Tournament or New Coach

Steve's SJU career Resume will be summed up as Mediocre Results(that's being generous) and one full of promise unfulfilled .

He did a nice job with Norm's players and got us to 1 NCAA.. Even his recruiting prowess has been disappointing, after year 1. And, how many of those guys are still around to graduate? DLO, Greene are about it.

1 GuY to the NBA, HARKLESS..

And, only to those who see only good in any SJU SEASON, And, back in 2010 I posted skepticism about Lavin for his lack of any in game adjustments during the Gonzaga loss in the NCAA'S AS TROUBLE BREWING. Frankly, Lavin is just not a good Coach in the facets of the game that contribute to winning.

At the bottom line he hasn't accomplished his stated Mission for our Program and that gets you fired or, more gently put, not renewed.. His on Court Results are acceptable to only those who want to compare him to Norm, or Jarvis or, Mahoney..

Brian, at least, was BE Coach of the Year,. Once.

For the record, Brian was Coach of the Year during the Big East's absolute nadir. Brian's teams were poorly coached -- success that one year was due more to David Cain's leadership on the floor than Brian's coaching on the sidelines -- and were regularly near the bottom of the conference in defense. Nice man, terrible head coach.

He also got Felipe, Z, Tyrone, McLeod amongst others to come here. Not to shabby.

He's available if you want him back as HC.

Does anyone think that Mark Jackson could be in play? The knock on him prior to Lavin's hiring was no coaching experience. That's done with. Salary wise, could he be making anywhere near the money at ESPN that he could here? That I do not know. The reasons behind his firing at GS may make it difficult for him to find another NBA job for awhile. I have no idea if he would have any interest in this job, but he loved SJU at one time, so why not give him a chance to show his love for the program and for NYC again? My guess is that he would be a great recruiter if he put in the effort.

Ray why do you assume that Mark Jackson has ever loved for our program?[/qut

He was highly recruited and chose us. He was part of the most successful team SJU had in the modern era. That's about all I got.

I don't think he's been seen or heard from in these parts in a very long time. But who knows,. maybe he gets all sentimental and feels a calling to help resurrect the basketball program at his alma mater.

Ray can you see a St. John"s with a coach who sent pix of himself in the all together over the internet?

Moose has noted about a dozen times the relationship between SJU & Jackson is not a good one.

Moose has also pulled Paultz to the dark side, where their forces multiply. There is little hope for the homers. The only chance Marillac sees is a division between the extremists like JohnnyFan/ Otis and the the new darksiders like Moose, Paultz, and MCNPA. There is always the chance the homers can get MJMaher drunk and convince him to destroy them from within.

That, or the team could win two games next week.
Funny! Btw, am pulling for those two victories.

FYI two new "dark siders" and I have MJM captive in a seedy Time Square Hotel with weekend supply of pale ale & porno. He seems like he is turning to our cult, as he stares at the flicks, sips his brew & smiles endlessly. We're one step ahead of you Marillac.

Pretty much a synopsis of what we've been saying on here for a while. Not good.

Not to kick dirt on him because he didn't choose us but perhaps had he come to St. John's and stayed long enough to get a degree he'd have learned how to speak English, or at least a reasonable facsimile:

“I love the city and my fan base, it’s pretty much where I’m from. I’m not downgrading any other team. I just had to do what’s best for me and my family.”

Also, "His fanbase"? Let him score a few points at D1 and play 30 minutes in a game before he thinks he has a fan base here. From my perspective, he has none right now, and even if he does well in Kentucky, he won't ever have a fanbase here unless he plays for a local team in the NBA.

As far as Lavin's recruiting, he has to put up, and I'm confident he's not done in terms of reeling in some q2uality for next season's team. I'd keep an eye on Kentucky's roster though. Like Florida State and quarterbacks, there may be more than a couple of defections when they are picking splinters out of their butts. (Both Clemson and Boston College's starting quarterbacks this year transferred from Florida State)

Archie Miller, the Hurleys, and Mark Jackson are not coming to SJU. I would hope that whoever makes the call to replace Lavin (if/when he is replaced) would also commission an independent non-SJU committee to do the hiring or at the very least the recommending. To paraphrase Ben Stiller in Meet The Parents "SJU sucks at hiring basketball coaches."

So far over the first 5 games of the year, there are 10 kids on the Kentucky team averaging between 16-22 minutes per. No one averages more than that. Cal has said he is going to rotate kids in and out all year. Granted its a small sample size against mostly weaker comp, but sounds to me like he's trying to figure out how to keep all his kids content with their PT.

There is no way SJU would entrust the decision to an independent committee. The best they can do is enlist some very knowledgeable retired coach(es) or AD(s) to guide them through the process. I wouldn't trust anyone who just had experience in the pros. If when this happens, it will be SJU spending the money, so they will make the decision, hopefully with guidance.

Why do you feel the Hurley are not/would not come?

I do not think they would feel it was a step up to anything; the old BE maybe, now, I believe Danny would think he already has a better job than SJU. IMO, it is only a matter of time before Danny winds up at a big time school.

I am saying what they should do, not what they will do. As for the money aspect, most really smart money people understand you get the most bang for your buck s by employing people who KNOW the particular issue involved.

Have you watched any UK games yet? He has two teams, he for the most part replaces all 5 guys at once every 4-5 minutes. It's weird but as you said he does it because he wants theym all to have PT and be happy, and of course he can, based on having a full top 10 starting squad on the bench. But that'll change if things get more difficult, though by the looks of their game against Kansas that may not happen. They do play 4 ranked teams, 3 top 10, in December, lets see how those go..

The other problem is that they play no one but Florida in the new year before the dance. The SEC is very weak again. One of the recurring debates about Kentucky is that they aren't tested sufficiently in their conference slate. This year will be no exception. If I was Cal I might try and move one of their marquee non conference games to February each year just to see how they stack up against the best once everyone starts playing their best ball. There is far more impetus for the Duke's, AZ's, Mi State's, even Kansases of the world to keep improving throughout the season than there is for Kentucky.

No doubt Kentucky has put the most talent on the floor every year or the Cal era. But recent history shows it takes more to win it all than talent. Then again it seems to be the common refrain from Kentucky that the program is no longer about winning it all, it's about winning the draft.

Somebody will have to buyout the last year of Lavin's contract. I think the very top echelon of donors will be asked to do that if they desire change. That's what happens at most programs.

My bet is that our donors will not do any such thing as buy out the last year of Lavin's contract, unless there is a reasonable buyout (500K or less). Our big donors I'm afraid will not eat a whole year of Lavin salary for nothing in return - if it came to that they'd simply wait and see what the final year turns out.

So you think A. Lavin or B. the school will allow him to coach the final year of his contract with no further years?

I don't see anyway that happens. Would love to know if it has happened before.
