Tariq Owens

Just like his old man, he can't just talk about this year's positive experience at Texas Tech. He just has to add those subtle back handed digs.

I appreciate TO's intensity and work ethic, but go away already.

Good luck to T.O. He's a hard worker and we really could of used him here this year. Im sure he has more insight to the program than any of us fans here, so obviously his decision was a wise one. He has just a good chance of being drafted as anyone on our squad besides Shamorie

Where do you think he gets it from, the apple don't fall too far from the tree. We've seen his dad's antics. There is no reason to take digs at St John's where he graduated from and spent 3 years.

Also I don't understand all of this " he made the right decision". He's ending up playing overseas either way.

he's playing in the sweet 16, he's gotten nice exposure, and he's a hard worker. Wish the kid the best. End of story.

Unlike here his team is still alive in the tourney. He made the correct decision concerning his college career. This has nothing to do with his pro prospects which are probably very limited no matter where he went to school.

Look, where he plays or doesn't play professionally has nothing to do with the fact that he has gotten to play a very substantive role on a team that has made a run into the second weekend of March Madness, which is the Holy Grail of the college basketball experience.
Regarding his comments on Texas Tech coaching I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, it does seem like a subtle dig on coaching at SJU. On the other hand, countless posters have done nothing but pan that coaching staff over the past few weeks. I think it is clear by now that for Mullin to succeed as a college coach, he is going to have to make some adjustments to his coaching style as well as his staff. If these kind of comments from former players help Coach to realize that some changes are necessary going forward, so much the better. Maybe I am stretching to read a positive into the quote, but I do think there are two ways of looking at it.

Owens all but said that you could get away without maximum effort here, depending on who you are. Could have kept the bitterness to himself, but I guess it made him feel good to let it out. I have seen him a bunch this season, including once up closeat the AA arena in Miami. He has played well every time, and within himself. His teammates seem to love him, and I'm sure it's nice to be in the sweet 16.

Interesting- (Player Development)

“Everybody has things we need to work on,” Owens said Wednesday, “and our coaching staff, instead of telling us we need to work on them, they put plans in place for us to work on them, and I really enjoy that about this program.”

Owens considered transferring to Maryland and returning to St. John’s for his final year of eligibility, but settled on Texas Tech because of head coach Chris Beard and his staff.

“I knew this would be an environment that I’d be able to come down and work in,” Owens said. “The main thing that attracted me is the fact I’d be given the opportunity to work as hard as I can. I like being in environments where you have something to prove and you have to work to really achieve something. Coach Beard doesn’t give anything easy. It doesn’t matter who you are.”
wish him luck in Europe, he has no shot an NBA no matter how hard is old man begs!
he has a better shot at the pros than anyone on our roster besides Shamorie, and if Mullin and Slick both stay his stock will fall again with Mullin. Sad but true

next year ponds will be (if he stays) the greatest scorer in SJU history! Which is an amazing feat if you think about it. Now, imagine him doing that and not being a clear 1st rounder after all the players SJU sent to the league. Mind boggling

And I'm sure the NY Post writer had no interest in his experience at STJ's, Owens forced it upon him. SMDH.

Ironically, Tariq revealed the flaw in CMs philosophy: expecting college kids to be accomplished pros without intensive coaching.
I wish the guy well and yes we could’ve used him this season, but enough already indeed.

Owens is basically the same player this year he was for us, albeit for a better team. Would we have been better had he stayed? Probably, but to what extent, IMO, not much unless he could have changed the team chemistry. The classy move would be to say nothing regarding SJU but as I interpret his comments, I don't think he is wrong.

Not mind boggling at all, he is not a first rounder and proved it the only place that matters, on the court. Players are not drafted on stats but by the eye test.

I wish Owens and his dad would just be quiet about St. John's. I probably has to do with their considerable egos - it's not as if Zion trasferred to Kansas or something. Basically not too many fans of college basektball other than SJU and TT give a crap about him.

He made a good move for himself, and considering how badly our season ended it is difficult to assert that Owens would have been the difference between a Sweet 16 or better SJU finish and the shit show we just witnessed.

The quote I heard over the past 2 weeks that resonated loudest was that a coach said the hardest new part of his job is to have to re-recruit the kids already on his team each season, and that is pretty damned telling in terms of the pressures on all but the best programs.

He’s no Dan Calandrillo, that’s for sure :)

If he stayed, equally probable our results are dramatically improved. His shot blocking masks a lot of defensive flaws.

Agreed. I bet we don't lose by more than 20 to Marquette in the BET, and could have given ASU a closer game in the NCAA's, especially if Heron didn't win a sombrero for FT shooting.

Actually imagine if the top 7included Mussini and Owens, and Keita was the 8th man, and Dixon Trimble 9/10. Pretty formidable team. Not even mentioning Lovett in that sentence

I wish Owens well. He stuck with us for 3 years, mostly bad years, and he made a decision none of us were happy about but he is well vindicated by his performance at TT.
There is no reason we should not have been in the same situation as TT had a couple of players worked out better. Ironically TT has a better version of Federico Mussini in Davide Moretti. They play intense defense and because of better players around him Owen's doesn't need to shoot 3 pointers which our staff encouraged of every player from 1 to 5.
