Although no reason was officialy given, and every situation is certianly different, I would not be suprised if decommiting becomes the norm at many of the non-football schools.

The future is uncertian, and it's very clear that we will not be playing against the same level of competition in the future that we are now, even if we stay in the established Big East. Less competition also means less TV exposure. Which means less NBA scouts at games, etc.

Like I said, I don't know the actual reasoning here. It could be something totally different then this as to why Gathers made his decision. I just wouldn't be suprised if all recruits to non-football Big East schools are having second thoughts now.

First of all, I think that tampering with a recruit by LSU is more likely. Second, the TV deal that would be renegotiated will be better than the one the Big East now has which is at a mid-major level. That did not prevent Uconn, Louisville , SJ, Villanova and Cuse from signing top recruits.....nor did it stop Xavier from a top 25 recruiting class.
Finally, if it is LSU behind this, they aren't exactly the Kentucky of the south!

That is encouraging news....Good to hear that St. John's is still his top choice...Whatever those issues are, I really hope they work out so that Gathers can come to St. John's

NYC, MSG, the Big East, this coaching staff and all the opportunities in the future that come along with playing at St. John's have to be incredibly appealing to Gathers and others...I hope it all works out that Gathers can be part of it

“Ricardo is just not 100-percent sure yet where he wants to go,” Byrd added. “St. Johns is still very high on the list. He loves coach Lavin. He just wants to make sure in his gut wherever he goes is 100-percent and not 90-percent.”

At this point, Gathers doesn’t have a new list.

“Right now he’s definitely not going to make a decision until the spring,” Byrd said. “He has decommitted from St. John’s, but they are still way up on his list.”

“He really doesn’t have a list of schools that he’s now targeting,” he added. “He wants to let time past before he signs. The bottom line is he is opening back up, but at the same time he doesn’t want things to get into a frenzy.”

LSU is one school that is certain to try and get involved with Gathers. In fact, Byrd said they have been in the mix for quite some time.

“I think LSU has always been involved, since day one,” he said. “They are here locally and close. Again his release speaks for his self. His release talks about decommiting from St. Johns, but it’s not out of the possibility that he signs with them.”

Both Lavin's health and conference realignment are issues beyond his control. Hopefully he's just looking to see how both work out, and not that LSU or Texas have been providing his inner circle with briefcases and BJs.

I think this kid is going to lead the NCAA in rebounding at some point in his career, so I really would love for him to sign in the spring, but I won't get my hopes up.

I just wish kids today would be honest and decommit before leaks started, and not days and weeks afterward.

probably just a parents decision. It happens.. Hopefully we stay strong with him and he gets here for 2012.

I just have to say that Nate Blue is the man...He has become a real friend of this program and the staff and has done a tremendous job to help get kids to come to St. John's and stay committed here...He had a tweet recently about getting both Garrett and Pelle here and it seems like both with be here...We know how he has helped in the past with Moe Harkless and others...And now he is working with Gathers people to help alleviate any concerns or issues that they have about their kid coming to NYC

Thanks for all the help, Nate Blue! You are the man and we appreciate everything that you've done and continue to do for St. John's

At least one parent would have accompanied him on his visit, right?

I don't get why uncles, etc. would have to be involved in the process. My mom's sister's husband is a hell of a guy, but if he tried to stick his nose in my recruitment I'd tell him to go F himself.

Hope Ricardo looks at the situation carefully and realizes that STJ will be in the NCAA's every year he's here and in the National Championship picture by his sophomore season. Tough to turn that down when you add the NYC spotlight and how STJ's super staff will help kids get to the next level!

I recall some speculation that he was even thinking of enrolling this past September.

I, honestly think we can be in the National Championship picture next season, if everyone stays and the others matriculate (including, a re-commitment of a freshmen Gathers). You hear that, Ricardo! LOL

First post on this new board (I know its not that new).. Anyways, excuse my ignorance, but who is Nate Blue? Is he a recruiter for Lavin? Employed by St Johns?

 RIght now for next year there's the 7 on the team, plus Amir and Norvel plus Darrick and potentially Jamal though I would imagine he might go back to walk on status if the roster was filled. There's a spot available even if Jakarr and Ricardo committed so I don't see how it's going to slow the recruiting down, and both of them committing seems unlikely.
