Tournament or New Coach

Archie Miller, the Hurleys, and Mark Jackson are not coming to SJU. I would hope that whoever makes the call to replace Lavin (if/when he is replaced) would also commission an independent non-SJU committee to do the hiring or at the very least the recommending. To paraphrase Ben Stiller in Meet The Parents "SJU sucks at hiring basketball coaches."

There is no way SJU would entrust the decision to an independent committee. The best they can do is enlist some very knowledgeable retired coach(es) or AD(s) to guide them through the process. I wouldn't trust anyone who just had experience in the pros. If when this happens, it will be SJU spending the money, so they will make the decision, hopefully with guidance.

Somebody will have to buyout the last year of Lavin's contract. I think the very top echelon of donors will be asked to do that if they desire change. That's what happens at most programs.

My bet is that our donors will not do any such thing as buy out the last year of Lavin's contract, unless there is a reasonable buyout (500K or less). Our big donors I'm afraid will not eat a whole year of Lavin salary for nothing in return - if it came to that they'd simply wait and see what the final year turns out.

That would be my understanding as well.

unless the donors knew a certain coach was attainable and it made sense for them to buck up or new or old donors who have distanced themselves brought new $ back into the picture

So you think A. Lavin or B. the school will allow him to coach the final year of his contract with no further years?

I don't see anyway that happens. Would love to know if it has happened before.

Just because it is his final contract year doesn't mean that the school wouldn't extend him if he has a successful campaign. However, I think if the school decides at the end of this season that he will not be extended, there will be negotiations to buy him out at less than a full year's salary. If he refuses to take a buyout he will coach that year and then get fired. I don't see it coming to that though.

The school won't extend him. He would have to have a tremendous year AND a great class coming in. I hope we have a great year but I don't see the recruiting coming to fruition. Lavin isn't an idiot. If they say here is 75% of your salary take a hike he will take a hike. There is no way he wants to coach on 1 year and no way the school wants a dead man walking.

Orlando Antigua. Watch how well he does at USF this year. Bring him here, and his brother in as an assistant and I guarantee we won't have a problem getting metro - area recruits each year.
A solid 8-19 plus he has the balls to be wearing a suit with no tie on ESPNU!!! Cross him off the potential coaching list stat!

Lavin is a fashion trendsetter!

Lavin is something like 83-61 here. We have certainly had some bad luck with recruits along the way but I don't see any firing a guy with that record on brink of tourney. It also seems our recruiting is picking up and we might not be as bad as some think next year. I don't see obekpa not Jordan going pro after this season. They're simply not near ready.

People should root for the tournament and for lavin to land some more good recruits. IMO some stability here is probably better than anything right now. In addition, these players have improved a lot overall as a group. It had taken four years but some genuine improvement. Tourney...

Orlando Antigua!!!! ??? NJIT ??? Come on guys, the team has 18 wins with 4 games left before the BE tourney. We ARE going to the dance. Stop killing Lav already or least wait until the season is over! Its ridiculous that we are in a push for the NCAAs and all "some" of you do is talk about a different coach. Like some miracle worker will come in and make us undefeated. Be realistic, wait until the season is at least over before casting judgement! Geesh!!!

If we make the Tourney, Lavin will be extended, there's no doubt in my mind. Even if we're eliminated in the first round. And while I'm hardly a Lavin fan, I wouldn't dispute that call. But if we don't make it this year, he does not deserve to stick around.

Terrible,2 and 13 in the league, Stan Heath was better, welcome to the big time. Norm Roberts all over again.

Don't know what recruiting they have coming in but USF is absolutely brutal. I think they have a worse record than last year

COACH GETS EXTENDED NO MATTER WHAT
If that's true why wouldn't they have already done it to bolster recruiting?

Because Lavin's agent may be in denial, because our AD has not won the trust of the trustees and the new president and because there is no real rush when he knows he needs to secure a stellar recruiting class to secure his future. Never give a laid back Californian his treat before he does his trick on the recruiting trail or we may end up with 3 transfers, a Belgian who is waffling and 2 walk-ons from California. ;)

COACH GETS EXTENDED NO MATTER WHAT

Even if no NCAA tournament? If they extend him for another NIT run, then that would confirm that they are ok to settle for mid major status. I won't care so much next year then.

Would I be happy? No, but SJU would be telling us that the NIT is good, so gotta roll with it I guess.
But then, why remain a die hard, if the school doesn't really give a shit.

Just be a fan and be ok with mid major status, if that's the route that they want to go.

Doubt that is the route they want to go. Now, some of our fans...
