I love that this has all worked out for Tariq and it is great that he can finish his college career with this unbelievable tournament run. Owens has alway worked hard, had a positive attitude and it is always rewarding for me as fan to see a really good guy get some well deserved glory.
I think seeing him as a signifcant starter on a team playing for the national championship is a positive indicator for our program's talent level. Owens was a terrific player, when he was here, when judged within the context of the things he did well. When judged within the context of things he struggled with, he was often criticized. The bottom line is that at Texas Tech he is being used in a way that lets his strengths shine and leads to winning high level team basketball.
I believe you could say the same thing about all five of our starters on this year's team. Ponds, Simon, Clark, Heron and Figueroa when put on the right team, in the right situation, all have the potential to be significant contributors on a final four type team. The talent level is there.
That said, I believe talent level is only a portion of what makes a great team. It is a complex blend of chemistry, style of play, execution, coaching and using your talent appropriately that makes it all come together. Hardly anyone will argue that as individuals Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett have a level of talent that exceeds any pair of players in the final four.
Additionally, if you went back in time to 2014-2015 and tried to recruit a transfer off the Air Force Academy Falcons roster and you were looking at a Freshman guard who averaged 6.9 points per game you might have been ridiculed that he was not a D1 talent. Yet four years later Matt Mooney is starring in the final four and with another big game tonight might wind up being the MOP of the final four. It makes me realize that in the right place and the right time and with some luck, glory is attainable for more than just the chosen few.
