Sanders Decommits

Hey Mullin almost slipped outta Looie's hands to be a Dookie because Chris's mom wanted him to go away to school.

Chris stayed, lucky for us, but I always wondered if he had gone away and been away from his Flatbush/Marine Park cronies, if his sobriety would have taken a different track.

Sanders' mom has an older son going to Cincinnati, so maybe he will join him there. Is that safer?

P.T. concerns.

His older brother, Jermaine Sanders played against us while at Cincy when they were still in the Big East so no, he isn’t there anymore.  He actually graduated from Rice High School and then played and hopefully graduated from Cincy after a four year career that ended in 2015.

Did I miss something racist? It seems like all of Dee's posts since CMA was hired have had a weird agenda.

In 1987-88 mjmaherjr wanted to commit to st johns after I went to St Johns vs Providence at Alumni Hall Shelton Jones scoring if my memory serves me correct 31 points. I had to already rule out Pace University because of the cost.. My parents wanted mjmaherjr to go to Oneonta. mjmaherjrs parents went to a friends party and came home one night and I might or might not have been drunk but I remember them walking in and my mom yelling "  you aren't going to Stoneonta !!! ". So then I got my way and committed to SJU ( ironically I dont smoke pot )

Moral of this story is nothing. But I dont believe for a second his mom talked him out of it. You just dont give your decisions and commit without input from your family. Good luck to him. SJU79 will know  a lot more than me but just my opinion and I very well could be wrong but something smells worse than the hot dogs at Carnesseca Arena and I'm sure SJU79 knows the truth just I dont have a good feeling.I need a haircut ( pun intended )

Seems like I missed some deleted posts but frankly hate the political bs almost as much as I hate the Yankees pathetic at bats tonight.
Sanders would have been a very solid 4 year player for us. Wish him luck and let's move on.

I, too, must have missed the political posts.

Guessing somebody thought this was a Bernie thread?  /media/kunena/emoticons/tongue.png

Reading through this thread has left me totally confused. Sanders committed to us and then changed his mind, which he is entitled to do. We can speculate all we want, but no one on this board knows the exact reason why.

As for his Mom wanting him out of the city, that is understandable. A lot of high school players attend Prep Schools out of state in an effort to avoid the negative environment of their neighborhoods. OSL has a house where in the Bronx where the players live together, in an effort to build team unity.

The only thing that I feel bad about in this situation, is that our staff worked very hard to get this commitment. However, it is not a big loss. While he may be considered one of the best players in the city or state, he is still only a 3* recruit. This should tell you something about the quality of basketball in the city right now. I have not previously commented on his recruiting or signing, for the simple reason that I have never seen him play. I believe that he is a good player because our staff recruited him. However, he is definitely not a program changer and can be replaced. This will in no way affect the staff's relationship with OSL simply because the coaches there and with the Lightning, see the progress Alexander and Wusu made as freshman.

Additionally, I have noticed that whenever something negative happens, some on here can't wait to point a finger at Coach Anderson. DeMeo gets fired and sues, "Anderson has to accept part of the blame". Why, he fired an employee who was not productive and did not meet his standards, simple business. As for the merit's of DeMeo's suit, I have absolutely no idea. However, I can tell you that I lost respect for him when he added alleged details about the team that were not relevant to his being fired. Players transferred, it's Coach Anderson's fault. Has anyone on here actually talked to the players who transferred? Supposition does not equal facts. 18 year old high school student changes his mind, Coach Anderson's fault. I am sure that in the  history of basketball and life, Sanders is the first 18 year old to change his mind, LMAO!

Personally, I have enjoyed the first two years of Coach Anderson's tenure and am looking forward to rooting hard for this years team. I have recently heard Father Shanley, Mike Cragg, and Mike Anderson talk about their vision for St Johns basketball. They are all on the same page as far as expectations for St Johns and our basketball team. I find this simple fact very encouraging for our success going forward. Therefore, I will continue to root very hard for St Johns and the players that are here.

Concerning Sanders, I wish the best for the young man and his family as his journey continues.

Typical reasoned, calming post from Panther, I think we are all passionate fans of SJBB or we wouldn't be here, but why anyone would get upset/outraged by a decision made by a teenager is beyond me. Sorry he changed his mind, would have been a good addition (not that I know anything about him other than what I read here), wish him well, and am confident CMA will unearth someone else who will fit his vision. How long until season starts? Need something now that Yanks are eliminated.

I remember all the way back to when Storr committed that many thought we were out of the Sanders hunt and most everyone was OK with that.

Sanders’s commitment was gravy, a nice to have, not a must have.

excited to see where the staff goes from here.

I think posters far too often equate being upset with a certain situation to being upset with the staff.

As a fan, I don’t get caught up in the prideful “well forget him, he didn’t want to be here” approach. Was he a player we all should have been extremely excited to have? Yes. So of course it sucks to see him change his mind. Pointing to him “only” being a 3 star and suggesting it’s an easy replacement makes us look disgruntled and disingenuous IMO. We are all excited about 2 former 3 star city kids set to lead us to what many hope will be our must successful season in decades. If who we sign next is a 3 star, are the posters framing this a not a big loss going to say that’s not a big add?

Not everything is an attack at the staff, who IMO,  we are extremely lucky to have.

And TBH w college’s version of free agency, decommitments and transfers are expected and easier to address

I loved Sanders game. He hit a growth spurt around his freshman season and turned into a great scorer. I think Sanders will be a fantastic ball player. I hope it’s in the big 10 and not at providence or the hall.

A couple of things have me scratching my head here:
1. We get a commitment from a kid and we all get very excited about the commitment. Then the kid changes his mind and we're not supposed to be disappointed?? Says who?

2. The staff is targeting mostly 3 star kids, especially those who seem to fit CMA's style of play. We've seen the staff coach up lower ranked kids so we've come to have confidence in the kids the staff targets, with little regard to ranking. No one criticized the commitment because "Sanders is 'only' 3 stars". Yet now that he's decommited, he's being dismissed as 'only' 3 stars. You can't have it both ways.

And lastly, I have not seen one single poster go off the deep end over this young man's change of heart. I have not seen anyone bash this young man. Yes there has been some speculation about dirty dealings, but that's one of the things that posters do on message boards;  they speculate. And a situation like this will definitely result in speculation. As long as it is done respectfully, I don't see why anyone would have a problem with it. I also don't really see the need for some posters to tell other posters how they should or should not be reacting over this. You want to forget about it and move on, that's your choice. You want to be pissed off, disappointed or whatever, that's also your prerogative. To each his own.

I, for one, am very disappointed by Sanders' decision to decommit. He would have been a very good addition to our roster and would have reinforced our ability to get quality kids from the NYC area. However, I recognize that in the "modern era", decommits (and transfers) happen all the time and are an integral part of today's culture.

In the end, I  wish Sanders well and fully believe that CMA and his staff will bring in a quality class for next season.

As usual Panther brought a large measure of perspective with his post on this topic.

I only wish Lisa Sanders and her family the best in the future and that they stay safe. It is a tragedy what can happen in unsafe neighborhoods with rampant crime.

We all need to take a step back and not judge motives one way or another.

Moving on...........I trust the triumvirate of Anderson, Cragg, & Shanley (great name for a law firm.)
