Tournament or New Coach

Um shouldn't Danny Hurley try getting to .500 at URI before we start wanting him as coach?

I agree, this is a big year for Hurley. Losing Jordan Hare hurts, but he still has a number of guys (that he recruited) back. We should have a better read on him after this year.

Anyone know what NYC HS coaches think of him? I know Dad is well respected by the casual fan, but I have no idea what other coaches think of him?.

Rather have Bobby. Only HC for one year but arguably the greatest modern day college bball PG. Fans know the name so some ticket selling appeal. Mellower than his brother.

He definitely handles pressure better than Danny, who internalizes everything to the point where he may give himself a heart attack.

The problem with Bobby would be if he did great here, would he jump to Duke? Age-wise, Coach K must be in the final stretch of his career there.

They should've hired Mark Jackson as soon as he was fired from Golden State.

Bring him in on a 2-year deal and let it be publicly known that he'd be looking to return to the NBA after his deal was up.

Then fill his staff with an assistant head coach in training like Antigua or Abbdelmassih who would handle the recruiting but take over when Jackson leaves.

It would immediately restore local credibility because none of these scumbag NY HS coaches and handlers would be able to push Jackson around because he already knows the landscape.

Every recruit would know that Jackson would be returning to the league so that would give them incentive to give us a serious look.

And we'd have proven local recruiters ready to take over when Jackson is ready to leave.

Too late for that as I don't think Jackson would sit out what would be 3 years at this point.

But that would've been the quickest and easiest transition that I could think of.

Good to see you posting again.

Too bad Jax pretty much despises SJU

You too.

OT: I didn't know of the friction between Jackson and the school.

Either way, it's imperative IMO that they bring in someone with local ties.

We have zero NY/NJ representation on our bench. We don't even have former players.

Can someone really say that Darrick Martin has more impact than a Jimmy Salmon or a Munch would? Rasheen Davis?

You need someone on staff who is plugged in locally. We don't have that. And with all of our Cali representation, all we've been able to muster is a kid who had a better curveball than a jumpshot.

Just my opinion but I don't see Duke hiring from the family unless someone absolutely lights it up i.e. Wojo, Hurley, Dawkins, etc.

I could see Shaka at either Tobacco Rd school.

Losing Kimani was really dumb move.

Really? I am too young to remember him but I have never heard that before. Is he even the greatest modern day duke pg?

Yeah, you wouldn't know it by looking at him, and he probably wouldn't have had a super NBA career even if never injured, but he was a great, great, great, great PG. Truly an on-court extension of the way his dad views the floor from the sidelines.

Not disputing that he was a great college point guard, bolstered by some great teammates, but the greatest in modern college bb history? I've got to think about that one. But I might have to start a new thread for this debate. This is way off topic ;)

Thats why I said arguably. It's impossible to pick just 1 greatest of anything really nowadays. Since the 3 pt era I would put him in the top 5 for sure of college PG's. No?

Again I cant speak on hurley, but what about a guy like Kemba. I mean that guy went on one of the best runs in the history of runs.

Agreed. Isiah and Magic have to be right up there.

Kemba had one of the greatest runs ever, but I wouldn't call his overall body of work "great"

Please go to you tube and check out Kenny Anderson / Bobby Hurley. They were peers in college and Kenny abused Bobby !!!!!!!!

IMO Kenny never got the recognition he deserved as one of the great college point guards, along with being right up there with Pearl as one of the greatest NYC point guards of all time.

Jay Williams was very very good as a college pg. Like Hurley he's a dukie, so people will always hold that against them, but in my opinion they are 1 and 2 among "modern" college pgs.

Jameer Nelson also belongs in the conversation.

JayWill was one of the most dynamic college point guards that I've even seen. Hurley was probably a better pure point guard, where as JayWill was more of a combo guard, but I have no doubt that if they went head to head Jaywill would eat Hurley up alive. Agree on Nelson also. Great guard on very good team.

I would put Mike Bibby somewhere in the top 10.

He was amazing in Arizona's 1997 National Championship run. A thin body of work, as he only played two years before going to the NBA. His #10 is retired by the University of Arizona.

Uh magic, isaiah, cousy, maravich, phil ford, calvin murphy, gary payton, iverson, chris paul. I'll give you top ten for Hurley but best ever? Cmon. He played in a great system and was smart, had great vision and was disciplined and well coached. But he had the body of Archidiacano and lacked the speed, quickness, strength, and elevation to be the best.
