Tournament or New Coach

I would not be happy with Crean, and would be okay with Howland. Crean has absolutely lost control of that program at IU and has been pushed to be ousted by IU fans for over a year now. He has underachieved with the players he has had. Kinda reminds me of Lavin, with a little more energy and anger. Howland also had a similar situation. He came in to UCLA and did well early on. Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook didn't hurt, but kudos to him for getting them there. But after 2008, it started to go downhill. I think he lost like 11 guys from the program in a 3 year period (correct me if that's a little off). He "lost control" of the team, according to many UCLA fans and reporters. But then again, he took that team to three straight final fours. So it would be an upgrade, but still a risk. At this point, I think a NYC guy with knowledge of the program and area would be best for us.

Ben Howland is far and away the best option. I would overlook the "another ex-UCLA coach" angle. He's nothing like Lav, and he's been here (BE) and done that (rebuild and win big).

If that's the route you take, you need to fire Lavin now, because Howland would win big with the current kids. I'm not sure it's a long-term route I want, though.

In my opinion Lavin has done nothing to warrant a contract extension, let alone negotiating for more money! At 2 mill per year he is grossly over paid! There are coaches out there making far less money with far better results. I would consider a possible 2 year extension, with either no increase, or restructure his comp so that is salary is less with built in incentives! I would also unload these high priced assistants who in my opinion have been worthless!

I find the suggestion to fire a high paid assistant interesting because if Lavin had done that last March and hired Morton Whitehead would be at CA tonight. In

Can we please hire a coach this time around that was not fired from his previous coaching job? It really shouldn't be that hard to do. I could care less about name recognition. While he was a coach on the rise, FF was not exactly a household name when he took over here. Yet he was probably the best recruiting coach we ever had. And he didn't need to fly to Bosnia or Italy, or even California to find talent.

Not saying he should have hired Morton, not for one minute, but these highly paid assistants have not contributed in a positive way to the development of our players. I would have thought that Whitesell would have had more of an impact than he has! Than again who knows, maybe Lavin is not allowing that to happen.

I don't know if it was quite that cut and dry with Whitehead. He was looking at sharing the floor with DLO and Jordan. He is the Man at SH.

But that aside, I do wonder what Tony Chiles and Rico Hines are bringing to the party.

Ben Howland's biggest achievement was not in Westwood.

It was turning Pitt from an also-ran into a nationally relevant program.

Rico brings the wine, Chiles the desert?

If we can get him, we should be all over that Monte guy.

We've already got one Monte too many. B)

On a scale of 1 to 10 to gauge just how batshit crazy a Manhattan coach is, where does Mas rank?

For reference: Gonzo=10, Fran=8, Lappas=3, Mahoney=1

My 3 would be
Greg Popovich
phil jackson
Rick pitino

A lot a dilusional people on here about the appeal of sju job.

This is a dumbest Nov.threaad to date. Can we revisit this topic in march. Let the seaon play out. I have never seen such a reaction to a snot nosed 18 year olds decision. there are other fish in the sea. I want kids that want to be here. Quite frankly lavin is back for next year no matter what happens. They are not eating his contract or doing a buyout. One good thing is new pres. KNOWS THE IMPORTANCE OF A SUCCESSFUL BASKETBALL PROGRAM. And lavin knows that he must step up his game to remain beyond 15-16 season

Does Lavin have two years left, or just one? If there is two years remaining there could be a modest buyout on the university's part. I do know for a fact there are some organized rumblings.

My least favorite phrase to read on this board is "Just let it play out" . I have been reading this for well over a year. I would suggest that we have now let it play out. We have let it ALL play out (recruiting, unsettled line-ups, anemic offenses, maturation of freshmen, ineligibilities, etc., etc., etc.).

I enjoyed last night's game, but call me when our guys are looking at a Big East caliber zone defense.

Marillac
Doc Butler
Medium t shirt

I'm not sure we can do better with the current state of the program than Doc B.

In order of preference:

1. Gregg Marshall
2. Shaka Smart
3. Archie Miller
4. Richard Pitino
5. Bobby/Danny Hurley
7. Tom Crean
8. Orlando Antigua
9. Massileo

Gregg Marshall would be a dream get but he'll be coach of Indiana next year. Not sure whats going on in the head of Smart. If he is smart he wont spend his entire career at an A-10 school where he will never win a title.
Massileo is tainted. Tom Crean is a better recruiter than a coach but he is still an improvement over Lavin in that area. The Hurley brothers would recruit well locally. They will separate themselves this season and we will know which brother is the actual better coach.
Antigua would need to show that he is a good X & Os guy, merely having been a good recruiter as an assistant is not good enough, especially with STJs recent past and present coaches.
Pitino has only been at Minn for 2 seasons. I don't think he bolts that early for anything less than a Big 7 program.

Archie Miller looks like the best choice. A very good X & Os coach who could win championships with a major program. He wont move while he believes he has a shot at the Indiana job. But when Marshall gets the nod, he will be open to bolt from Dayton and is a guy St. Johns has a serious chance of landing.
