(POST GAME) (H of F) Vermont, Sat. Nov. 16, 4p, FS-2, 570 WMCA
Last year's Greg Williams would have exploded to the hoop for a dunk and one in a second half play where we failed to score. Feels like he is truly not yet himself. Maybe that's my back injury talking.
He looks really tentative on both ends. For a guy who is as athletic as he is we haven't seen it. Could be nagging injury. But I am confirmed in what I said repeatedly before the season, he is not a PG option. He doesn't have PG instincts /confidence. If/when he's at full strength I'd like to see him playing over the top and less at the top of the perimeter unless maybe they are setting him up for a give and go or maybe coming off the weak side for a lob but seems to me he is not being played to advantage as now third option pg / combo guard. Where I think he could really shine is picking up his defense becoming a high rebound guard and helping the team get into transition. I think that is his best game and it could really work with CMA but when the defense isn't creating the transition he and this team are going to stagnate.
To enjoy this season, it's best not too get too hung up on the team's record. It's still a rebuilding year, even with Heron and LJ. Unlike our previous staff, I do trust the process this time, because there is one.
As for Roberts, he is still green and lacking post moves. But imagine how much further along he would be if given more PT last year. Champagnie is very poised for a freshman and should end up being very good.
A good perspective to take this season. Not an easy one though.

I was disappointed for them that they didn't steal that one yesterday, but had a bad feeling that guy from Vermont was not missing that last shot. I see a hard working team, well drilled and battling. No need to look back.

Huge game changer was Williams fumbling the ball while they had numbers, inexcusable, total momentum killer!

Loving the new coach, just have issue with him having all five bench players in together for a decent chunk of the first half. He kinda got away with it, but it's not a good look.

Thought the officiating was horrible, ticky tack fouls being called while near tackles were let go. Also, when you jump straight up and never contact the player in front of you, it's not an over-the-back foul.

How annoying was Lamb taking his sweet time picking up the ball to inbound it? Can't believe they let him do that.

Trending up: Roberts, Earlington, Champagnie
Trending down: Rutherford, Williams, Sears
Still want to give Williams a bit more in non-conf to prove if he's got it or not. I do agree that back injury has little to do with his dribbling and passing. Would like to see him be more aggressive on both ends.

I was big on LJ's ability to consistently make those floaters, but he's getting more ambitious with how and where he takes them from. Need to get that under control.

I wasn't expecting much from Caraher, but it's surprising that he's not getting any minutes, especially when we were down and nothing seemed to be working.
If you don't think your back has any affect on the way the rest of your body moves, then I don't know what to tell you. Just being able to bend to keep your dribble low is greatly affected by your back. Let's give Williams some time before we toss him out.

Caraher needs to get more time. Especially, when we are struggling to score. The kid can shoot and rebound.

It's safe to say that we didn't play our best game today. That is going to happen with a new coach and system, especially early in the season.

Now, if the poor shooting, missed free throws, and turnovers turn into more of a trend rather than a fluke, then it will be time to be worried. But I am not flipping out or over-reacting after one game against a quality opponent.
Let's not confuse Vermont with Virginia, Duke or Michigan State. The team stunk out the joint. I'm sure we'll turn it around against the low to mid majors on the schedule...but I saw nothing that tells me we can compete against the big boys.
And why would anyone expect that we could compete with the big boys? We have been a mediocre program with one lousy coach after another for decades. Even some of the teams that have had a modicum of success in that time have had issues. Yes, the team had a lousy game but they kept fighting and that is more than I can say about a lot of the crap we have seen through the years. Sorry but we are back to baby steps. I want to have a team and coaches I can really root for because of something other than the logo on the uniform first and I will judge Anderson and co. by what they do, not with the bitterness left by the failure of the 6 preceding coaches. And I’ll save the competing with the big boys 6 months after starting ANOTHER rebuild for movies and fairy tales.
Well, what are we doing in a big boy conference charging big boy prices? Face it, the team with the best player usually finds a way to win. Vermont had its all-american. Our best guy missed two free throws down the stretch. Baby steps, again. We seem to be bringing in "nice" players...but there isn't a McDonald's AA among them. Lavin, at least, brought studs here...studs who are competing for NBA jobs.

I'm not ready to give Anderson an F...but by the time we get to the conference, I hope he has a C+. In other words, more mediocrity from a team that has been mediocre (barring the Jarvis years) since the mid 80s.
Anderson inherited this team and roster. Guy needs to be able to build his own team as well. We were ranked second to last entering this season into the Big East which is no fault of Anderson. To expect he comes in and turns a roster with a ton of former bench players into a big east monster is kind of absurd.
Newsman still hasn't gotten over the Lavin firing.;) His expectations should be tempered: this is going to be a losing season, not quite on a par with Mullin's first year but we'll be lucky to win 4 BE games. And I'm OK with that because this is going to be a 3 year process before we start to get back on track. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking we're going to bring in top 20-30 players, we've had a long recent history of mediocrity at best, nobody with that ranking is going to want to come here, at least not until we start to produce on the court.

I'm not giving Anderson any grade for this year, he's recruited 4 serviceable players for next year. He needs time to get his kind of guys in here to make his system work.

Dear Ken,
Th first three you listed are all greatly exceeding expectations. As for the second group Rutherford was a low Division 1 pg. no more no less who signed with us when we had no pg for this season. Now he is being asked to play at a much higher level. Whatever he gives us great, that is all I can say, I was never expecting a BE player. Sears too was not a high ranked juco and is coming off an injury. I am hoping to get 15 minutes a game from him and will be satisfied. As for Williams who is just a great kid and athlete I will give him far more than 2 games after he is injury free before I judge his ability. I am convinced he will contribute at this level.
Williams healthy tends towards being a mini-SirDom
That may be a big stretch at this point. Sir Dom was a killer with a real killer instinct. He really got after it. Greg is at stage 1. He’s got leaping ability, but I haven’t seen enough else. I’m hoping he’s just shaking off rust after an injury and comes along more. I haven’t seen any Sir’Dom in him yet.

For the second consecutiv game each of those kids almost had a double double. They are anything but The reason for our loss. If anything their inside play is a reason we were in the game to begin with when the 3 players we were counting on offensively shot 11 for 36. I am shocked at your expectations for these two players as they have certainly surpassed the modest expectations I had for each of them
Those 2 are exceeding expectations as “pieces”...it’s the “centerpieces” (Heron, Figueroa) that did not perform up to expectation yesterday. While they should take a majority of the shots, they still need to be good shots. Too many forced shots and overall inability to create shots off the dribble. Must have scoring distribution from 2 to 22 feet.

Agree with most of your post Section 9. It I think we win more than 4 Big East games this year. Other than Seton Hall I haven’t seen anything special out of any of the other Big East teams so far out of conference. DePaul had a big win but other than that? Marquette just got pasted by Wisconsin. I think other than Seton Hall, every other Big East team is trying to find themselves right now. I think many of the Big East teams, including us, will get much better as the season goes on and won’t be the same teams come February/March. That being said, I think we finish 10-3 or 9-4 out of conference and probably 7-11 in conference and finish 17-14 or 16-15. CMA continues his streak of winning seasons.

I agree, those 2 are exceeding expectations.
I guess when I see them playing so well in one half, I just wonder why they can't do it the whole game. Unless cma is planning Roberts has the 1st half and Champ has the 2nd.
That's why i'm very interested to see how Wednesday's game plays out.

If it's the same then I'll be convinced that's cma game plan. Maybe they aren't ready to go full throttle for both halfs? Just guessing.

I thought this could be double digit win by at least 10 points had Heron and Figueroa played at the top of their game.
Heron is continuing a trend that started at the end of last season by forcing shots inside against much taller players inside of playing at the two guard position. Figueroa was overusing the floater. Dunn had a good game except for his outside shooting. He needs to start to who to distribute the ball too in the offensive sets. As I have warned in the past, he is an average shooter at best. As Dink pointed out we do not have a pure point guard on this team so directing the offense is going to be a challenge. This is where the speedy Mcgriff is missed. Sears and Williams are both physically mature players but both came off injuries. Unfortunately sometimes players never get back to 100 percent mentally. In Sears case he just is not talented enough. With Posh, Wusu and Moore coming on board with better skillsets, both will make themselves expendable if they are not serviceable by Big East games.
The coaching has been fine but the execution has been poor mostly due to the lack of a skilled playmaker.
Vermont had a crafty 6'5 guard and a player 6'6, 240 who was better than Heron and Figueroa. Champagnie, Roberts and Earlington were better than any players on the Vermont bench. Overall we had more talent that just didn't play up to expectations.
I firmly believe that once Steere joins the team that this will be a completely different team with more options than Williams and Sears. That is why we shouldn't compare this team, as untalented as they may seem to any of Mullin's first three years where we lacked coaching.

I agree with your assessments 72. Also , lack of coaching has killed us in couple of seasons where we should have been much more successful with the taken we had. Lavin’s second to last season when he Jakarr Sampson and Orlando Sanchez. That team had a lot of talent. Lost that last game to Providence which kept us out of the NCAA’s but it should have never had come to that. Losing Dunlap hurt us. Then last years team could have been much much better with quality coaching.

The key word is "serviceable". We're picking up "serviceable players while the top 50 competition is stocking up with studs. So you say we have another three year plan. We're like the Russians or the Chinese with their economic "five year plans" back in the day that was just a ruse to keep the rubes looking far into the future. Wake up call: There is no three year plan.. We're committed to picking up "serviceable" players who'll keep the dogs away until the next coup.
Coach has brought in McGriff...who disappeared...Sears...who needs plenty of work...Dunn who needs plenty of work, but not as much... and Champaignie who's pretty good. No one expects any of these players to greatly turn around our fortunes...but they're Anderson's players. I don't know who's responsible for Heron's regression. Can't blame Mullin anymore.

As far as pining for Lavin...he was an outstanding representative of the school and he brought in top talent. I was sorry to see him go. I was glad to see who was chosen as his replacement...as Mullin was also an outstanding representative of the school. I see Anderson also representing us well. We haven't had a proven winner since Frank McGuire...and most posters' parents weren't born yet during his tenure. I had posted before that we should move to a mid-major conference where we belong...but now we can't even beat America East teams. OK, we eked out a win at home against number nine New Hampshire.

I'm not ready to give up on Williams by any means, but if his back is hurting him to the degree that it is impacting his game, then he shouldn't be on the floor. He's not Fig or Heron.
