If he doesn't sign, he will be missing out on the start of something big at SJU. My only question is why would he waste his own time coming to Midnight Madness if he did not want to be here.
Anyway, It will be his loss. Give me more Amir Garrett's. I want guys that 100% want to be here.
If he doesn't sign in the early signing period, I would pull scholarship and give it somebody that wants to be here.
I agree! Which makes me think something fishy could be going on, if there is any truth to this rumor.
I really want Gathers, as he's a beast on the blocks (big, strong, agile and a heckuva rebounder) and seems like a good kid. But, I may side with your thoughts if he doesn't sign this week.
It is kinda weird how our recruiting was white hot and now it's rather cool at this moment. I also wouldn't doubt that it could be attributed to a couple of factors. I, honestly believe it'll pick it up again very soon.
Nothing surprises me in this dog-eat-dog (recruiting) world, LJSA. I'm also even more wary of this situation considering a few schools involved. It could be a Cal/Louie scenario or a Blue Chips situation.
Given the breakdown and uncertainty of the status of the Big East (plus, perhaps, even possible rumors about Lavin's heath -- remember Calipari's supposed comments about Looie's health?), I put nothing past recruiters & boosters putting negative thoughts about St. John's in Gathers' mind. Based solely on the Big East mess (and it is a mess!), I'm not optimistic about where this will lead for a kid who lives in the shadow of LSU ... but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Calhoun is a scumbag. He initiated Norm by stealing Wiggins, who never amounted to anything. Now he's initiating Lavin.
How does that work? The same Calhoun who makes Keith Richards look like a cover photo for Health and Fitness magazine? SJU will get their recruits. And while we are at it, say f*ck off to the football schools and start a hoops only conference. Nobody wants uconn football, so let the basketball program become nomads as well.

It is disapointing that Gathers will not be part of something special. I am just throwing this out there. but could it be possible that it was a mutual parting? could st johns maybe seen something regarding his eligibility and decided that they didn't want a repeat of what happened this year.
Then again maybe he wants to look else where. I too am a firm believer to recruit guys that want to be here. Lavin will get his guys, it seems that recruits are decommiting every day from other schools.

I don't think that's the reason. From what i've heard, Gathers is actually ahead of schedule academically.

I am so not a fan of this verbal agreement in advance. In Gathers case he gave his verbal in July so he was well aware of Lavin's illness and the disarray of the BE Conference, but some kids are getting verbals from recruits of 2013 and 2014. I mean so much can happen over the course of a couple of years and to be honest how many 16-17 year old dont get a change of heart.

This sucks. And despite what we've seen on the court the last two weeks.... we've been taking a beating on the recruiting trail in the last 3 months. I hate to say it, but that's just the fact of the matter. We lost 3 recruits that the staff specifically sent to summer school to gain eligibility... heck, they even had their names on their lockers already.
Then Sampson decommits. I won't say I count KA as a recruiting loss, because it sounds like we did the best we could. But the bottom line is that Lav's recruiting doesn't look nearly as "awesome" as it did a year ago.

Everyone on this board seems certain coach Lav will be able to replace all these lost recruits with top notch talent, and I hope he does,.... but where are they going to come from?
Other thank 7 or 8 guys, ALL of the top 100 recuits for '12 are spoken for. And who are we still involved with ? Opeka? Sounds that way, yes. But he doesn't seem to have the tools or upside that Gathers does. And after that we aren't being mentioned or even listed by any of the other recuits in the top 100? Amile? I guess, but it's been awhile since we heard anything from him.
With the 3 guys not being eligible, losing KA, and the Big East's future being in doubt... Coach REALLY needed to have a solid 2012 class to keep the momentum building. Now, that seems very much in doubt.
I'm not panicking. And I know there's alot of good basketball ahead for us. But there's been a string of bad news for months now and it's certainly NOT REASSURING to SJU fans

Maybe we should have recruited Dingle? Not the talent that Gathers is, but could be a solid 4 year player. Feel like we may look back on it in a few years and see him do well at Temple, and may regret not pursuing him.
