Time to Hire ...

Mitch Henderson would be an interesting dice roll.

Remember that other Princeton guy who was coaching Air Force to the NCAA tourney and a bunch of redmen.comers were salivating about him possibly replacing Jarvis?!?

Yeah, me neither.

I feel like I'm being setup for this one: Joe Scott. Although I'm not sure anyone actually salivated, a guy who knows basketball, was raised and played in NJ and preaches hard work and execution instead of fanning the flames of his own ego would break the post-LC mold.

I actually ran into him when I was at a volleyball tournament in San Jose last Feb. The Denver U team was staying at the same hotel for their game against San Jose State. I thought he looked familiar so asked his name after chatting with him and one of his assistants in the lobby. I said, oh yeah you used to be at Air Force and the fact that I knew that allowed him to open up. We discussed his interest in and possibility of St Johns at that time and he just smiled and acknowledged there was talk but not that serious. He hasn't had much success at Princeton and Denver after that one great season at Air Force. He got Denver to the NIT last year.

So you also follow women's beach volleyball! I try to catch all the Aussie women vs. the Brazialian women every chance I get! Have hours of tape! I am thinking of starting a blog advocating adding women's pole dancing to the next Opympis. You in?

I'm definitely in. But no, my daughter just ended her illustrious HS indoor volleyball career after 4 years of school and club participation. LOL

Some thoughts on some of the names that have been thrown out:

Larry Brown? Not coming, not what we need, and not someone the school would hire. However if you are enthralled with the idea of hiring a septugenarian, then I would go for Bobby Knight. Or perhaps you would prefer to exhume Joe Lapchick?

Bruce Pearl? You think a program that was appalled by Jarvis misdemeanors and petty offenses and then spent years self-flagellating itself with Norm Roberts is going to hire a full-fledged NCAA felon (note, this is just by way of comparison, I'm not saying Pearl is actually guilty of any actual crimes).

PJ Carlessimo? He won't be coming back to college. Ditto for Lawrence Frank, Mike Dunlap, and Jeff Van Gundy. Also Pat Riley and Phil Jackson if you had them on your list.

Tommy Amaker? He's done well at Harvard, but he's also proved to be the very definition of mediocre at his jobs in upper-level leagues.

Steve Masiello? Let's go down the list of Manhattan coaches: Fran Fraschilla, check. Bobby Gonzalez, check. Yeah, I don't think St John's will be hiring a Manhattan guy (note that I have left off a pair of mediocrities in Brian Mahoney and Steve Lappas (a poor man's Steve Lavin, good recruiter but one of the worst game coaches I've ever seen).

Now Danny Hurley is a rational option, other than that the Hurleys have historically not been close to St. John's.

Going back to my initial list, if you don't the style Cluess plays, that's reasonable. Though really any "style" that is coherent and looks like basketball would be an improvement on the past decade or so of St John's basketball. However, to quibble over whether he's "a St. John's guy" is just silly. If that's your standard then Brian Mahoney should still be coaching the team. Cluess has local ties, he's well respected, he has a St John's history, he can recruit (or has at the level he's at), and he can coach. He's also smart enough to build a staff.

Before the Lavin hire my dream hire was Knight with Cluess as designated heir.

I remember that too

You guys are insane! They will not dump Lavin. And even if they did what makes anyone think they will make the right decision next time? This school thinks small in regards to basketball and many other things. This is the same school that was shocked, shocked! When they found out Father Harrington was running a diploma mill for Chinese businessmen! Then let him retire to a life of luxury! What a joke!! That being said I was a huge supporter of Lavin's hire, but I have been very disappointed.

I'm not sure how/if the Vincentians disciplined Harrington, but he did take a vow of poverty, and if they take that seriously (since not all priests take this vow), then he would have no material assets. Does anyone here know where he is living? I believe he did own at least part of a home in Buzzard's Bay, but again that would be against his vows as far as I know.

USAFA coach - Jeff Bzdelik

Masiello's the perfect hire.

Young, connected, comes from a good coaching tree, local guy, has personality.

It's a shame that there are so much politics that will get in the way of hiring him and/or telling Lavin to step aside or be fired.

If Masiello was the coach, we would've had Whitehead and had him early. Lavin backed off the kid for perception (read: his Ego) of us not being able to land him and then still looked like a fool anyway.

Hurley is not leaving URI for this job. He turned down the Rutgers job last year and said that he doesn't want to change jobs so often. If Masiello is 1a, then Hurley is a clear 1b.

The rest are just reaches.

Cluess is a terrible hire. At the very least, we would actually use our athletes properly. But his lack of defense and lack of any structured offense would bite us eventually.

The only guy i can think of right now that would be a NO- BRAINER would be Chris Mullin. His kid plays Lax here and maybe he would stick around for his grad degree if pops was the coach. We know Mullie would be loyal, and is still loved in the NY circuit. Im still a believer in Lav, but if we would to lose him, Id love to see Mullie take over, and im sure Louie would too.

I dont want to here he has no coaching experience either. All American in college, Basketball Hall of Fame, Olympic Gold Winner, numerous All Stars. The guy knows basketball. He knows NY, and he knows St Johns!

I think if Mullen ever wanted to coach St. John's that would have been known a long time ago. Wishful thinking, I don't buy into Massiello either just because he was Pitino's assistant. So was Richard Pitino. For a shorter time and look what he's doing at Minnesota. I could be wrong, but the whole "gotta be a NY guy with local ties" isn't gonna work unless that guy is a can't miss. There is no certainty that Massiello could bring in top 30 recruits on a regular basis. The other coaches in the league have sent kids to the NBA. We'd be hiring a coach that doesn't have that experience and every other coach in the Big East would tell recruits that.

Mullin would be doing charity work by coaching St. John's. Charity work is a noble thing. I would love to see it.

What coach could we realistically get that has that experience you're looking for?

When was the last time Mullin recruited in a HS gym? Does he know any of the AAU coaches names? Because he played in the city 30yrs ago. Players have no idea who he is, and all the coaches have changed unfortunately.
It's an entirely different situation when you're hired to coach in the NBA without any experience (see Kidd and Jackson). Their basketball intellect is all they need to perform well. That, and the ability to handle those egos.

Not so simple in the college game. You have to have a recruiting plan, and be able to implement it.
If we're hiring a guy without head coaching experience it should be my man Orlando Antigua, the #2 guy at Kentucky who is known and well-liked in HS bball circles in NYC, and elsewhere too.

Isn't Mullin an exec with Sacramento? Just don't see him having an interest in the job, other than as part of a search committee. The ship sailed on Mark Jackson. Any other alum anyone wants to mention, as Tessio once said, "For old time's sake"? And you know what they did to him.

Isn't he Jewish?
