Tariq Owens
[
Tariq announced his transfer April 9. At that time LJ wasn't even committed (April 20) and Heron wasn't even a consideration (announced he was pulling out of the draft and transferring May 29) which means the starting lineup for 18/19 was looking like it was about same as finished 17/18 with Keita replacing Bashir and Dixon being the first off the bench. If LJ and Heron don't show up that's an NIT team so maybe besides looking for another system perhaps he also wanted a tourney opportunity.
I thought the timeline was Tariq announced he was leaving on April 9, which opened up a scholarship that was used on LJ. Then when Heron hit the radar Diakite "decided" to transfer. It would have taken some creative moves to have LJ, Heron and Tariq all on the current roster. I really liked Tariq, but not over three years of LJ or over Heron.
Other Key Dates, Eli Wright announced for St Johns April 19 and David Caraher April 14. So while you may be correct there were plenty of other spots for LJ to take. Plus based on your POV, assuming this was all preordained, that would mean Tariq was pushed out to make room so why is everyone mad at him?
Simon was in over his head at Arizona. It’s a different situation. Transferring twice is a bad look.
Ordinarily I'd agree, but Tennessee essentially forced him out. TO and his dad met with Barnes and didn't hear anything positive. Barnes knew TO would leave as a result, and undoubtedly wasn't crying over it.

Maybe Barnes was less impressed by his dad than with Tariq. Barnes knew how he wanted to build his program. We were taking sloppy seconds but Tariq was a great addition compared to a couple of others.

Mullin allegedly implor3d Tariq to stay.
Yakwe’s also left later in the Spring which may have allowed us to get Mustapha.
I honestly forget the exact timeline.
It’s all passed us.
Let’s move on, and focus on these last critical swatch of games, including more than 1 in the BET and in the Dance, I hope.
When Owens left it wasn’t clear Texas Tech was even a tournament team with all of their losses. Jarrett Culver changed that single-handedly going from a 3* recruit two years ago to not starting last year to a lottery pick this. He is the most improved college player in the country.

Owens left a starting role and big minutes for less of a role on a team that was only projected to be slightly better than us.

Simon was in over his head at Arizona. It’s a different situation. Transferring twice is a bad look. Both teams improved when Owens left too. If he wasn’t playing I’d understand, but he was and he was a leader.
Simon was not in over his head at Arizona. In fact, more than a few people connected to Arizona feel he is what was missing the past two years. A tough, athletic, defensive player who can guard multiple positions. For the past couple of years, the Big East has been considered a better conference than the Pac 12 and Simon is going very well in the Big East.
Also I discredit the 3 pt shooting thing since Mullin allows anyone to take the open three regardless of who, where, when or why. He may have had other issues with the offense but I can't believe that the number of 3's was an issue, no matter what his dad or others have said or implied.
I think there was a game last season where Owen's shot 6 for 11 from the field and post game Dad Retard or Renard went on a rant that Tariq needs more shots. The very next game Owen's shoots 0-9.

You misunderstand my POV. I don’t think it was preordained, more that when the wheels stopped turning we ended up with two solid players who were immediately eligible. And so I agree, don’t know why folks are mad.

According to who though? That is obviously Tariq’s dad’s version. 99% of the time in those situations the parent looks for assurances and the coach says something like all pt has to be earned or the best players will play.

Owens wasn't that good a basketball player. He had his games where he really came out but he was very flawed too. Thought he was KD but couldn't hit jumpers nearly as consistently as he or his father thought he could. The thing I miss most is his passion. Maybe we have another win or two with him but he's not a gamechanger.

Maybe not a game changer but certainly would have filled a BIG gap. And, a few more games could mean a much better seed in the tourney and maybe a more certain decent run. Don't blame staff for his departure at all. The kid and his father did what they wanted and thought best. Had he stayed, I believe (jmho) that he would have had just as good a year here, as the opportunity for pt was there and he was getting pt anyway….

But, I agree WUTB so let's enjoy what we have.

Lol please name these supposed “people connected to Arizona.” If there are “more than a few” it should be easy. Your statement is just not accurate.

Simon played 7 mpg and was DNP’d 10x as a freshman. He was then recruited over with the additions of Kobi Simmons and Rawle Alkins (in addition to being behind Kadeem Allen, Alonzo Trier, and PJC). He wasn’t going to play until his senior year. If you don’t think that’s in over his head or that he wasn’t at least somewhat of a bust for being the #30 player of his class...I don’t know what to tell you.

Arizona was 28-7 last year. PJC played basically the entire game at PG. Trier and Alkins played the wings and are exponentially better players than Simon will ever be, and Brandon Randolph (leading team in scoring this year) was the sixth man. #1 pick Andre Ayton and 7’0 senior Rustic were top three scorers for them. Simon would have played 7-10 mpg for them.

That is not the same as "in over your head." If that was the case by your same logic half of the SJU roster is "in over it's head" based simply on production. Dixon-before he transferred/Williams/Trimble/Keita/Roberts/Earlinigton all could be classified that way based simply on production or lack of it.

He was definitely going to get squeezed with regards to playing time with kids like Alkins coming in, that is not the same as "in over your head." Bench or role players are not the same as "in over your head." You make it sound like a mid-major player trying to play at an elite level.

He could've played a role at Zona and perhaps waited his turn but he chose to leave.

You constantly want to argue what certain descriptions mean to different people. The Simon mention was clearly collateral to the discussion of Owens. I used him as an example of an understandable transfer in passing. Now I’m forced to defend a description I spent less than a second thinking of? It seemed more charitable than bust...shall we go with that?

What do you call a top 30 player that gets DNP’d ten times and only averages 7 mpg if not a bust? Look at the 2015 RSCI top 30 and tell me who has had a worse career. #27 was his he teammate Donovan Mitchell. #37 Malik Beasley is averaging 12 ppg in his third NBA season. #71 and #72 Jamal Murray and Tyler Lydon are in the NBA with #89 Shake Milton.

I apologize if “in over his head” wasn’t the best description. I didn’t think I’d have to defend it like a dissertation. Simon would have been pushed out or relegated to the deep bench for three years if he stayed. And that would have been silly for a player of his ranking.

I hope Yakwe and Owens are happy with their decisions and we should be happy with Figgy's and Heron's decisions. Agree we should focus on 2019.

No jabs the staff at STJ good people I have no ill will towards them. Emotions ran high when we decided to leave rightfully so. They wanted to keep Tariq because they Knew his value. I needed him to go because I didn’t believe he could have the year he needed to have at STJ
