Sanders Decommits

Kid is one of best players in the state, he's from Queens and plays at OSL, a school which we have a strong connection to
While there's nothing that we can do about this, and we gotta move on, let's not make it seem like it's no big deal that we lost him. Especially since it was a pretty big deal on this board when we got a commitment from him.

Kid is a shooter for sure but not a next-level type kid.  A kid that would be more role-player than starter-type.  We get excited about every commit in this board.    I always love landing the local players.  That said he is far from irreplaceable like a Ponds etc.   He wants to be somewhere else and at this point his family probably knows more than he does.

Julian wasn’t a next level kid either until he was.

IMHO, I don’t think there is anything shady about this, just some conflict within a family trying to decide what each thinks is better for the kid.  I know we have had some “questionable” de-commitments so I understand the skepticism.  Do keep in mind, this was a verbal commitment, the National signing period doesn’t begin until next month so he was free to be contacted during live periods by other programs despite the verbal (you can call it unethical but there is nothing in the rules that prevent it during a live period).  No if there was some assistant coach who “accidentally” ran into him at a barbershop, well let’s just say my opinion would change.

I’ve seen kids make a decision on a school and change their mind and decide to go elsewhere, sometimes it had to do with a parents wishes.  A highly publicized one is when in a televised event (part of an ESPN segment I believe), when Kellen Winslow Jr. committed to attend and play football at the University of Washington, his father Kellen Winslow Sr. objected to the choice and said more discussion needed to occur.  The Hall of Fame father refused to sign the Letter of Intent (Jr., while a senior in high school, hadn’t turned 18 yet).  Jr. eventually wound up a Miami.  The reason for the change was different than the reason given my Sanders.

This sucks because of the timing with the signing period being a month away and with his commitment, the stafff probably backed off on other players.  The good news is we still have two guards who have given their verbal commitment and a staff that works hard.

This ^^

Sucks that he changed his mind, but this is college.  You are replacing players every year.
Maybe we get burned and don't replace him with someone as good.   Maybe we replace him with someone who is better...

Julian is an SJU unicorn - a local underecruited player who becomes a star in year 2 no less.

I legit can’t compare him to anyone before at SJU so I definitely can’t compare him to any recruit.

This isn’t a 5* player. I don’t think it’s a big deal at all.  He will find where he wants to go.  Good shooter and OSL kid but aside from that we will be more than fine aside from time spent on recruiting him.  Would like to see more athletic kids who can also shoot.

When we got him he reminded you of Dwight hardy. Now he’s gone so no big deal cause he wasn’t a five star?

No, this is exactly the type of kid St. John’s should be building around and we don’t have to blame the staff one iota without still being honest in saying this sucks. Sanders figured to be the most natural scorer of the backcourt crew. I’m sure the staff isn’t looking at it as no big loss.

I am not comparing Julian to anyone ( and I can’t think of anyone) but just saying, you never know how a recruit will turn out.

I am disappointed for several reasons, as was staff apparently. That said, in these times nothing shocks me. I, like a highly respected poster, feared Storr commitment may not stick since it came out of blue & was not one built on long relationship. Lastly, the OSL “pipeline” theory obviously merits pause. We got two very solid kids, yes, but never assume anything, as Ayo and Sanders seem indicative of.

One thing is certain,
recruiting is hard, unpredictable and fluid.

Educated chatter says PT & not family concerns about NYC was core issue.

On to the next one!

Yes, this sucks and the timing is bad and while a difference scenario, when Jordan Riley picked Georgetown over us, we then went out and got a commitment from Pinzon and we still have Storr and King (hopefully that doesn’t change).  I am sure the staff will find someone, whether now, in the winter or spring to fill the void and possibly someone who plays a different position.

If the mothership is so worried about the dangers of NYC / their neighborhood one would think she would have moved the family to a place she felt safer years ago.  I’m on board with the playing time theory.

Great points. I have to say I see the same way that the chatter is indicating, about PT concerns. I believe there were some on here who wondered if that would be an issue, I'm definitely included. I personally thought it already seemed like Pinzon was being recruited over, and he stands to benefit the most here. Heck, if you consider the fact that it's not sure thing that Posh will leave after this year, or even after the next, that's one guard who's locked into 30-35 minutes at one of the guard spots.

I guess the frustrating part is nothing has changed with regard to PT concerns, and just wish he would have seen this earlier, instead of committing first. Frustrating indeed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not losing sleep over this, but if this was a kid from somewhere else I would barely bat an eyelash. It just stings that he's one of the best players in the area, and we had him and lost him. As you say, time will tell what kind of college player the kid turns out to be, and who we replace him with. But to those on the board(not you) who sang his praises when we were recruiting him and when we got a commitment from him, and are now dismissing this as no big loss, you can't have it both ways.

It’s a shame because kid really wants  to be here. A LOT going on here and even more half truths.
They now  need to lock down Storr and they know it. As for other recruits they have not let their guard down and are actively involved with 2 players that should make the board happy if it works out.

By all accounts, right now, not a next level type kid. But any time you get one of the best(maybe the best) players in the city/state to stay home, that's a big get. Even if the kid is isn't a MCAA. So if he was a big get, then he is a big loss. Even if he doesn't turn out to be a very good college player. At least that's the way I see it.

wasn’t it kind of the same thing with Jayson Williams when he came here?

He reminded me of Hardy stylistically with his build and shooting, not results-wise.

You know what, that's a good comparison and one I had not thought of.
To be honest I keep forgetting how good Jayson was during his 2nd year here.
