Time to Hire ...

Since I have done my share of complaining about Lavin, I thought I would throw out my list of attractive candidates (to me). They are in no special order, except P.J. is my top choice.

PJ Carliesimo (Unemployed)
Tommy Amaker (Harvard)
Mark Few (Gonzaga -Current Salary: $750,000)
Danny Hurley (Rhode Island)
Randy Bennett (St. Mary’s)
Steve Wojciechowski (Duke –Asst.)
Steve Prohm (Murray State)

Just wanted to put this list out there again to see how everyone feels about some of these potential candidates......

Too many pipe dreams on there. Only one real candidate in that list.

I watched a very well Coached SMU Team win yesterday and LARRY Brown looked pretty spry to me. We have Keady sitting on our bench at 77 or whatever. And, I kind of wish he brought back the combover and gave Lavin the clipboard and a seat.

So, if BROWN can Coach at 74 at a high level or, 84 does it matter? We need someone who actually knows how to coach players and not just give press conferences. SO WHAT IF HE ONLY GAVE US 3 YEARS . He would get this program back in the right direction, can we say that about Lavin in year 4? NO!

I know it's unlikely but, Brown is a HOF GUY. aND, FROM lONG beach. Have him mentor a guy like Antigua for 2-3 years as his Assistant. Orlando isn't getting the Kentucky job in this century.Brown is Jewish but, so what? HIS religion is basketball . Some of our best old time legend players were Jewish .. It doesn't matter.

Other than that, I'm not a Pearl fan because I think he cheats, at least he got caught and that means something. Greenberg is now in the land of former COACHES, turned Commentators, leave him there. Lavin will be back in the studio soon too. Maybe not soon enough to our liking but, he will be.

How about Chris COLLINS at N'Western, former Duke Assistant. They just beat Indiana in BLOOMINGTON, last night. Get him now before he really blows up...

Happy it is not an issue this time.

For some maybe.. For others it is.. Realistically, Lavin has a contract.. Whether that means he stays 2 more years, or at least 1, without a extension, is conjecture.

Coaches do resign however.. Usually with a negotiated settlement. We'll see..

Orlando Antigua. Tough NY guy and former player who has been learning under Jamie Dixon and now Calipari. Also an excellent recruiter. Someone's going to make him a HC very soon. Why not us?
He's Calipari's bag man. He hands paper bags of cash to recruits.

Perfect. Lets hire both of them.

The school is going to stay with Lavin and you can have a thousand threads on this and it wont change that fact. But I see a bright side to Lavin and that is he really really wants to win. He cant leave now because it would be a reflection on him and a confirmation of all the UCLA critique. He wants to eventually get us to the Final Four and I think he can. The question is will he.

Steve Lavin cannot and will not get any SJU team to a Final Four.

Unless his ego permits him to turn over all practices, playcalling and player development to a competent staff of assistant coaches and not a bunch of ex-UCLA buddies who have never accomplished anything, it will Never happen.

When he went to broadcasting at ESPN, the game passed him by. Evident by his hands off recruiting approach and archaic in-house rules (shaving, no social media for players, etc).

When I hear about coaches like Calipari and Crean who are at the top of the mountain sitting in high school gyms recruiting players, I wonder why Mr. Too Cool For School Lavin feels that he is too above doing the same but would rather hang out in SoHo as if he has accomplished something.

Players have regressed under his watch. When has he ever pointed the finger at himself?

We can't practice actual plays but Mary Lavin can give out yoga lessons to the players?

Sign me up for that.

Please don't ever mention Final Fours again because it just makes you sound as if you've bought into his garbage too.

Repole might need to win a race or 2 to buyout Lavin

Mike was at The PC game. Other celebrity sightings included former NYPD Commissioner Bob McGuire ( a St. John's Law grad) and Marcus Hatten (who is 33 years of age! Hard to believe !).

I seen this thread after the PJ thread and posted my candidates on that thread, so I`m gonna repost it on this one.
The two are assistants and i know everyone doesn`t want assistants, but just google them and read about them.

Question What`s the percentage that a assistant can come in and in his first coaching job bring a school to elite statis in his first 5-6yrs

I`m just going to throw out 2 names and see what people think

Greg Gard (wisc) Bo Ryan talks highly of him, and he can teach alot
Dwayne Stephens Mich St.) very good assistant and also a master recruiter.

Dont think they have a NY connection but just throwing these names out there and see what people on here say about them.

i like the programs they come from.....always love the way Bo Ryan and Tom Izzo teams play. That said, not sure i want to see us take the risk of hiring an unknow quantity at this point. We really can't afford to strike out again.

I think P.J. would have us in the tournament next year with the current group of players.

I think Amaker would be a very good choice as well.

Question I have is...

What prompted the hiring of Whitsell and what is his role?

Did Lavin acknowledge a gap and attempt to address? Was it just for show?

Lavin seems to have more discussions with Hines than anyone else on staff...

Every time I read this "Time to Hire" thread in January I want to vomit and am embarrassed for many of you. I was hoping this thread would die a quick death but I guess not!
As for Tommy Amaker, he pulled a Fran Fraschilla on the Hall and went back door to get the Michigan job. He did his Norm Roberts role at Michigan and then got his just reward in the end. The following will forever be in his Wiki profile - I love contributing to Wiki- so you Tommy Boy fans enjoy:

Amaker was credited for helping to restore the ethical reputation of a Michigan program which had been tarnished by scandal.[124][125] However, he was criticized in the press for being unable to take the Wolverines to the NCAA tournament in six seasons at the helm.[126] Some fans and sportswriters argued that Amaker's Michigan teams tended to underachieve and fall apart in pressure situations, particularly in conference, on the road and at the end of the regular season.[127] On March 17, 2007, Amaker was fired by the University of Michigan.[

Pearl is allowed to Coach after August of this year. He was the guy I wanted when we hired Lavin. Was told not good hire because he was a Jew by some here!
REALLY, who?

Four years ago , When I mentioned him under another name and few other posters mentioned Seth Greenberg. they were met with anti-semetic opinions. The school will never hire a Jew and few posters said they did not want them because of their religious beliefs. I responded saying that the school should give the Belsons back there money then. Those posters shut their mouths.

Both bruce Pearl and Seth Greenberg should be considered as potential candidates as they have won at the highest level. They are both considered good coaches and have recruited well.
I would hope their religion would not be a factor.
Larry Brown should not be considered not because of his religion but because he is just too old.

Bruce Pearl is a great hire for any program. Tubby Smith was a good hire for TT and 62 is not old IMO.

Wasn't Pearl fired for multiple ethical violations, including giving false and misleading statements to the NCAA, and multiple non-NCAA violations cited by the school before his firing? If we'd hire a Pearl, why not a Fraschilla?

Until recently i didnt know anything about this Masiello guy, but after a little research and looking at his team on youtube vids, im starting to warm up to the idea of him as Lavins replacement.

Although I have two reservations with this guy: 1) It is a HUGE step up from where he is and recruiting at the major conference level is a different ballgame. 2) If he does a very good job here he will be among the top candidates for the Kentucky job someday so he might only be here until Cal leaves UK.

He has recruited at major conference level as an assistant though.

Kentucky will hire the best coach they can find if and when that job is open. It won't matter if the person went to Kentucky or whatever. And honestly if he was our coach and Kentucky took him from us, then he must have done something pretty damn good here.

Thanks for posting the videos.

Norm Roberts also recruited at a high level as an assistant. Kentucky only hires heavyweights worth the $5 million they could offer. They are in a position to hire an NBA coach like Brad Stevens if they chose. He is coaching at Manhattan College, the stepping stone of guys with the names Mahoney, Fraschilla and Gonzalez. That alone is a red flag for me.
He wears great suits, he is very animated in the tradition of Bobby G and Franny and he was mentored by Slick Rick. Yet I am not impressed to date but I am curious as to why you are pushing so hard for this guy given his short track record.

His team just got beat by powerhouse Fairfield.

Without their best player who is injured. ;)

Beamon is awesome...he'd be our best player. I really like Mas and I am definitely intrigued at the possibility of getting him as our next coach, but what scares me is how reliant Manhattan is on Beamon. They won 21 games with a group of mostly freshmen and sophs, returned nearly everyone the next season while adding the MAAC Rookie of the year and another member of the All-MAAC Rookie team, but fell to an ugly 14-18 record when Beamon was lost for the year early.

This year will be very telling. Manhattan is loaded. They have SIX players that have earned all-conference honors, three are seniors and one is a junior. They had four preseason all-conference players selected, two to the first team. Beamon, a 6'4 SG/SF, getting injured this time around should not have as big of an effect when you consider that Manhattan has FOUR all-conference honorees between the PG, SG, and SF positions outside of Beamon (who makes 5).

I think anything less than a tournament bid will be a disappointing.

Is it asking too much to get someone of Jay Wright's caliber?
You do realize that Wright is one of the best coaches in college basketball.

Let's hear from Gonzalo on this one. :cheer:

It is evident that Villanova is playing very well this season.
And I have always said that Wright was an overrated coach. But I am not the only one:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...verrated-coaches-in-college-basketball/page/2

http://www.cbssports.com/collegebas...ho-is-the-most-overrated-coach-in-the-country

I have looked the preseason and postseason rankings since 2002-03 season. (Espn page). 11 seasons. Only in 2004-05 and 2008-09 seasons Villanova finished better than the preseason rankings. You can add this season.
