Tournament or New Coach

Tournament and Coach rides off into the sunset. I think he realizes that he can't sign top recruits here and will move on. We knew for years the day would come that the Big East would change and I fear today was our last chance to remain relevant for a long time. Saddest day since Pittsburgh.

No. You cannot blame this on the Big East. Marquette, Georgetown and Villanova all have stellar recruiting classes coming in. Plus Xavier and Seton Hall. This is an SJU issue right now.

More specifically, it's a Lavin issue

Orlando Antigua. Watch how well he does at USF this year. Bring him here, and his brother in as an assistant and I guarantee we won't have a problem getting metro - area recruits each year.

thats a sensible choice to me, antigua has all the ins in NY and Id take a shot at someone like this. One thing we've proven is retreads like MJ and Lavin dont work out.

a nice run into the NCAA's and a couple of wins once in would be great for this team.
As for Coach let him come back next year and take the heat all season for sleeping at the wheel on recruiting.
Get the wheels rolling on a real fundamentally sound X's & O's no nonsense guy that can think and adjust during a game.

Agree on getting NYC kids, would like to see how he does as HC first. .

Key may be getting someone smart & breathing to lead a search. Just disqualified Monasch I guess. Could Mullin lead that process?

cant let the "money guys" call the shots.
just because they are successful in their business ventures doesnt make them qualified to pick a coach.
need basketball people with no agenda in there making the call....

Don't believe any of the Hurleys would take the job and stating the obvious, Lavin is not the coach to lead us forward. He put all his eggs in the 2015 recruiting basket and enough said. We need to find a blue collar, roll up your sleeves, X's and O's guy. IMO, paramount is to get a search committee that includes at least some basketball people not directly connected with SJU. Every coaching selection since Louie retired has been a bust to say the least.

Excellent post Logen! I would take a run at the Hurleys though. Give me those heady point guards with a little attitude, smarts & energy to recruit 24/7. Archie Miller fits that mold, but doubt he would move to NY area. Your descriptors of the coach we need is spot on.

I think that's fair. Let's see how he does.
my contention for the last year has just been that he should be under consideration, that's all.

What is Mark Jackson up to? Got the name. Got the pedigree. Been a coach. NBA.........

Since 2003, here is a list of the NCAA Tournament stats for all of the Current Big East Teams.

We are last with one game played (one less than Depaul).

Butler: 23 games, 7 appearances, 16-7 record
Nova: 22 games, 9 appearances, 13-9 record
Xavier: 22 games, 9 appearances, 13-9 record
Marquette: 22 games, 9 appearances, 13-9 record
GTown: 15 Games, 7 appearances, 8-7 record
Creighton: 8 games, 5 appearances, 3-5 record
Seton Hall: 3 games, 2 appearances, 1-2 record
Providence: 2 games, 2 appearances, 0-2 record
Depaul: 2 games, 1 appearance, 1-1 record
St John's: 1 game, 1 appearance, 0-1 record

That is all you need to know where we sit right now in the land scape of the Big East and college Basketball.

We are a total laughing stock. The culture needs ot be changed because what top recruits would wanna come play for this? Its a total embarrassment.

Complete ineptitude, from the athletics dept to the head coaches....

I knew and posted that this talk would begin the moment IB committed elsewhere and we didn't disappoint. I love NYC guys who are spunky, take no garbage, and win. Both Hurley and Cluess are dumb enough to believe they can win here, and smart enough and good enough coaches to actually do it.

Lesson in life number 1 and 2:

1) Money guys almost always call the shots.
2) Even when they aren't calling the shots directly, they are still calling the shots.

I love this thread, it's like getting together with family over Thanksgiving and mentally guessing/wagering who might say what. I for one want to enjoy watching D-Lo and company will themselves into the tournament and give themselves an afternoon in the sun before their eligibility to play expires. That's more important to me than new coach discussions, although I often find these threads highly amusing and love when the mods and old school posters poke fun at it.

Matt Abdelmassih
Danny Hurley
Seth Greenberg

How about both Danny and Matt? No control over who a new HC would bring in if there is a regime change obviously, but any new coach would be largely outside of their mind to not consider Matt in a promotion role over his current gig at ISU. Appears the guy has been recruiting the stuffing out of the northeast.
