Time to Hire ...

The way he handled Reeves Nelson tells me all I need to know about him.

Pass

So true. And don't forget the Tyrell Nolan incident either.

We do not need anymore failed UCLA coaches!

Come on really, coaches in NYC today dont know who Chris Mullin is? If they dont, they have no sense of NYC basketball history. How about the fact that he does games on TV also. Also, does Mullin know how to recruit? Really, isnt that what good assitants are for? Then you bring in Mullin to close the deal. Im sorry guys, look around the league, most of the coaches are former players. Yes, not every player can be a great coach, but Mullie brings so much to the table that it would be a no brainer to give him the job if in fact we do part with Lav ( who i still support ) and if Mullie would take the position. Two names that are thrown around that i do really like though are seth greenberg and PJ calisimo. doubt either would want the Johnnie job. Mullie has his kid here and family still around here and never count out Louie. Im just saying....btw, look back, I had Coach Lav pegged as next coach way before any decision was made. I also think its up to these players to play up to their potential, like i said before, Lav has made some mistakes, but these players are the ones that can right the ship.

I've heard Mullin called "Chris", and I've heard him called "Mo' (Carnesecca's name for him). I've never heard anyone call him Mullie.

For the record I am not advocating firing Lavin. Having been fired and having had to fire others, it should never be done lightly. I disliked Lavin's coaching at UCLA and suffer when he tries to play without a point guard but I am not now nor have I ever been a basketball professional. The last time I was really impressed with a St. John's coach was March of 1965 at Lapchick's last game.

I know it's fun for some of you guys to suggest coaches for next season, but the fact remains Lavin will be the coach next year.

I think there is no chance they fire him after the season, and even less chance he quits. If they stink again next season, all bets are off.

Maybe you should bet on it :)

I knew that was coming!

Judging by your track record we will have a new coach. See my thinking :)

I got it, I knew what you meant I havent won a bet in a while! Other than Fordham and GT I dont think STJ has covered the spread all season. And to your point if i'm saying Lavin will def be back next year, pretty much locks it up we will have a new coach.

Lawman's post of Howland's record is something to consider. How can anyone here dismiss a record like that. Success everywhere including Pitt in the Big East. I have a friend in LA who watches UCLA closely. He wasn't in favor of them firing Howland, but who can argue with what they're getting out of Alford now?
His take on Howland is that he's strong on strategy, game coaching, player development, focused on defense first and he takes no BS. Downside is that he's extremely rigid and lost any relationship he had with the local coaches. That's a red flag although it doesn't mean it would happen here. Also, kids were looking over their shoulders after mistakes. He's got a reputation as a hard ass and not very likable. My friend says he would need a good recruiter to work with.....like Lavin.

Is he a good fit? Who knows? Proven winner though and seemingly available.

Me comment had more to do with the fact that we keep taking their sloppy seconds, rather than Howland's record. Still, most UCLA fans wanted him gone. I think they felt he had reached the end of his usefulness. Also, are we all ready for a slow down, walk the ball up offense?

Ready for AN offense.

Replace one of the assistant coaches with this guy then.

Masiello's the perfect hire.

Young, connected, comes from a good coaching tree, local guy, has personality.

It's a shame that there are so much politics that will get in the way of hiring him and/or telling Lavin to step aside or be fired.

If Masiello was the coach, we would've had Whitehead and had him early. Lavin backed off the kid for perception (read: his Ego) of us not being able to land him and then still looked like a fool anyway.

Hurley is not leaving URI for this job. He turned down the Rutgers job last year and said that he doesn't want to change jobs so often. If Masiello is 1a, then Hurley is a clear 1b.

The rest are just reaches.

Cluess is a terrible hire. At the very least, we would actually use our athletes properly. But his lack of defense and lack of any structured offense would bite us eventually.

Wow.....Masiello has certainly become the anointed one. Given the small body of work, I am really surprised to see people be so sure (the bandwagon got big quick!). At this point, I am so frustrated with Lavin that I would take anyone. However, I would hate to suffer another mistake.

So, with that said, I am a strong advocate of P.J. Carlesimo.

100% correct.

UCLA fans have at one point or another wanted every coach gone since Wooden. Different mindset.

That said Howland seemed to be having difficult relating to, or bothering to relate to, his players in his later years at UCLA. Common refrain around town was he didn't know how to communicate to his players to get the most out of them. He still got a whole heck of a lot though. However talent he might attract to UCLA isn't necessarily talent that might consider STJ. He also came to UCLA because he wanted back on the west coast/home. Not sure if he's looking to move back east.
