Time to Hire ...

and i know this will not be popular but i still say............."In Lav We Trust"....Go Johnnies!!

I know the Lavin supporters have been asked these questions countless time, but I am going to give it one more try.

Dear Cappy,

-What is it that gives you faith in Steve Lavin?
-What aspect of his coaching impresses you?
-Which player has shown growth under his tutelage?
-What the hell kind of offense do we run?
-Why are juniors with three years in the same program looking so completely lost on defense?
-How is it possible that these same players are STILL deer in headlights when faced with the simplest of zone defenses?
-Is it that you enjoy the timeouts when our own team is on a run?
-Perhaps you like to hear about the highly ranked recruiting classes, only to turn on your TV and see a virtually unknown walk-on in the starting line-up (against Georgetown!)
-Speaking of line-ups, do you have faith in Steve Lavin because we lead the nation with the most different starting line-ups?
-Could it be that you like hearing (in December) that we won't start coming together until February (when we are 6 games into conference play!!!).
-Or (if you didn't care for the February comment), perhaps you liked it when he adjusted his target to March?
-Lastly (and this is my favorite), do you have confidence in Steve Lavin because our team comes out of full timeouts with NO PLAY.

PLEASE.......selfishly, and just for my own sanity........tell me......what are you seeing that gives you such blind faith in this fabulous used car salesman??????

BTW......thank you. This is my therapy and I now feel much better :)

Well first off, how about that win tonight at Butler? That's was a nice showing huh? Anyway, I'm as frustrated as any true fan is. I agree with the untimely time outs and wanted to break my TV set during those called Time outs and uncalled time outs. Some positives, the Johnnies are leading the nation in Blocked shots. That is no small feat. Did you see how it effected Butler tonight? There were times I saw 3 or 4 johnnies going up for a block shot. When was the last team we had that led the nation in a category ? I like the way Branch played tonight also, really steady and under control and he drove the ball I'm for high % baskets too. I also agree that for the most part, players have not progressed, but the season is NOT over, nor is any of their careers at St Johns. These guys are 4 year players and I'm glad for that. What I like most about Coach Lavin is that he gives us hope. Before you explode on me for that comment just think of the abysmal state of the program before he got here. He has brought high talent here, say what you want- but these kids have talent. They could of beat Cuse , Wisc, and Nova this year. With those wins and without choking on another one or two games, we are too 10. I know I know, but point is that they CAN play , they still need to put it together. What if, by some strange reason, Lav is right and we really catch fire this month and next. Is it too late? Let's face it, if you predicted our record right now in the beginning of the season, we are probably 2 or 3 wins off. A Creighton win, and we all will be singing a different toon. I wouldn't get your hopes up for that though, they look awfully tough, but they haven't faced the most athletic team in the BE or the nations too blocking team either. Listen brother, it's tough being a Johnnie fan, I'm with ya, but calling for Lav's head now is ridiculous. He is certainly not nowhere near the boob of a coach as Jarvis, and I have a ton more faith in him than norm Roberts. I say, let it play out, I gotta feeling we might be satisfied with the outcome.
Just my thoughts. Go Johnnies!!

I ve always thought I would wait until the end of the season to judge Lavin. That said,Substitution patterns, game plan, player development, lineups have concerned me. But I feel better after the Butler game. If ,Lavin starts Greene Tues. I will be Dissapointed.

Cappy......that's a fair response. I do disagree with your assessments, but definitely respect your response. In the end, I'll be happier if you're right and I am wrong.

Go Johnnies! Fire Lavin!!!

-Which player has shown growth under his tutelage?

This comment is the single most over stated expectation of college basketball coaches, and certainly in the last 40 years of this program.

We used to say the same exact thing about Carnesecca. David Russell? Just about as good as a freshman as he was as a senior. Chris Mullin? Complete pacage the moment he arrived. Walter Berry - could score against anyone as a HSer, a juco, and a redman, and that's the Truth. But Wayne McKoy never developed, nor a slew of others.I don't recall a single player crediting Coach C. for making him into a player.

Brian Mahoney? Zendon and Felipe - never developed or sniffed what they were touted to become. Robert Werdann?

Fran? As one player might have said "Are your nuts? Or his"

Jarvis? Ruined a pretty good forward - was it King? As far as Marcus Hatten, if Jarvis told to shoot more, he'd have shot more, if we was told to shoot less, he'd have shot more.

Norm? Dwight was hardly Hardy until Norm left.

So, while players improve, and some fit better into programs that showcase their skills, I don't think players are developed by coaches to any great extent. You work on your game, you gain or lose confidence sometimes because of a coach, but developing skills is really u to a player.

Jayson Williams developed tremendously while at SJU. A major reason was his weight/strength gain prior to going pro. So many of SJU players pro careers have been hurt because they were unable to bulk up for the more physical NBA. Sonny Dove, Malik Sealy and Zendon Hamilton are three examples. I hope Maurice Harkless and JaKarr Sampson are not further examples.
You might be able to play backcourt without this strength but both Dove and Sealy would have enjoined much more successful careers with bulkier bodies.

Would you give Carnesecca credit for Williams developing, or did he improve on his own?

No way Lavin will be fired. Really is embarressing that people on this website are saying that. In case you aren't aware, not everyone who is brought into a program automatically develops. You are lucky if you get 1/10 players really get better. Lavin has created an atmosphere of doing things first class and properly, and it takes some time for people to develop. Key might be the staff. Might not be great teachers, but then there are less and less qualified assistants these days.

Mentioning possible successors is ridiculous. Who would you have on the selection committee ? Timing may not be right without a full time President.

I'm all for posts defending Coach but this couldn't be put on the time to hire thread ?

Do you feel Lav is fully committed to the University and working tirelessly to get the men's basketball team to a consistently competitive level? I agree firing talk now is inappropriate. Thanks!

Jayson Williams filled out...I wouldn't say that he developed into a highly skilled college player...kudos to him for recognizing his areas of strength and leveraging them as a pro

Lucky if 1/10 of players get better?? why even bother to have workouts.

I couldn't disagree more. A truly well-rounded coach would excel at multiple components (i.e. Xs and Os, in-game management, recruiting, and player development). It's rare to find someone that actually excels in all categories, and those that do are called Hall of Fame Coaches. However, to say that developing a college player's skills is an "overstated expectation" is just not accurate.

I made the trip to butler and I have been rest assured that he is not going going anywhere and he is completely committed to SJU.

Do people understand that some things go on that we are not aware of and sometimes things need to be done- benchings/suspensions. You need to remember we are talking about 18-22 kids and our coach wants these kids to be successful not only on the court but in life. Let the season play out; There has been some bad coaching this year but we still have to a way to go and we need to pull off a few upsets to balance the games we blew. By chance we get a W tuesday night a lot of things will change.

Peace,
BuckNast.

So, I would ask you to tell me in all the years you've followed SJU basketball, who in your opinion was developed into a player with the help of coaching staff? I listed a bunch of guys who were touted but improved marginally if not at all during their time at SJU. We've had nationally ranked teams, so it would stand to reason that players here improved tremendously under coaching.

LOL!
I would like to submit the above to "Urban Dictionary". Would a variation be "Lavined" ? LOL!

Very torn here. I said it as it was happening, I didn't think the 0-3 start would come back to bite us (just frontloaded scheduling), but that DePaul and Providence would. The difference between 2-5 and 4-3 is a big one, and the only thing we needed to do to win either game is make the same simple game strategy changes we've employed in the last two wins.

I'm very cognizant of the trickyness of fans thinking they know more than the coaching staff, but virtually everyone recognized (1) that we should be pressing, (2) that we should be playing a tighter rotation centered around max minutes for Jordan, Harrison, and Jakarr, and (3) that Branch should be playing more because he brings something we lack - facilitating easy baskets in the half-court.

We've done these things the last two games and - results aside - look like a different team. Jakarr looks more like a sophomore coming off a BE ROY year, Jordan looks more like a BE ROY candidate this year, and suddenly a team that managed just 10 assists in a double overtime game and had twice been held under 10 team assists in 5 Big East games is out there tossing up 15 and 17 back to back.

This is not a coincidence. Looking back, the 13 and 9 minutes that Jordan and Branch - our only point guards - played against Providence in a game where the best point guard in the conference played 50 (as did his backcourt mate Fortune) is an embarrassment. While I'm thrilled the coaching staff has finally made these adjustments, and am excited to see where they can take us (starting tomorrow night), waiting so long to do certain things that were so obvious to anyone following the team ultimately cost us two imminently winnable games that are going to make a huge difference in March, and it was all completely unecessary and (likely) completely avoidable.
