Reading through this thread has left me totally confused. Sanders committed to us and then changed his mind, which he is entitled to do. We can speculate all we want, but no one on this board knows the exact reason why.
As for his Mom wanting him out of the city, that is understandable. A lot of high school players attend Prep Schools out of state in an effort to avoid the negative environment of their neighborhoods. OSL has a house where in the Bronx where the players live together, in an effort to build team unity.
The only thing that I feel bad about in this situation, is that our staff worked very hard to get this commitment. However, it is not a big loss. While he may be considered one of the best players in the city or state, he is still only a 3* recruit. This should tell you something about the quality of basketball in the city right now. I have not previously commented on his recruiting or signing, for the simple reason that I have never seen him play. I believe that he is a good player because our staff recruited him. However, he is definitely not a program changer and can be replaced. This will in no way affect the staff's relationship with OSL simply because the coaches there and with the Lightning, see the progress Alexander and Wusu made as freshman.
Additionally, I have noticed that whenever something negative happens, some on here can't wait to point a finger at Coach Anderson. DeMeo gets fired and sues, "Anderson has to accept part of the blame". Why, he fired an employee who was not productive and did not meet his standards, simple business. As for the merit's of DeMeo's suit, I have absolutely no idea. However, I can tell you that I lost respect for him when he added alleged details about the team that were not relevant to his being fired. Players transferred, it's Coach Anderson's fault. Has anyone on here actually talked to the players who transferred? Supposition does not equal facts. 18 year old high school student changes his mind, Coach Anderson's fault. I am sure that in the history of basketball and life, Sanders is the first 18 year old to change his mind, LMAO!
Personally, I have enjoyed the first two years of Coach Anderson's tenure and am looking forward to rooting hard for this years team. I have recently heard Father Shanley, Mike Cragg, and Mike Anderson talk about their vision for St Johns basketball. They are all on the same page as far as expectations for St Johns and our basketball team. I find this simple fact very encouraging for our success going forward. Therefore, I will continue to root very hard for St Johns and the players that are here.
Concerning Sanders, I wish the best for the young man and his family as his journey continues.
