Sanders Decommits

It’s a shame because kid really wants  to be here. A LOT going on here and even more half truths.
They now  need to lock down Storr and they know it. As for other recruits they have not let their guard down and are actively involved with 2 players that should make the board happy if it works out.

Thanks for sharing this info. Is there actually a chance that Storr might decommit as well?

One other thought: If the story about his Mom wanting him to go away is true, then you've got to admire the Mom for sticking to her guns, and you've got to admire the young man for heeding her advice. Even if it took a while for him to do so. As we all know, it sometimes takes teenagers a while to realize that what a parent is telling them is actually what's best for them. It stinks for us, but at the end of the day we wouldn't have had a productive player here if he was still hanging around his old neighborhood. With all due respect to Robert Young, "Mother Knows Best".

From Zach

Jaquan Sanders has decommitted to St. John's. He tells me the decision was based on needing to get away from New York and eliminate distractions. He comes from Far Rockaway, a dangerous neighborhood in Queens. He said it had nothing to do with St. John's.

For what it's worth, I've seen Far Rockaway in the news too often lately in regard to shootings out here in NYC.

If the mothership is so worried about the dangers of NYC / their neighborhood one would think she would have moved the family to a place she felt safer years ago.  I’m on board with the playing time theory.

Not everyone can just up and move to get out of a situation

Exactly!!! It's very naive to think people who live in dangerous neighborhoods, prefer to live there and don't want a better life for themselves and family.

Julian is an SJU unicorn - a local underecruited player who becomes a star in year 2 no less.

I legit can’t compare him to anyone before at SJU so I definitely can’t compare him to any recruit.

wasn’t it kind of the same thing with Jayson Williams when he came here?

You know what, that's a good comparison and one I had not thought of.
To be honest I keep forgetting how good Jayson was during his 2nd year here.

That is a good comparison.  Jayson had a huge year his junior year (second year as he sat out his freshman year as a Prop 48).  When he committed to us his senior year of High School hadn’t begun yet and he hadn’t started a High School varsity game yet (he transferred to CTK after his sophomore year when Power Memorial closed and he came off the bench that first season at CTK).  I really would have loved to see a healthy Jayson his senior year.

Mods, can we move the Sanders thread in the 2022 Recruit Section from the “Sticky” portion at the top and remove “”(Committed)” since that is no longer the case.

Heck, maybe in a day or two combine this thread with that one which should be enough for even the occasional visitors to see it.

So many different factors can enter  into a teenager/moms decision.

The timing of this is so close to  our former assistant coach who  had made a
scathing attack on Coach Anderson

Statements  like the the players don't like him,  look at the mass exodus of
last year's teammates ,do not encourage positive recruiting results.

When a local player feels that his playing time will  not be  secure, what does that say
about the confidence level of that player.  Especially when he knows the caliber of local player we  have.
Sanders has played with these guys before, he is well aware of their ability.
The really good ones, recruits, are self assured and don't have that fear.

When he verballed  I was fearful of this happening, WHY ???

We had showed  that we really wanted him and over a serious period of time..
Then we courted him on that recent weekend, which was to be ceremonial.
It was to end in his giving us a verbal.  But ut-oh he stalled. That was a tell and a red flag--DANGER.
That was not a good sign, and the rest is history..  Verbals are great for players, not so great for the team

Better now than later though.

1.  It was good to land Sanders and keep signing talented local players.
2.  It stinks to lose him, but it isn't the end of the world either - the program is strong enough and deep enough that its fortunes do not depend on one recruit.
3.  If the reason given is legitimate, then you have to respect that decision.
4.  If it isn't legitimate, that will be seen soon enough, but this is all part of the territory in the recruiting game.
5.  When one door closes, another opens - that may be more PT for a player already on the roster or a spot for another recruit.

We'll be fine.  Just a blip on the radar, or a molehill compared to the mountain of previous SJU disasters.

or they would have had this discussion before announcing his commitment to SJU.

one door closes and another opens.  Plus, they already have 2 guards coming in with King and Storr.  Adding them to Posh, Dylan and Pinzon should make a nice backcourt with depth next year.

Hey Mullin almost slipped outta Looie's hands to be a Dookie because Chris's mom wanted him to go away to school.

Chris stayed, lucky for us, but I always wondered if he had gone away and been away from his Flatbush/Marine Park cronies, if his sobriety would have taken a different track.

Sanders' mom has an older son going to Cincinnati, so maybe he will join him there. Is that safer?

P.T. concerns.

I live in Rockaway, there's been an uptick in shootings, but it's been decades since Far Rockaway was considered a generally safe neighborhood.  I get it, his mom wants him out of this particular environment.  Would have been nice if she/they came to that conclusion before he committed, but maybe one of the recent shootings hit close to home in a profound way.  Someone asked why his mom wouldn't move the family out of Far Rock if it was so bad.  It doesn't work like that.  Tens of thousands of people in rough neighborhoods in NYC would like to move.  It's a can of worms I won't open, but in short, no, mom (most likely) can't move the family for a variety of reasons.

John Warren, from Far Rockaway High, wasn't a national recruit, and ended up an NBA first round pick.
