Tournament or New Coach

Prove it.
. Otis I thought you were a smart fella. 300+ d 1 teams each with a bakers dozen on their respective teams. Do the math on how many kids that equals. That is a few thousand kids. All of our starters were either just outside the top 50 or under. That's pretty impressive. Especially considering. We don't have sham classes, people taking SAT's, giving away kids aunts or uncle's beauty salons, dry cleaners. So yeah I just proved he can recruit! Otis you must of been a Barry Bonds fan during the steroid era!

Tom,
If you believe that top to bottom StJohn's has a talented roster then there is not much I can say to change your mind. If you favor having St.John's play with a short roster (3 less scholarship players that allied by NCAA) and with unbalanced class rosters then we differ.

The bottom line is that StJoihn's will have at least six openings on its roster next season and as of this late date in the recruiting cycle, November 20, 2014, "Lav" who you believe can recruit well has just one 3*. I sincerely hope that "Lav" finishes with a great recruiting class but that will be surprising given that there are few top high schoolers remaining.

Perhaps if Mr.Briscoe had known who his teammates would be next season he would have committed to StJohn.

Capisce?

Otis now you change the subject. I said Lavin could recruit, and I proved it, now you want to say we don't have enough players, Kansas has 7 schollie kids suited up against Kentucky. Kansas is an elite program. Our first 6 are all top 50 or close to that...I give Lavin credit for being on Briscoe before he blew up. He was in his head before he became the best H.S. PG in the country..Kentucky didn't get on to him until August after the kid blew up. Shows me Lavin has an eye for talent. Now Lavin may not have the creative donors Kentucky does or creative financing to work with. I cant blame a kid for going where the fringe benefits are.
Now you are saying Xavier gets things done with the same level of kids as we have. Now you are talking about coaching ability. Unfortunately that is a different subject. I never said Lavin was a great game coach.

What I am saying is its pretty damn hard to recruit a kid, when you have no contract. I am sure that was much more important to him than who he was going to play with. That is not on Lavin that he does not have an extension. Any other school outside the premier schools will crush on that fact recruiting against Lavin. They will say I love Lavin and I am glad you like him to, but unfortunately it doesn't look like Lavin will be back, and then the kid comes here and reads all these posts saying Lavin is leaving, where would you be going?

You never answered about your love for Barry Bonds ???

Lavin has no one but himself to blame for not having an extension. Also, claiming that the lack of an extension for Lavin is the reason Briscoe chose Kentucky is like saying you bought a Mercedes over a Hyundai because the Hyundai didn't have rear cup-holders. BS[/quote]

Well a kid that comes out on National TV announces for Kentucky and states he will sign in the spring
and then signs the next day seems quite contradictory. I wonder what nice" things" changed his mind.
Furthermore the BS that Calipari stated that their was no begging is the real BS. This guy had Slice at nearly every practice and twice on Sundays including numerous trips himself. No begging at all.

I would like to offer my sincerest apologies to Coach Lavin. I should have trusted him all along. For awhile I have been upset about our thin front court because I was under the impression that rebounding was important (silly me).

If you are like me, please read the following article in which Coach Lavin explains that we will be fine because rebounding is overrated:

I guess Dom and the guards don't even buy Lavin's BS becauses they are talking about having to rebound. Only the self named Slurpers on this board still believe Lavin's BS!

Who is a realistic candidate to coach this team after Lavin?

As mentioned we have another problem It's hard for Lavin to recruit kids ,when they don't know if he will be around. That said,Lavin has not earned an extension.IMO.Re; the Huffungton post article I wish the author was prophetic and we flamed out in the sweet 16.

because he can recruit, and does a really good job.....

So if I'm understanding you correctly, what you're saying is that because our coach and program are morally and ethically above reproach, and because we have no sham classes and no issues with kid's transcripts or SAT scores, and because we only target kids that are solid students and citizens, that we're at a big disadvantage when it comes to recruiting against other high D1 schools?

I'm wondering if anyone here has first or second hand knowledge as to what Lavin's relationship is with local area HS coaches. I know for a fact that someone such as Jay Wright maintains close area ties and returns here to participate in golf tournaments and other events with local HS coaches. His relationship with them - both current and former coaches - is sincere friendship - and is one reason very few coaches hesitate to send kids there. At University events, Wright is a pied piper, attracting hordes of students and fans, and he is patient and warm engaging each, posing for photos, signing autographs or just chatting. Sorry to bring up Wright here, but does Lavin make the effort to forge legitimate relationships with HS programs here, and how present is he around SJU and at events?

I don't know Jay Wright from a whole in the wall, but he comes across as extremely sincere. He also hails from Penn so I'm assuming he had some roots in the community before arriving at Nova. I'll also assume that one of his first jobs upon arriving was outreach-to local coaches, fans, alumni, the community in general. I can't say that I've seen any of that from Lavin, or whether or not he has forged any legitimate relationships with any of the HS programs here. Someone on here mentioned Our Savior, but I think that was based on the package deal of CO and Balamou.

When Looie was here, there were plenty of fans and writers too complaining that SJU would be so much better if they had a coach that recruit from more than just Long Island and the 5 boroughs. Here comes Lavin, and recruits from all over the country and Europe as well. When things start to go south, many people suddenly want the old model back. Some posters would have made perfect extras in the Ten Commandments scene where Edward G. Robinson convinces the Hebrews to head back to the Pharoah instead of following Moses. We all loved what Lavin was doing in year 1. Then he scores 2 big recruiting coups in year 2 and 3 with Obekpa and Jordan. He takes 2014 off, and loses his big gamble with Briscoe to a guy even slicker than him with a lot more to offer when comparing programs. So the problem isn't Lavin's model, it's his recent execution of it. I want a coach with nationwide connections that recruits nationally. I don't want to go back to being a local player, especially considering that NYC HS hoops had a lot more talent back in Looie's day.

I don't know if Lavin got lazy, or lost his touch. I do know he knows how to close the deal. My guess is that he is in shock over losing Briscoe, as he was the guy signing recruits like Obekpa and Jordan that seemed locked up by other programs. I know this: Lavin's players, with the exception of year one with Dunlap, play with a certain lack of discipline and seem to lose focus and fall shot on effort way too often. So whether Lavin gets extended or not, I want the Lavin model to stay with this program. If I had a vote, I would say see if Mark Jackson has any interest.

Excellent post. I will still pull for Lav to get it done this year, but if it doesn't happen, I'm liking the idea of Archie Miller more and more if he'd be willing to come here. I like the way his teams play and I'd like to see how he would recruit here using Lav's success as a basis. Could be a great match.

I remember reading the following article when Lavin was hired and thinking it was sour grapes. In retrospect, its quite prophetic.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ari-shapiro/dear-st-johns-enjoy-steve_b_521280.html

I remember reading this article and thinking it was completely spot on based on things I'd heard from friends who were not UCLA fans, but who were close to the program while Lavin was there. Of course I was in the minority here.

The catch was nobody here would have cared if he acted the same way AND produced those same results as he did at UCLA. But he hasn't as we know.

Archie Miller will never be St. John's coach, so let's stop pretending

Oh, okay. Why is that? Dayton is the destination job?

No but they have a fan base that sticks with them, and even travels well. Only game in town they are covered like the knicks and he has it going there why take a rebuilding job that has been a grave yard for coaches when if he continues his success at UD he may get a plum job in a top 5 football conference for really big bucks.

Fan support is great at Dayton for sure. I believe Archie with another successful year or two at Dayton, will get a solid job for sure. With success and his brother's connections, I suspect it will be a better job than SJU's.
