Those are sobering stats. It can't be as hard as we've made it. Marquette is now on it's third straight grand slam (I don't mind getting ahead of myself with a former Duke assistant who has been on campus for about a day and already has the #4 player in the country coming). Villanova has only had 3 coaches in the last 31 years. Differences in the schools/programs, sure, but not enough for there to be the spread there has been in coach/program success.
Can't let the fact that it's been a circus turn into a perceived reality that it has to continue to be a circus. It doesn't. Too many other similar-ish programs out there as proof.

its an absolute disgrace that this has dragged on for this long.
I dont expect Final 4s every year, but a competitive team that makes it to the NCAAs more often than not and once every few years has a deep run is not something crazy to ask for.
The schools at the top of the list all have that.
I have no problem if we try, if we send out a feeler and get a response by all means go for it but I know the Hurleys a very little and I do not think for a second Danny or Bobby would come to SJU. I believe Danny would think URI is a much better job right now than SJU. Agree on the point guard "mentality" reference,. If they go for it, here's hoping I'm wrong again.
My big concern is my feeling that the "money" people at SJU are stuck with a pre-BE breakup mentality. I firmly believe we have to do it a different way, using a VCU type approach (molding middle tier type players iinto a reallly good TEAM). I stated well before last night that I thought Lavin's recruiting approach would not work at SJU anymore and while I did believe Briscoe at the end was coming, unfortunately, I was right.on the former point. Being fair, Lavin was a little unlucky because my understanding is Cal pulled out all the stops to get Briscoe but that's what happens when you go play with the "big kids." Essentially betting your job on the decision of an 18 year old is risky at best. Time to root for this team and then move on IMO.

That is a critical point. Making the tournament every once in a while is not a huge accomplishment, nor should it be something we have to dream about. You can fall backwards into an NCAA bid from time to time. Making it with some measure of consistency, with a run every now and again, probably makes you one of the 50 best programs in the country. That certainly constitues "success", but again shouldn't be veiwed as this distant hope with all of the programs that find a way to do it.
One of the biggest dangers of losing is that you start to rationalize and reduce expectations. Shouldn't be the case. I can't accept that this is a job where it's that much harder to win than other like schools.

Hurley? Like his dad, these guys would be happy being big fish in a little pond. We're trying to get out of the little pond mentality, aren't we? Sure, it would work if we had a St. Anthony's pipeline. The truth is, when dad leaves, St. Anthony's won't exist anymore. Where would that leave us.
Pearl? It would only be a matter of time before he opened a topless joint with himself as the main attraction.
Masiello? Right, he knows the value of an education.
Cluess? He can win in a small conference. While the Big East is no longer the big dog, it has more bite than Cluess' kennel. Would you be happy being a perennial middle of the pack team in the BE?
Pecora? hahahahahaha!
Greenberg? Calhoun? Larry Brown? Why not just ask Looie to come back...or Keady?
Lavin is a laid back LALA land guy who, by his own admission, needs a kick in the pants once in awhile. That's how he did so well his first year...on the court and recruiting. Then he sat back and watched the smoke rings he formed while his feet were on the desk. He's busting his butt again. This should be a decent year by St John's standards. He'll work hard bringing in players that'll be a bit better than Norm's. Briscoe was the crossroads. It went the other way. It sucks. Bringing in some loser retreads or wannabe's won't change that.

There's something more than just his recruiting and W/L going on behind the scenes I think. Although they weren't good last year.

I would see if we can beat Mark Jackson's TV contract, and reach out to him. He could B.S. with the best of them, and would be a natural in a recruit's home. He should have an edge recruiting point guards. He is now a proven commodity as a coach, and did well at Golden State.
I tend to agree with your general assessment of the "usual suspects." But what exactly would extending Lavin do? I don't think for a second financial incentives would do anything. Lavin is a recruiter and SJU is not a realistic destination for the type of recruit that plays into that strength. He (and staff) worked their butts off recruiting Briscoe, Sampson and Diallo and there was a more than reasonable expectation that had Briscoe declared at least Sampson was also there. Diallo I know less about. Lavin deserves credit IMO for how hard he worked on 2015 recruiting but it didn't happen. He is not the answer because his model is just a bad fit for SJU.
I don't pretend to be down in the weeds enough to know who the ideal hire would be but get the right INDEPENDENT search committee together and those candidates will show themselves. I understand it is hard because money talks but that's the way to go.

Is there any serious information out there that Lavin is even in the hot seat, other than bloggerspeak?
