Tariq Owens

My two favorite players from Mullin years were Tariq & Justin Simon. Both gave 100% at all times on both ends of the floor and appeared to be great teammates. Neither may wind up sticking with an NBA team, but I expect they'll both do fine and maximize their opportunities.
Gotta give his father, Renard, credit here. Many on here laughed when he was touting his son as an NBA player, but he's already exceeded expectations, and making it to training camp with a team is an awesome accomplishment. I know a lot of guys on here had a problem with Renard, but it's really refreshing to see a father do everything in his power to put his son in the best position to succeed.
I have to agree Renard made a good move. IMO Mullins coaching had something to do w the transfer. Someone mentioned we didn’t even have a strength and conditioning coach on campus during the summer.

The World of BB like the rest of Society today is a Free Agent domain . Tariq and his Dad saw that and felt his best opportunity was at Texas Tech . Good decision for them as he got to play on a Contending Team and play his Role. At TT he had a much better skilled team than what he would have had at St John’s and they went to the Championship game . Tariq got a lot of credit for his shot blocking , Rebounding in spots and overall contributions . He was always a good Teammate . At TT , he played about the same minutes , played pretty much the same role as he would have here and benefitted from playing with more talent . He got much more Press there than he likely would have gotten here, with our mediocre results . Glad for Tariq he will get a chance to earn money in Europe ,As for being stronger , etc ., Tariq can lift weights until ET returns home and will still have the lanky and long frame he has now . TT is a big time Football school and has more resources for Strength and Conditioning Staff than a BB only school . Just saying .

I agree, both gave 100%, Owens transferring to another school worked out best for him, I thought he was underrated when he was playing for the Johnnies.

While I think that it's great that he is comfortable enough to show up at an SJU event like this, he left us for greener pastures and I see a negative value in him showing up at an event that is largely designed to help recruiting. What is he going to tell a recruit - "I loved playing here but there are better places to play to help your career?"

Or to put another spin on it, we can hold him up as an example for guys thinking of transferring that they'll post the same numbers, fall short of a championship, and ultimately get waived by an NBA team anyway, so they may as well stay in NYC instead of going to podunk.

Remember also, that he got his degree from St. John's, then left as a graduate transfer, so he is an alum. IMO, it would be a very bad look for the school to give Tariq the cold shoulder.

Seriously doubt Tariq has any regrets. Not too many kids get to play a prominent role for a high major that wins 31 games and plays for the national championship. Good for him.

Are you disagreeing with LJSA and trying to say it isn't better to lose in the play in game then to win 5 games in the NCAA T and go into OT before losing the championship game? Uh, I don't know about that one. I think what the other poster was saying is to tell a recruit do you want to go somewhere else or come to SJU where you will be guaranteed to win the NC every year.

Tariq exercised his rights as a Free Agent and left for another program. Turned out to be a smarter move than anyone ever thought. Good for him. Hooray.

But his decision hurt my team. Big time.

So I really don't care if I ever see him at another St. John's event again.

Agree with Beast. I wish Tariq well, but he bailed on SJUBB and serves no role at our Tip Off event. Time for Owens to move on.

Tariq made the right decision for his college career but doubt it has/had an impact on his pro prospects.
His decision made a thin-benched team skeleton-like and surely impacted 1 - 2 games, maybe more given our season-ending meltdown.
Bu he is an SJU Grad and I agree it'd look bad to shun him so we should take the high road, welcome him to events, and let CMA forge a revival of St. John's hoops.

I doubt Tariq just showed up. Hearing the stories of the type of person CMA I'm fine with it

If the time ever comes and CMA is recruiting Baltimore at Mt Zion or Tariq's former AAU team maybe this helps CMA with the coaches down there knowing he did right by Tariq

Look, to clarify how I feel, I have no problem with Tariq coming back at SJU events that aren't centered on recruiting. There are events the athletic department is working on or has scheduled that I would love to see all former players (and even ALL former coaches) welcomed back as part of the SJU community and basketball family.

Maybe coming back shows how much he appreciated St. John’s? Think anything potentially negative about it is overblown.
