Tariq Owens

Owens did not play at all in the first half. I wonder why?
Are you okay, ron? LOL
I thought it was one of his more coherent posts. :)

I was watching and thought. Where's chris mullin... California probably, during a game no less
Classy comments by Tariq. I didnt know about his mom
.

I'm going to root hard for this kid tonight
One of the few players who always came ready to do battle. I knew about his mom because my mom suffered the same illness which forced me to retire from a job I loved. TT under Beard is always well prepared and Tariq has embraced his role.

At least he is playing in the second game of the doubleheader.

Tariq looking good. He made the right decision for him. Wish him well. He is all energy out there with TT.
The young fella has a chance to win a National Championship, happy for him.
I love the way TT plays defense and how each player, including Tariq, knows his role. They are deep and have multiple players who can handle the rock. I think he gets a championship ring and most of us that questioned his decision to leave for a professionally run program have egg on our faces.

Happy for Owens as well. Always seemed like a good kid whatever folks think about his Dad's social media presence.

I will say that Zach seems to enjoy this journey a bit much. This isn't really news that his readers care about. I sense he writes these articles to stick it to the staff for whatever reason.

Tariq gave 110% for two years in Queens, hard not to root for him, despite his pops.

The irony is that his dad wanted more shots and points for his son, and where he landed more constraints and not less were put on him on how much and from where he shoots

There’s no irony. Better coaching staff, better strength and conditioning staff. NCAA finals, Doesn’t have to play Center. An excellent move by Owens even though I would have preferred him to stay.

Had Owens stayed, we maybe win 2-3 more games and still exit in 1st round.
Heron has got to know that he'd be playing vs Owens Monday had he not transfered.

Are the teams in this years Final 4 really more talented than this St. John's team?
I think St. John's has a better basketball tradition than 3 of the 4, yet they can find great coaches and STJ keeps hiring bums.

Better Tradition? Maybe an older Tradition. Days of Yore.

Beast, I wouldn't say constraints as opposed to a better organized offense with true positions defined as opposed to positionless basketball. Davide Moretti is their more talented Federico Mussini who will be a terrific first league player when he returns to Italy. Their grad transfer Mooney is a very good player at SG. They had a true center and their bench is deep. Tariq fit the forward role perfectly and may win a championship. He got more exposure than his dad ever imagined. He played in a system that maximized everyone's ability as opposed to whatever it is that we played. After our last two embarrassing defeats I would say the so-called 5 out we thought we played turned into a West 4th street shootemup shit show. I dread what comes next year but we have no choice but to wait and see what develops in the next few weeks.

Two popular redmen.com myths:

1. Tariq left St. John's so he could shoot more threes - neither he nor his Dad ever said this; in fact from everything I've read he left because he wanted to be better coached and be in an atmosphere where he could improve;
2. He is same Tariq at Texas Tech (e.g. similar ppg and rebounds per game) - this is complete nonsense, forget about his stats if you have watched their games he is playing great man to man defense something he was not known for at SJU. He has profited so much from Beard's coaching. Great decision and hope he plays a great game tomorrow.

Good for Tariq. He graduated and helped us beat Duke, so why not root for him? I'd rather Texas Tech beat UVA anyways.

When he left last year, I thought it was disloyal to his teammates, but now I understand why he wanted better coaching and he certainly has that with Chris Beard, at Tech. Good luck to him.

2. He is same Tariq at Texas Tech (e.g. similar ppg and rebounds per game) - this is complete nonsense, forget about his stats if you have watched their games he is playing great man to man defense something he was not known for at SJU. So they're myths because it's "everything you've read" ??

1. Tariq and Renard felt he should be in the PF role. Wanted to be more involved in the pick and roll offense and felt Tariq could flourish hitting the midrange. This was all spoke about this with staff. Mullin tried hard to keep him. Tariq is 23 years old it was either trust the way things were or try to make your mark elsewhere for a shot at a professional career.

2. Texas Tech was his choice after Maryland did not offer him a ship. They had lost most of their frontline. Tariq had a relationship with a staff member from his AAU days.

3. Tariq has impacted the games just like he did here. This is NO surprise. The kid has great length and plays with great effort. At TT he isn't tasked with defending the strongest or biggest player on the court the whole game. He wasnt a full time starter the entire season. He's hooping and he deserves credit for excelling in his role. Good for him. He leaves it all out there.

4. His relationship with Ponds is good. The only thing that the Ponds FAMILY took exception was when Renard was sneak dissing Shamorie on twitter. Tariq and Shamorie are friends. Ponds isn't held at a different standard. It's a crock of nonsense. He is the best player SJU has had in years and like most he has defencies.
