Ricardo Gathers, PF - BAYLOR

Doesn't anyone stick to their words?? I know lavin will get the players we need, and all these punks that don't stick to their word will miss out on the magic that is gunna happen. I want the amirs who do what ever it takes to wear the red and white, and he had 1,250,000 reasons not to. Good riddance to all these other p punks...i don't care how old they are, your word is your bond, and obviously it means nothing for a handful of them. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out ricardo

To blame his decommitment on illegal recruiting is unfair. He left thats his choice and were going to move on. We have a core group of guys who want to be here & others who are going to want to be here. If his reasoning is being that the big east future is an unknown or that Lavin is not healthy then he has some people in his circle that are not well informed. His loss at a chance to miss being part of something special

Everyone on this board seems certain coach Lav will be able to replace all these lost recruits with top notch talent, and I hope he does,.... but where are they going to come from?

Other thank 7 or 8 guys, ALL of the top 100 recuits for '12 are spoken for. And who are we still involved with ? Opeka? Sounds that way, yes. But he doesn't seem to have the tools or upside that Gathers does. And after that we aren't being mentioned or even listed by any of the other recuits in the top 100? Amile? I guess, but it's been awhile since we heard anything from him.

With the 3 guys not being eligible, losing KA, and the Big East's future being in doubt... Coach REALLY needed to have a solid 2012 class to keep the momentum building. Now, that seems very much in doubt.

I'm not panicking. And I know there's alot of good basketball ahead for us. But there's been a string of bad news for months now and it's certainly NOT REASSURING to SJU fans

Season is just starting players always emerge. Dom Pointer wasn't considered a top 100 player and shot up into the 20's. This staff knows what they are doing and are going to continue to get great players. We may not know who they are yet but I guarantee you there are players who would love to come to St. Johns

That's a good point. And the list of guys outside the top 100 who end up making great collegiate (and pro) careers for themselves is long and distinguished. Today's just a frustrating day. But I think you're right the staff will find pieces to fill out the team. It's just nerve-racking when we thought we knew what some of those pieces were...

now they're unknowns

Very disappointed as are many people on this board and rightly so. But, I have faith in Lavin and his staff. We have Darrick Wood coming in and he seems to be moving up the charts as far as his recruiting rank. Look who Lavin pulled out of Junior College last year, GG and Lindsey. He may go the JC route again. I'm sure that there are many BE caliber players in JC right now. We have our 4 year core anyway. We need Pelle and Amir in December and then guys who can fill roles. Amir, Pelle according to nate Blue are still working Jakarr Sampson hard so hopefully that ends up positively. Lavin will not be shut out though. The BE and Lavin's illness is enough for all the street scoundrels in the recruiting game to put doubts in these kids ears. That will all shake out though and it looks as if its all going in the right direction. I still think that in the end Pitino gets what he wants from Marinatto basketball wise and Memphis and Temple come into the league. This is temporary setback. We all have to remember one thing. In the end, Lavin and his staff put kids in the NBA. They have a track record back his UCLA days and kids know that. Just my humble opinion.

We still havent read any thing from Gathers as to why he decommitted. He may just want to wait and see how the BE plays out, he still may be interested in us come spring. If not we move on. one player does not make a team. Lavin will find the pieces to go along with the team we have today. Putting an entire program together takes time, and it wil get done sooner then later.

The young man decided to break his commitment to us. That is his choice. Lav. will replace him with recruits that will continue to to help us build a national power. Coach Lavin will do that with people that he thinks will add to what he is building.........I think Gathers loses more than St. John's does. We will get our recruits.

Is it just me, or does Johnny Jungle now shut down every time there's bad news about a recruit?

edit: scratch that. Looks like it shut down while they switched it from committed to uncommited.

LOL It's up, LJSA. Actually, there have been ongoing issues on JJ for the past week.

I was starting to think Dave didn't trust us to act like civil adults.

OK, back to that lying scumbag Gathers.

Maybe we should have recruited Dingle? Not the talent that Gathers is, but could be a solid 4 year player. Feel like we may look back on it in a few years and see him do well at Temple, and may regret not pursuing him.

Or Kamari Murphy.

It is my secret hope that Harkless has been in his ear.

I'm not that concerned right now. If this was the spring and they only had seven on scholarship, then being in scramble mode would be bad...BUT

They have seven schollies on the roster. Wood would make eight. I have no doubt that Garrett will be here either at the semester or next season. That's nine. If Pelle sticks that's 10.

Even if they basically know they have nine set for next year by the time the spring period starts and Gathers goes elswhere, grab a frosh and a top JUCO guy and that's 11 scholarships covered, potentially 12 with Pelle.

Nothing wrong with that.

Per ZagsBlog, Gathers decommitted from St. John's last night. The only player still committed for next year is Wood now.

I don't think its right of you to call an 18 year old kid a "punk," just because he de-committed. However, I do sort of understand your point. After all, he is probably the first teenager in history to ever change his mind on something.

Does it suck that he de-committed? Yes. But don't sit there a knock a kid (one that you probably have never met before in your life) just because he did something that you didn't approve of. It's his life, not yours, so get over it.

And if you read the one article he said that he was still considering St. Johns. Is the probability good that he will end up re-committing to us? Who really knows.......but him reading or hearing about our forum where the school's fans are calling him a punk certainly won't help our chances...

I agree with this post, jumbo. I don't think that is the way to go about things. Many of us do not like the situation, but that isn't the way to handle it.

Actually, Gathers seems like a good kid from what I've witnessed. Could he have some folks in his ear? Probably. But, I don't feel it should resort to calling him a "punk."

i was a little ticked when i wrote that, however I wasnt calling him a "punk" per se....just that type of action to me is punk behavior. I'm a man of my word, even if it bites me in the @ss sometimes, so i do get frustrated when people give their word, than rescind on it. he could be a great wonderful kid for all i know, i just dont like the action....thats what i was referring to. and i doubt me calling him a "punk" would really sway his decision in any way shape or form...i think im powerful, but not that powerful ;)

I stopped worrying a long time ago about what 18 and 19 year old kids say and do with regard to where they will be playing basketball. All you can do is have a university committed to the program, a coach who knows the game and how to put together a staff and a team, and just let them do their thing. The rest is out of anyone's control.
