Tournament or New Coach

I'm wondering if anyone here has first or second hand knowledge as to what Lavin's relationship is with local area HS coaches.quote]

He's in pretty tight with the coach from CTK

I hear the old coach from CTK was in pretty tight with some of his players

I don't buy the break up of the old big east...I am in NC and can now watch way more STJ games than I could before the FOX deal..There is way more exposure nationally now. You can now purchase STJ gear on Tobacco road, where you couldn't do that for a decade. The bottom line is that we don't have the resources to match wits with the big dogs, whether its no show classes like UNC, or Duke, or Uncles and relatives getting nice gigs at your #1 ranked recruiting school year in and year out. We got busted for Abe Keita getting 300 a month...We are playing YMCA recruiting and the big dogs are playing NBA recruiting.UNC has the largest scandal in NCAA history and Westchester CC loses its basketball program..see how it works...Syracuse has all sorts of scandals of the week, and they don't get a single punishment. We can sit her and blame the coach or the AD for our shortcomings all we want but face the truth, the NCAA does not consider us a power program as we don't have football, so we are the butt of their jokes.. We also don't have creative donors that will do the shady stuff that happens at other programs..which I do not condone...somebody at STJ pays Abe Keita 300 bucks and we get the ax, and some Asian kid take the SAT for Rose...do you see the imbalance ?

I think he's gone either way. Perhaps a retreat to Bristol.

So you think he was lying in that article about wanting to stay both in new York and at St johns? I think a successful year and decent recruiting class has him staying imo

People buy from great salespeople. If you have a great product, or a great personal track record, it makes it easier. Lavin is a good salesperson. He came here with a good track record for recruiting high level talent and getting them to the pros, but then again, for a more storied program. Roberts came here with the track record of a recruiter, but not as a coach. For both, over time, recruiting has become more difficult as they failed to win big enough. I hate comparing the two because NR was so bad as a coach that he will likely never be a D1 coach again. Lavin got us back to respectability (.500) but little more.

Puffery/coach speak, not lying imho. Just one man's views though.

so what exactly are we selling an inner city kid? a trip to the pro's? sure so is Kentucky, UNC, Duke, Kansas, Mich State, UConn, and dozens of other schools with kids in the pro's...We got busted paying a kid a long time ago $300 a month. Do you think these kids get less than that? If you don't think other programs figured loop holes to beat the NCAA you are kidding yourself.. Why did Whitehead end up at Seton Hall? Why did John Wall end up at Kentucky? why did Anthony Davis end up at Kentucky. How about Randle at Duke? to win championships right?? well watch Julius Randle last game at Duke 1st round of NCAA last year, and tell me he didn't pack it in well before then and was counting his dollars..Pj Hairston last year gets busted driving a mac daddy car that was owned by a drug dealer/agent wanna be...how many games did the ncaa punish them for that?? they self reported after he was arrested..no punishment for UNC

Speaking of which:
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- An internship program that placed Syracuse University athletes at a YMCA is part of an inquiry into possible NCAA violations by the school's athletic department, according to a newspaper report.

A report says an internship program that placed Syracuse athletes at a YMCA is part of an inquiry into possible NCAA violations by the school's athletic department.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that NCAA investigators asked about a former YMCA employee in nearby Oneida who had exceptional access to Syracuse men's basketball players and was sued for allegedly misappropriating close to $350,000 from the Y.

you cant blame this on Lavin, they are all corrupt..didn't coach K pick bug eyes as his assistant for team USA..?? The rest of the big schools are playing with a loaded gun, and we are playing with a swiss knife...Hard to beat a gun with a pocket knife.. and don't even let me get started with the sneaker company criminals..

Remember coach K cancer and how Duke was down in the dumps..Well Maggette and Elton saved the program with William Avery...All the big boys cheat somehow...but the trick is to keep yourself insulated from it...

The real problem is we all love our sports writers, whether its Zags, or Zach or Evans, etc...none of those guys ever did a minute of investigative sports journalism..Its called lazy reporters who would rather retweet then investigate..They do not want to rock the boat..But there is a huge story nationwide about the out of control benefits college basketball players receive to go to schools..

The NCAA doesn't want the cat out of the bag, Reporters don't want to ruin relationships with coaches..But there is a huge story..forget that Kentucky has personal chefs, that is nothing or luxury dorms....how much cash are relatives getting? what kind of cash businesses do they suddenly open when the kid commits...ask Zach, or Zags, or one of these guys if they have ever spent a minute investigating a real story, instead of retweeting or reading these boards+

True. Obviously he isn't going to say to the Daily News "nah I don't want to be here". Sometimes though I get the impression he doesn't even want to be a coach. I don't even know why I think that. Just some interviews and how he carries himself sometime. Bottom line is we'll know a lot more in 4 odd months.

because he can recruit, and does a really good job...we were in the final two for Briscoe, he opted for the fiscally friendly Kentucky over us...but we were in the final two...he is not playing on the same level playing field with the big guys

So we should keep him because he's good at coming in second for big recruits, right...

Considering we're a 3rd rate program, coming in scond is a pretty big feat.

I think you are talking about Parker from Duke; Randle played for Kentucky and had a real good tournament. Regardless, you make some good points. To that end, several people here know that I know some people in basketball circles in NJ. Not saying I am unbelievably connected but I know some familiar names to basketball fans for a pretty long time. Anyway, at a BS session in a bar in Jersey City about two months ago, the topic was that the "BIG TIME" schools were now enticing players with off-shore bank accounts because of the fears that Congress may eventually launch hearings/investigations on college sports. Using BS jobs, such as Syracuse, Penn State, Duke and others have doen for years are too open to easy scrutiny, especially with modern technology and social media. It was bar talk but deadly serious and does not seem far-fetched to me at all.

Once Kentucky got involved Lavin had no chance as he has little chance of closing with any highly rated players not in our back yard. He has not put together teams with a winning mentality and good players want to play with winners. Last year was supposed to be The year and they folded like a cheap tent. This year he is winging in again with oldest first 6 in the conference as opposed to the youngest team in America. The excuses have run their course. Without quality players and at least one NAME player you cannot make it in NYC. Too many other options.
Unless he lands Samson and Dilialah and goes the the NCAA I afraid the Lavinwood era may come to a close as disappointing as Norm's and Mike's. I am hoping most of us old timers are wrong but many saw coming last year after that great trip to Europe.

Can we just enjoy the season, fellas? This is exhausting. We are about to move to 3-0, and we have some seniors that took a chance on SJU, stuck with SJU, and deserve our support.

We are all upset about losing Briscoe--the kid is insanely good--but SJU hasn't landed a recruit like that in over a decade and only a handful over the last two decades.

Every thread turns into a fire Lavin discussion. There might be a few rough patches early as the team learns to play small for the first time, but the potential is there.
