Sanders Decommits

I am not talking specifically about Sanders,
but it seems to me that "commitment"(in general)  does not mean what it once did. Certainly every parent/child is entitled to do what's best for them. However, after a long courting period, when a kid commits to a coach and program, barring a life altering event( death of a close family member, etc) he ought to stick to that commitment IMO. For at least a year. That's the way I was raised and that's how I tried to raise my kids(it didn't always work in this "me first" generation). Again, not talking specifically about Sanders, just speaking overall. Just my opinion. To each his own.

College football has an exponentially higher rate of decommitments than college basketball. In fact when a CF recruit "commits" the other schools that are recruiting him usually tell the kid that they are not going to stop recruiting him while in CB basically all recruiting  by other schools ceases after a kid commits. Prefer the CB model but agree with Monte that commitment doesn't mean what it used to in terms of college recruiting of high school athletes. Wish Sanders luck but hoping he doesn't land in BE so there is no chance he comes back to haunt us in an important game.

Lefty Driesell stated that a verbal commitment simply identified who the serious competition was and further pursuit was fine.

Lou knew this very well when going head to head with Lefty for Wayne McCoy and Marco Baldi.

They also went head-to-head for Mike Maloy

I was very happy when Saunders committed to SJU and was not shy to express my views about my excitement.
He was a top 150 player which h as been said multiple times  should be our target group going forward, the best shooter in the City and by all accounts a good local kid. He checked off each and every box.
To say I am disappointed he backed out of his commitment is the absolute truth as he would have provided very good depth the next 2 seasons and in all probability been a good starter as a junior and senior. And that is what good teams do, they don’t recruit from year to year but rather for their needs down the road. Saunders would have been the first such recruit for CMA, a recruit that would have paid large dividends down the road.
Having said that with Posh and Wusu juniors next season, Mathis a 5th year senior , Pinson a sophomore and Storr and king freshman there would be little time available for Saunders next year. So obviously while disappointed with his change of heart his decision Will have little impact On next years team and possibly the following season.
CMA never whines and expresses displeasure or sorrow but rather puts his nose to the grindstone and goes back to work. I would be shocked if coach does not réel in a recruit  of equal or better  talent level than Saunders.

CMA is a next man up type of guy.

Agree with most of what you're saying RN. But 2 points; first, Kolby(a top 400 recruit) and Storr are not even here yet. And who knows if Posh(or anyone else for that matter), will actually be here next year. In all likelihood one or more of the backcourt players will be gone by next year. So it would not necessarily have been a logjam in the backcourt and Sanders would have gotten his fair share of minutes.
2nd, Sanders comes with a rep as a shooter. Maybe the only pure shooter in the backcourt. A good coach will always find ample PT for a good shooter.

What's done is done, and we won't know the impact of his de-commit till down the road, but IMO he would have seen plenty of PT(15 MPg +/-) his freshmen year had he come.

the rankings of recruits are not infallible.

Posh was ranked as the national #300 recruit and Wusu ranked as national #383 recruit.  Both played much better than their ranking.  Likewise Isaiah Moore ranked as the #20 national transfer and he did not live up to his billing.

Regarding “shooters” please recall “shooting guard” Ricky Torres who was ranked national #102 but never lite up the nets  as was hoped.

Otis, my friend, as we all know, none of this(recruiting/projecting)  is an exact science. But Sanders does have a rep as a shooter. We don't often get kids who have reps as "the best shooter in the city". I don't believe that Ricky Torres came with a rep as a shooter, but I could be wrong. It was a while ago. Regardless, he did not live up to expectations. As for Posh, I think he was in the 150 range, not in the 300 range. Excluding Storr, I believe that Posh is the highest ranked CMA recruit. Still think we'll need to do better if we are to be a consistent tourney team. Hopefully Storr is a start.

If he picks the Bonnies, we'll know he really did want to get away from the big city.

Best to move on. My two cents says it is more about no wanting to have to compete for precious minutes than the location of school.

In this day of free transfer this guy was looking like a highly likely candidate. Better not to waste anymore time and energy on him.

Willard learned the slime game from Ricky P….and his father at Pitt wasn’t exactly squeaky clean
