Tariq Owens
Maybe coming back shows how much he appreciated St. John’s? Think anything potentially negative about it is overblown.
True

Could be indicator about how much he didn't like last staff. New staff no hard feelings

While I think that it's great that he is comfortable enough to show up at an SJU event like this, he left us for greener pastures and I see a negative value in him showing up at an event that is largely designed to help recruiting. What is he going to tell a recruit - "I loved playing here but there are better places to play to help your career?"
Or to put another spin on it, we can hold him up as an example for guys thinking of transferring that they'll post the same numbers, fall short of a championship, and ultimately get waived by an NBA team anyway, so they may as well stay in NYC instead of going to podunk.
That's funny.

PS since you apparently aren't getting the FF e-mails. Payment due. See league messages for details.

Tks.

Sorry, they go to an e-mail I only use for FF so rarely check it. Just responded to you on the FF site.

Well, if you remember his dad's chief (and very public) complaint was that Tariq wasn't getting enough shots here. While he got to play in the championship game, he also didn't get any more shots (he was told in no uncertain terms not to shoot from the outside) and did little to improve his draft status. He went to a better team that got more exposure, but Renard thought his son was going to play himself into the first round. Pretty much with Tariq what you see is what you get - a shot blocker but fair rebounder, not a fantastic on ball defender, and in NBA terms (nor college) not a scorer.

Great decision, but not nothing for his future outlook.
Agree with Beast. I wish Tariq well, but he bailed on SJUBB and serves no role at our Tip Off event. Time for Owens to move on.
Tariq graduated from St. John's. He should always be welcomed back.

He gave 100% effort when he played for us.

Can't blame him for seizing the opportunity to play for a great team and coach and make it to a National Championship game.

There was back and forth posting on Tariq's decision to transfer for like a year. Now the kid visits campus with other player alums and we are back to debating the situation all over again. I realize it's a message board and free to discuss whatever and I don't have to read it but IMO nothing to see here and to rehash.

Main point is that a guy who grad transferred out a little more than a year ago probably hurts more than help in terms of recruits meeting him as a former player.

He did what was best for him, but had he stayed, our bench depth skyrockets whether he starts or not (and he probably starts). We probably make the tourney without a play in, and maybe even survived the first weekend.

That's no knock on him. He did what he thought was best for Tariq, as any kid should.

Great kid, played extremely hard, and very happy he feels comfortable coming back here, but not on this night.

Look, to clarify how I feel, I have no problem with Tariq coming back at SJU events that aren't centered on recruiting. There are events the athletic department is working on or has scheduled that I would love to see all former players (and even ALL former coaches) welcomed back as part of the SJU community and basketball family.
That's odd. Considering how strongly in favor you were of hiring Tim Cluess I'd have thought you wouldn't be hung up about a grad transfer wanting to be around the program.

Aside from getting cut, I heard he had been in town due to passing of his grandmother.

While I didnt like that he left, I respected decision. As he earned his diploma here after three years, I can't fault him for showing up. Doesn't seem like type who would sabotage a message to a recruit, even he even interacted with any of them anyway.

I don't understand your point.

There are many sides to the Owens situation and coming back to the School for Tip Off. And , it’s a question that has validity to yea or nay . Tariq came here as a Transfer from Tennessee to play for Mullin and a chance to showcase his size and Skills . Apparently , Barnes , at Tenn, told him he wasn’t ever going to play much if he stayed . So , he came here , sat his transfer year and then , got his 2 seasons . Mullin , I thought , gave him good quality time and play . Tariq always played hard but , was a outside player when his size screamed for him to play inside and down low . He didn’t have the Core strength to be a BE inside factor . If he was disgruntled over a potential role in his last season of eligibility here , he didn’t seem to advance that at Texas Tech , did he? He did play on a better team there but, unquestionably he would have helped us to a few more crucial wins here last season and it did impact team performance . I think he could have gotten some of the shots that Clark hoisted up , too often with poor results but , that’s a different issue . Clark had too many Zero contribution games . Owens might have stepped up to offset those scoreless and foul prone exits , But, we can appreciate his time here . I would have hoped for more loyalty but , that’s not the World we live in today .

Let’s look forward not backwards.

Count me among the many Redmen.comers who wish Tariq success in his future endeavors.

We are a Catholic university. We are about forgiveness.

And it isn't as if Owens owes anyone of us an apology anyway. He worked his tail off and represented SJU with dignity.

I think this actually is a good thing for recruiting. Here is a kid who went to the final four with one school, but still feels more connected to SJU. Highlight the family atmosphere as much as possible.
