Tariq Owens

Chris Beard is a much better coach that Chris Mullin. He's been coaching since his student assistant days at Texas. That's your answer. His "schpeel" turned Tech into a top 10 squad this year and Owens is legitimately one of the defenders in the country this year. He is no longer just a thin, bouncy shot blocker. Our defense was the best last year, although our offense was terrible.
Chris Beard has won 74% of his games as a collegiate head coach. He's never had a losing record, and took a team who lost a ton (a season ago) and picked to finish 7th in the Big 12 to the regular season Big 12 Champions and a top 10 national ranking (#6 in the Coaches Poll and #7 in the AP).

Owens isn't an NBA player, and that was gonna be the case whether he stayed at St. John's or not. But it looks as if he's gotten himself into better shape and, as he would've been for us, he was an important catalyst for Texas Tech this season.

If Texas Tech is playing even decently offensively, then they can be a tough out since they play tremendous defense.
He had 3 NBA guards on that team. He had 5 seniors that played at least 14 minutes. They were experienced, talented, and huge.

I get the feeling Tariq wanted to stay, but his father was unhappy w his situation here. Unfortunately his fathers wishes prevailed. Because of Keitas inadequacies, we really could have used him.

Think about this, Kansas had won or shared 14 straight Big 12 titles and it ended this year. Did it end with a name program like Texas winning it? No. Did it end with a future HOF coach at WVU, Bob Huggins, winning it? No. Did it end with a name program like Oklahoma and Lon Kruger winning it? No. It was ended by Texas Tech...That is how good a coach Chris Beard is.
Texas is 16-15. Future HOF coach Bob Huggins and WVU are 12-19. Oklahoma is 19-12 and just 7-11 in conference.

Kansas lost because this is the worst team they’ve had in more than a decade after Azubuike got hurt. They were 9-0 before he got hurt and are 14-8 after. It’s not a mystery.

Zhaire Smith was only considered a top 200 recruit when he came out of HS. Whether, he was under-recruited or a late bloomer.... The staff at Texas Tech still has to receive some form of props, as they may have saw the potential Smith exuded. Culver was anywhere between top 250-300 recruit when he came out of HS. These aren't high-level recruits when they were prepsters.

So, Texas Tech's staff deserves credit in some way, shape or form.

At some point, you need to learn to say no to your parents, especially when you are in your 20s.

They deserve credit for both recruiting Smith and Culver and making sure they (and others) were paid discretely. Smith had 20 offers from Texas to Ga Tech.

I’ll never be convinced schools like Texas Tech and Baylor are clean—especially right after Tubby was there. How does Brandone Francis and Tommy Hamilton end up in Lubbock Texas to a school that only made 15 tournaments in history and never made an Elite Eight?

So, what if Smith had offers from Texas and Georgia Tech.... That's irrelevant to him only being a top 200 recruit.

Honestly, I have no idea about Texas Tech's payments to Smith or Culver nor do I care. With that even being said, I find it hard for someone to offer those kinda dollars that you mentioned to what were considered "non-elite" prepsters.

Regardless, even if what you're saying is true, it still doesn't matter as they still had to be honed and coached. I'm the last person to prop up anyone, let alone coaches, in order to demean or defame someone else. Chris Beard has shown me he has some chops. It's just that simple.

Is there any evidence Texas tech is paying players or are we just letting our jealousy of success get to us here?

What I hate most about it is people who think every program plays by the rules. All programs cheat. It varies by level. And when the NCAA has so few investigators across how many schools across how many sports they go where they are told to go. I hate having to spell it out like that but amazes me when everyone points to money.

It certainly appears to have played out that way. To appease the father who had wild Fabrications of his son becoming Kevin Durant and making the NBA when in fact that will never happen.

Owens won't ever be Durant or even a starter but I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility of him playing some NBA ball. Having a long 6'11 shot blocker who can run the floor and has good small ball experience could be useful for an NBA team if even just as a practice player.

There is no way that a 24 year old toothpick who can't even avg 10 and 6 in college will get a sniff at the NBA. No way.

If he continues to develop his body and work hard on his game I wouldn't say never to a 6'11 player with his level of athleticism. Regardless he and his father are entitled to their dreams and if he falls short so what at least he seems to be giving it his all. He will make money somewhere playing and for a long time too.

I didn't think Cedric Jackson would ever play in an NBA game. . .

I get what you're saying. But someone with his skill set would have to be an absolute monster on the glass. Remember, he has no semblance of a post game or any offensive moves.

Article in today's Post on Tariq. Interesting quote below on why he decided to leave. Perhaps a bit of a dig on the hands-off treat them like professionals approach that appears to be Chris Mullin's preferred coaching style. In any event, no denying that the move has worked out very well for Owens.

“I knew this would be an environment that I’d be able to come down and work in,” Owens said. “The main thing that attracted me is the fact I’d be given the opportunity to work as hard as I can. I like being in environments where you have something to prove and you have to work to really achieve something. Coach Beard doesn’t give anything easy. It doesn’t matter who you are.”

Can't deny that he made the right decision. Give him credit for recognizing that he needed hands on coaching which he was apparently not getting here.

Mullin took a pro approach to the college game; a different approach than the overwhelming majority of college coaches because Mullin came out of the pro game, not the college one. Mullin never had to be coaxed and cajoled and babied into improving his game because as a player his devotion to improving himself was legendary. Well documented universal problem when great players try coaching. In addition, my experience is that many successful people in whatever field, exhibit the stubbornness and resistance to change or help as Mullin has. That's why few great players have succeeded as coaches. Looks like Mullin will add to that list but we shall see.

Not hating just being realistic...can't ever see him getting minutes in an NBA game. NBA guards would eat him alive the kid is like 180 lbs at almost 7 ft tall. He's easy for players to back down in the post and his defense is mostly block or allow an easy layup/dunk when he misses. In today's NBA at 6'11 you need to be able to have a full offensive arsenal. Jump hook, floater, mid range, 3 pt, FT's. The only thing he can do consistently is hit mid range sometimes. He is not a real 3 pt threat and he's just not a shooter even though he wants to shoot. If he was 6'11 with Zion's build then he definitely would have a place in the NBA IMO. But he's just not strong enough.
