Tariq Owens
Couldn't care less about Tariq. He left, my interest has moved on.
Very narrow minded view. TO was here for 3 years and got his degree. He was nothing but an excellent representative of St. John's University. Couldn't have asked for a better student athlete.
Let's talk reality for a second. Let's say TO played here for Jarvis and not mullin. No way Jarvis let's a 6ft 10 forward with zero inside game play 22 feet from basket hoisting 3's. Renard wanted more touches for Tariq here and though the should be a focal point of the offense. He should be thankful mullin allowed him to shoot from out there.

Chances are TO is not an NBA player. If he is then TT helped his career. If not he simply moved to a better team for his final college season.

We had no post game this season and it killed us offensively. Owen's wouldn't have helped one bit in our half cv out offense.
Its not that Im a big Owens fan. But he had 14 rebounds last game. Of course he would have helped. especially in the depth dept.

He's moved on and so have I. Left us with a big whole on OUR team. I bear him no ill will, just not interested in his accomplishments.

No jabs the staff at STJ good people I have no ill will towards them. Emotions ran high when we decided to leave rightfully so. They wanted to keep Tariq because they Knew his value. I needed him to go because I didn’t believe he could have the year he needed to have at STJ
This guy sounds like an ego maniac. Tariq is not making the NBA whether he was on St John's or Texas Tech so what really was accomplished here?
The weird thing is that he seemingly wasn't like that at all for at least 2.5 years. Then there was a game where Ponds wasn't doing much and he felt they should have gone to Tariq more, and it was all downhill on social media from there.

I do wonder whether he's a proud SJU grad and thinks fondly upon his days here, or whether it's just a piece of paper to him and will be 100 percent all TTU, all the time for the rest of his life.

It just seems to me that college d1 basketball players isolate themselves by choice or regimen from a true college student experience and never quite feel like part of the student population. I know some big time schools place athletes in normal student dorms in order for this to occur but being at what 3 schools, how can Tariq feel a strong allegiance to any?

I did find it odd that he got a framed jersey for Senior Night at Texas Tech. I would feel odd even accepting that if I was him.

. . . in 20% less minutes with double digit growth in FG and FT%. And he'll play very meaningful games in March.

It may well be that Tarik made a great decision to leave SJU to go to Texas Tech. But there was absolutely no need for his father to post that crap in the midst of our three game losing streak. It wreaked of "I told you so" and felt like he was throwing salt in our wounds. If he truly wants what's best for his kid, he should shut the heck up and stay behind the scenes. For my part, I hope we make the dance, draw Texas Tech, and kick their butts. Oh, and I hope Keita has a career game!

Apologies for the misspelling. Tariq not Tarik

I don’t blame the kid for leaving. He wanted to win and thought Texas Tech was his best chance (according to Renard).

What bothered me was how Renard played it out on social media like he was an NBA free agent (twitter). And SJUBB fans were kissing the guys ass, pleading for Tariq to stay. And he consistently takes small subtle jabs at SJUBB, including this weekend.

He is having a productive year and he's cut down on his 3 pt attempts. Not sure where his points are coming from since he had no post up game although he ran the floor very well in transition. His 2 pt shooting percentage is off the charts, but since he gets to the line only 2.1 times per game leads me to believe most of his scoring is not the type of interior offensive player we need. At 6 ft 10 and 205 probably not an nba body.

Still and all, hard to do but have to separate feelings about this kid, who was a solid citizen here who busted it all the time, and his dad who acts like his son is a future nba all star and who is far too vocal on social media.

That's a shame. He's one of the few transfers that decided to take a chance on this staff and commit for a period of at least 3 years. I think he left everything on the court every time he played. After this 8-10, 7th place debacle, I can't say I blame him for deciding to leave. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall in regards to his opportunities on the offensive side, or maybe TO and Renard noticed the staff's deficiencies before anyone else.

Perhaps Tariq was informed last year that they were going to try a different direction by giving Keita more opportunity. Last season I'm sure no one foresaw this "hole" that was created, hindsight is 20/20. I'm not in the know, but one has to imagine it was a myriad of reason why he decided to leave.

I give credit to his staff for being able to pull these talented crop of players together. But they also have to be held to some degree of responsibility when these players decide to leave. The hardest part of this whole process should be getting players to come, not making them stay. I am hopeful we are able to turn the corner next season in regards to roster turnover. This staff is young and learning on the fly, I think we will see improvement.

There is no doubt we could have used him now looking back knowing what we know. Keita is an absolute dud. He can’t rebound to save his life and he has severe movement limitations. All we needed was a guy who could play 15 minutes and grab 5-6 boards. Not a big ask.

Without Owens, though, we have played the best team defense we’ve played since Jarvis. We are unquestionably better on offense too.

His own teammates called him a snake for a reason. When you go from an 0-18 team to over .500 to looking to dance as a team in three years...how do you leave that for a program with less history than St. John’s who was not picked to be better than us at the time of transfer? He fell for a schpeel from the Tech coach, he’s getting less minutes and stats there, and he got lucky that Culver is the fastest rising player in years. Even I projected Morant lottery pick last season...nobody saw Culver becoming a top ten pick.

His pt here would have only been limited by foul trouble. If he went closer to home or to a blue blood I would have understood.

Chris Beard is a much better coach that Chris Mullin. He's been coaching since his student assistant days at Texas. That's your answer. His "schpeel" turned Tech into a top 10 squad this year and Owens is legitimately one of the defenders in the country this year. He is no longer just a thin, bouncy shot blocker. Our defense was the best last year, although our offense was terrible.

You must be trolling if you think this defense is good, let alone the best defense we've played since Jarvis. We can steal the basketball, but other than that this defense can leave a lot to be desired.

Chris Beard has won 74% of his games as a collegiate head coach. He's never had a losing record, and took a team who lost a ton (a season ago) and picked to finish 7th in the Big 12 to the regular season Big 12 Champions and a top 10 national ranking (#6 in the Coaches Poll and #7 in the AP).

Owens isn't an NBA player, and that was gonna be the case whether he stayed at St. John's or not. But it looks as if he's gotten himself into better shape and, as he would've been for us, he was an important catalyst for Texas Tech this season.

If Texas Tech is playing even decently offensively, then they can be a tough out since they play tremendous defense.

Think about this, Kansas had won or shared 14 straight Big 12 titles and it ended this year. Did it end with a name program like Texas winning it? No. Did it end with a future HOF coach at WVU, Bob Huggins, winning it? No. Did it end with a name program like Oklahoma and Lon Kruger winning it? No. It was ended by Texas Tech...That is how good a coach Chris Beard is.

All coaches compared to Mullin have to be amazing right? Chris Beard inherited an 19-13 team with one of the best soph guards in the country in Keenan Evans...the team returned 7/9 leading scorers and this mastermind some how managed a 6-12 conference record. They added Zhaire Smith and Jarret Culver after *cough $200,000 payments cough* and all of a sudden they were good.

It’s amazing to me that with all of the evidence of dirty programs and cheating that our fans ar so quick to credit opposing coaches at schools like Texas Tech for recruiting studs. No good player would go to Texas Tech in Lubbock, TX if they weren’t paid.

Zhaire Smith and Jarrett Culver are better than any players we’ve had since before Artest. We act like Hatten was a god and he never made a single 2-round mock draft.

Just imagine how quickly he would suck if handed our program.
