the hot seat anyway.

Maybe indyredmen97 can give some insight. I know he is a Midwest guy, but it would be worth a shot.

His seat is white hot. I've been following IU (my side piece so to speak) pretty closely for 13 years, and I have friends in the know who say the money alum want him out (I don't think fans have forgiven him for getting bounced in the tourney with Zeller and Oladipo). To be honest, I'm not convinced that he's not that much better than Lavin - if at all. Great x's and o's but bad substitutions, no player control (and in games little self control). IU recruits itself so I'm not so sure he's that great a recruiter on his own (Duane Wade wasn't as highly regarded when he chose Marquette as history may show). I may seem like a Lavin supporter but I'm a frustrated fan as well who is moving in the direction of change at St. John's but I'm closer to sacking Crean in my IU brain. Pass.

Oh and the excuse they'll give is the roster getting gutted by suspensions. You think losing DLR and Thomas was bad, almost half the team is suspended. It will be rough this year for Crean

Good stuff, thanks.

Amazing because from my view, he has always appeared to be a top coach. I always liked him.

They should've hired Mark Jackson as soon as he was fired from Golden State.

Bring him in on a 2-year deal and let it be publicly known that he'd be looking to return to the NBA after his deal was up.

Then fill his staff with an assistant head coach in training like Antigua or Abbdelmassih who would handle the recruiting but take over when Jackson leaves.

It would immediately restore local credibility because none of these scumbag NY HS coaches and handlers would be able to push Jackson around because he already knows the landscape.

Every recruit would know that Jackson would be returning to the league so that would give them incentive to give us a serious look.

And we'd have proven local recruiters ready to take over when Jackson is ready to leave.

Too late for that as I don't think Jackson would sit out what would be 3 years at this point.

But that would've been the quickest and easiest transition that I could think of.

So did we in Indiana, but if you truly inspect his record, he had that one final four run with Wade, inherited a mess that Sampson left (for which he was gifted 4 seasons to rebuild), under achieved with a stellar cast, and is back to rebuilding. I think he'd be ok, but he's not a program changer. He's a product of Tom Izzo, who obviously is at the highest level. Speaking of Tom Izzo assistants, I'm a huge fan of Dane Fife but not for St. John's.

I am intrigued by a Hurley though...

but why would a kid commit to a coach who has a 2 year deal. Coaches established already get rolling extensions because other coaches use short contract against them in recruiting

Because he might give him one of those pictures he likes to take.
Also the street corner preaching is a no go.

I think his agent said players who "get him."

A former NBA head coach who would be returning to the league? What highly-ranked kids are looking to stay past 2 years? You think Calipari and the coaches who were recruiting Mudiay didn't use Larry Brown's age against him?

Most leg work is done by the staff anyway who would be the ones forming relationships and ultimately taking over. Worked out smoothly for Coach T. on the women's side.

Again, it was just a hypothetical scenario but the other option is what is more than likely to happen- Lavin and the powers that be bumping heads in an ugly dispute that spills out to the media ending up with us having empty cupboards for 2015 just to rebuild this program from scratch yet once again.

He is already leveraging an extension publically.

Ding, ding, ding. We've now hit at least two coaches who have had some success (Howland and Crean) who both have been pegged as being "out of touch" with their players.

I'd rather try a younger coach who has experienced some success that can relate to players AND teach the game.

Has been since last spring when he floated those extension rumors.
And I agree with you, Lavin won't go down without a fight. He'll want his money.

Hit, I know this is off topic but as bad ad Idzik is, I suspect the problem is ownership. Woody is a Florida guy and I think the whole "send in the clowns" approach that emerged with the Tebow hire had some influence from the boss being immersed in UF hype. If there is a way to prove that Winston is not the best next QB, it may not matter if Woody listens to his homeboys again.
