Time to Hire ...

This thread is hilarious! When even veteran Kool Aide drinkers join the chorous things are really bad. LOL!
If not one player is secured for next year and we lose a key player I think even Lavin may see the hopelessness of his future and likely would negotiate a buy out by May.
If, on the other hand, a couple of decent kids are signed and we lose no players, AND we win the NIT, then I think he is revitalized.
Let's be fair here. His recruits have let him down in dramatic fashion from day one. Perhaps a hard ass like Mike Dunlap would have made a difference but the on court poor play has been as much about these players as it has about the coaching. I am exited to see how they all respond.

Not sure why Shaka Smart turned down Illinois and UCLA, but maybe a school like STJ, not as far away on the other side of the country could have a better shot.
Although I will say that i am not as sold on Smart being a sure thing on this level. His style may not work to the same degree as in a lower level conference with lesser athletes.

Obviously, Danny Hurley and Masiello should be near the top of the list. Hiring a young hungry mid-major guy is risky, but it recently worked for Illinois. Another once big time program that had fallen on extended hard times. Now they are contenders again.

It is disgusting that the season has turned out so crappy that this thread was started in the first place.

By the way, for all of you who think I'm crazy for floating O Antigua... almost two years ago Kentucky fans were already floating the idea that he may replace Cal. And they were happy about that!

Think about that for a second. The fans of the winning-est program in basketball history are OK with the idea of this guy taking over the reigns to their program without any head coaching experience ... but you guys are telling me he's not good enough for SJU for the same reason?

You are one of my favorite posters, Desco, but this Antigua idea is awful. He might end up being amazing, but we can't take a risk like that. The term "career assistant" scares me more than anything after Norm. Norm's resume as an assistant coach is one of the most impressive I've ever seen and includes incredible success at three very different schools. Norm was a disaster. Antigua has no head coaching experience, and we can't replace a suspect x's and o's coach with someone that is unproven in that (and every other) aspect as a head coach.

My first choice would be Shaka Smart. He runs the kind of system that would make use of all these athletes right away. He'd press and he'd run, and there might not be a better group in the country for that type of game. It's criminal to have an apartment full of greyhounds without letting them run. That's what this team reminds me of in the half court.

Next would be Bruce Pearl followed by the two young guns: Masielo and Hurley. Mas is an attractive candidate, but he did inherit an unbelievable situation at Manhattan. I think Hurley will enjoy tremendous success and has a chip on his shoulder the size of the Grand Canyon.

Huh?
The team he inherited went 6-25 the year before he got there?

Forget his age, it's discriminatory. Larry Brown would leave SMU in a NY Minute for the St John's Job..
He's HOF and would have this team winning in 2 years.
Hell, he might be even be able to get this group of players to win.

you mean the guy who won 20 games with the Knicks. All time worst coaching job i've ever seen. Remember how he wanted Stevie Francis because he was sick of Marbury. How did that work out?

Haha thanks Marillac.
Listen, I know it's a little outside the box. All I'm saying is he's an interesting guy that brings a lot to the table and should get an interview.
When the Steelers hired Mike Tomlin he became the youngest coach in the NFL, and before that he had only been a coordinator for one season. That's pretty remarkable. But they saw something in him they liked. I think Antigua could be that kind've guy here.

But I digress.. I get what you're saying. And actually I think there have been some really good and plausible names mentioned. I like Pearl, Maisello, Hurley. That's a good group.
I agree with you Shaka would be the cream of the crop (and like you say, a great fit for our athletes), I just think if he wasn't interested in UCLA, Illinois, NC State etc... he;s not going to be blown away by St Johns.

Slice also left him with what was arguably the best recruiting class in Jaspers history. Mas inherited 4 returning first year starters, three of which are still there now, including all non-BCS, George Beamon. Mas won 21 with Beamon and then the team fell to 14-18 with nearly the same team when Beamon was lost for the year with injury. Kind of tells us all we need to know about how important Beamon is.

Slice wasn't exactly the best coach, and the year before his team was full of first year players and plagued with injury.

He inherited a 6 win team but leave it to you to put lipstick on that pig :)

Alvarado at point, Rahmel Brown (4 blocks a game) as a big man, and all-world George Beamon scoring the ball. Not exactly a pig ;)

Beamon improved 3 ppg under Masiello, the other two saw their numbers go down or stay flat. So again 6 wins to 21.
But carry on :)

Since I have done my share of complaining about Lavin, I thought I would throw out my list of attractive candidates (to me). They are in no special order, except P.J. is my top choice.

PJ Carliesimo (Unemployed)
Tommy Amaker (Harvard)
Mark Few (Gonzaga -Current Salary: $750,000)
Danny Hurley (Rhode Island)
Randy Bennett (St. Mary’s)
Steve Wojciechowski (Duke –Asst.)
Steve Prohm (Murray State)

Orlando Antigua. Tough NY guy and former player who has been learning under Jamie Dixon and now Calipari. Also an excellent recruiter. Someone's going to make him a HC very soon. Why not us?
He's Calipari's bag man. He hands paper bags of cash to recruits.

Time to hire ...... a management consultant to assist selection of a new coach.

There are companies that are routinely hired to manage the D1 coach hiring process.

Let me ask you: who do you have more confidence in, a consultant that has aided in the selection process many- many times before, or Monasch?
