Tournament or New Coach

When Looie was here, there were plenty of fans and writers too complaining that SJU would be so much better if they had a coach that recruit from more than just Long Island and the 5 boroughs. Here comes Lavin, and recruits from all over the country and Europe as well. When things start to go south, many people suddenly want the old model back. Some posters would have made perfect extras in the Ten Commandments scene where Edward G. Robinson convinces the Hebrews to head back to the Pharoah instead of following Moses. We all loved what Lavin was doing in year 1. Then he scores 2 big recruiting coups in year 2 and 3 with Obekpa and Jordan. He takes 2014 off, and loses his big gamble with Briscoe to a guy even slicker than him with a lot more to offer when comparing programs. So the problem isn't Lavin's model, it's his recent execution of it. I want a coach with nationwide connections that recruits nationally. I don't want to go back to being a local player, especially considering that NYC HS hoops had a lot more talent back in Looie's day.

I don't know if Lavin got lazy, or lost his touch. I do know he knows how to close the deal. My guess is that he is in shock over losing Briscoe, as he was the guy signing recruits like Obekpa and Jordan that seemed locked up by other programs. I know this: Lavin's players, with the exception of year one with Dunlap, play with a certain lack of discipline and seem to lose focus and fall shot on effort way too often. So whether Lavin gets extended or not, I want the Lavin model to stay with this program. If I had a vote, I would say see if Mark Jackson has any interest.

Excellent post. I will still pull for Lav to get it done this year, but if it doesn't happen, I'm liking the idea of Archie Miller more and more if he'd be willing to come here. I like the way his teams play and I'd like to see how he would recruit here using Lav's success as a basis. Could be a great match.

Archie Miller will never be St. John's coach, so let's stop pretending

If he doesnt get the Indiana job, he would pull the trigger for STJ if the offer was right. He is a very realistic target for this program. Indiana is the only Big-7 job that will be open within the next few yrs and none of the next tier of programs like Florida, Ohio St, Uconn... are available anytime soon.

If STJ wants him after this season, and doesnt try to low-ball him salary wise, I think they can get him.

Heck, if Archie doesn't want the job then offer it to his Dad John Miller who obviously taught his sons Archie and Sean pretty well.

Does anyone think that Mark Jackson could be in play? The knock on him prior to Lavin's hiring was no coaching experience. That's done with. Salary wise, could he be making anywhere near the money at ESPN that he could here? That I do not know. The reasons behind his firing at GS may make it difficult for him to find another NBA job for awhile. I have no idea if he would have any interest in this job, but he loved SJU at one time, so why not give him a chance to show his love for the program and for NYC again? My guess is that he would be a great recruiter if he put in the effort.

How many times does Majeurus have to turn us down before you guys get the clue? He doesn't want to coach St John's!

Ray why do you assume that Mark Jackson has ever loved for our program?

I bet he would love to now that he is no longer alive

He was highly recruited and chose us. He was part of the most successful team SJU had in the modern era. That's about all I got.

Majerus come on please. Mark Jackson do you think he wants to sit in kids living rooms and beg their parents and the kids to please let their kids come to STJ? If he said yes, we should hire him. But I doubt he wants to do that. He has a really good job now, and wants another crack at the N.B.A. Plus his family is now in California and who knows if he wants to move them across the country.

I am not sure he would consider the SJU job to be a better situation.

Steve's SJU career Resume will be summed up as Mediocre Results(that's being generous) and one full of promise unfulfilled .

He did a nice job with Norm's players and got us to 1 NCAA.. Even his recruiting prowess has been disappointing, after year 1. And, how many of those guys are still around to graduate? DLO, Greene are about it.

1 GuY to the NBA, HARKLESS..

And, only to those who see only good in any SJU SEASON, And, back in 2010 I posted skepticism about Lavin for his lack of any in game adjustments during the Gonzaga loss in the NCAA'S AS TROUBLE BREWING. Frankly, Lavin is just not a good Coach in the facets of the game that contribute to winning.

At the bottom line he hasn't accomplished his stated Mission for our Program and that gets you fired or, more gently put, not renewed.. His on Court Results are acceptable to only those who want to compare him to Norm, or Jarvis or, Mahoney..

Brian, at least, was BE Coach of the Year,. Once.

For the record, Brian was Coach of the Year during the Big East's absolute nadir. Brian's teams were poorly coached -- success that one year was due more to David Cain's leadership on the floor than Brian's coaching on the sidelines -- and were regularly near the bottom of the conference in defense. Nice man, terrible head coach.

Instead of sitting in kids' living rooms with their parents convincing them that St. John's is the place to be, he'd probably have the whole family kneeling on the floor, holding hands with them, and praising the Lord (visions of Nixon with a stunned Kissinger), then head to nearest corner to preach to passers-by. No thanks.

Beat both Minn and Gonzaga and the contract extension discussions will begin in earnest- that is my guess. Beat Syracuse on top of that and it's a done deal, IMO.

Moose has noted about a dozen times the relationship between SJU & Jackson is not a good one.

Moose has also pulled Paultz to the dark side, where their forces multiply. There is little hope for the homers. The only chance Marillac sees is a division between the extremists like JohnnyFan/ Otis and the the new darksiders like Moose, Paultz, and MCNPA. There is always the chance the homers can get MJMaher drunk and convince him to destroy them from within.

That, or the team could win two games next week.

I don't think he's been seen or heard from in these parts in a very long time. But who knows,. maybe he gets all sentimental and feels a calling to help resurrect the basketball program at his alma mater.
