Just shared this with my SJU text group. CMA does not have to be a brilliant coaching mind to win here. IMO Louie wasn't, and he did pretty damn well here. If CMA consistently brings in good talent, gets them to play hard and has a good enough game plan, like Louie he will win here. He's done it at every other stop, no reason to believe he won't do it here. Logen I hope you're reading this post :)
Just a couple of points. The game has changed entirely since Louie so while I get the comparison it's like trying to compare a Commodore 64 to Watson. Now you win two ways, bringing in great talent and rolling out the balls (see Lavin, Mullin, Jarvis) or bringing in good talent and coaching extremely well. The latter seems to be CMA's MO. Agree it's worked to some level at every stop but it's not the preferred method for many fans looking for instant gratification that meets their expectations rather than realistic expectations.
When I said he will win here like Lou, I didn't actually mean that he would win at the same level as Lou did. We are not getting the Mullins, Berrys, Sealys, etc to come here. And if we occasionally luck out with a kid, it will be for 1 year and then the kid will be gone. I meant he would win consistently like Lou did. I think a fair expectation is that we are a top 25-50 team most years. That's pretty much what CMA's teams did his last 3 stops, so I think its reasonable to expect he'll do that here. Time will tell.

And if he delivers a NC like Carmelo did for Syracuse, I'll be forever greatful to the kid.

to 25-50? That's it? Why not more like Villanova, Xavier, shu, a top 25 team most years. Just hoping that we can be more then just avg under cma. Would be great to be a top 5 B.E. team most years, instead of the bottom 5.
I want sju to matter again, not just 1 bs ncaa appearance every 4 year.
I got a feeling the cma will have cma more then just 25-50 most years

I want everything that you want, and then some. But based on where our program has been, and based on CMA's track record of having teams finish the year in the top 25(3 times), that's what I expect.

Well then I'll just pray that his best years are at SJU, hey if people here think that top 25-50 is good enough then that's your right, there's no right or wrong. To me I see Xavier in the top 25 most years, so why can't SJU be top 25 most years? And, maybe one year, 2 or 3 4* players will become clutch and real hard to beat with real good role players surrounding them, and win a championship with cma at the helm.
It took Wright 15 years? Maybe cma will win one in 10-12years, if he stays that long?

Re the Carmelo thing, yeah that would be great but Syracuse was a very good to great team year in and out back then so he didn't do it ALL by himself. Still need to have a consistent program built to set the stage of course.

Re expectations I would say leave Nova out of it for a while. Nova is what is is because of Wright. While we all hope STJ has it's own JW at some point it's not useful to think about that now.

My expectations would be to be top 4 in the BE 75% of the seasons, dance each of those top 4 years and with at least one win in the tourney 2/3 of the time. I think that's more than Monte mentioned but less than you. I think that's aggressive but not unrealistic. If they get there then you move the bar (well besides the tourney wins, they've been few and far between for anyone but Nova and X). I think that's about what you get from most of the other BE achievers at this point as well. Not quite up to the Matta/Miller/Mack Xavier standards. Maybe hiring a coach whose name starts in M is a start but I guess STJ already tried that. ;)

Should of won this game because we were at home. That being said, regardless of conference affiliation, Vermont is a likely top 50 team this year. Not only that they had the best player on the floor who is a likely 2nd round pick this year in what's looking like a weak draft class. This should be just a mild disappointment because it was a home game, they were the favorite and rightfully so. Our season is far from over and a .500 conference record is still very much a possibility. We still have one more piece who has yet to play. This team will improve the more games they get under their belts. I expect a much better product by the middle of conference play.

Call me crazy but Vermont didn't impress me. I guess turning it into a dogfight is what they want and have done all year so far. They don't shoot well. Granted Lamb was mehhhh in the 1st half but sensational in the 2nd half. Hey I'm happy they are receiving votes and I hope they do well the rest of the year but I can't see how that will sustain all year.

I tend to agree with you. There are a lot of reasons we should hsve won that game but it comes down to terrible shooting from the floor and the foul line.lets face it if we do not improve and have many games like this we will at the end be where the pundits have placed us last

I know most will laugh at this, but I think we could be a top 5 B.E. this year. Steere will be back in a month, and many said he's the best big on the team. Roberts & Champ is avg 10, 7, if they made noise in halfs then 14, 10?
LJ, and Heron gotta lead us better, Dunn will get better. If all the bench players keep improving then we'll definitely have a team that is tough as nails to beat by February

Just my belief anyway.

I never said it’s good enough for me. I don’t base my projections on what is good enough for me, I base it on what I expect. I said from the beginning that my expectation is that CMA will do here pretty much what he did elsewhere. I hope he does a lot better in terms of top 25 and NCAA appearances, but for now that’s what I am expecting. I hope you’re right and he finishes his career here on a very high note. That’s what I’m hoping for too, but that’s not what I’m expecting.

They should have hired Pitino
But what upsets me the most is that UConn will be in the big east next yr and Hurley is going to get the recruits because this program has gone nowhere since the split

There he is. 2 months later the broken record re-appears.

I think CMA has the potential to recruit better here than he did at Arkansas. Key word is potential. It remains to be seen if he can keep up with the other programs let alone surpass them (Big East programs) in terms of recruiting. So far he has added some pieces out of necessity that were lower level recruits. We will see soon enough if he can get regular recruiting classes of a few 4 stars and a few 3 stars. Transfers are okay as long as we do not rely on them which has been the case and given us fits regarding eligibility. They also often can't play right away e.g. Steere. Give me a 75% 3-4 star HS recruits, 25% transfers to plug final few holes including a few real big men and I can see us being at least like a PC...competitive maybe won't blow people away but a solid program with a few top 25 years sprinkled in every so often. Would be so rewarding to see a number next to our name on a regular basis. Huge for recruiting and fan morale/casual fans.

Sometimes someone needs to be realistic. I've been dreaming now for some 20 yrs hoping this program would be revived. How long can you say "wait till next year"

Maybe when you use the quote function properly your wish of SJU's revival will come true?

After seeing the work in recruiting, practice, and public relations by CMA and staff, I'm all in for this staff and their efforts.
Go Johnnies!

Personally I was not surprised we lost to Vermont. Regardless of the overall competition that they play, they were still 83-19 the last three seasons and have won more than twenty games for eleven consecutive seasons. Additionally, they are a very experienced team, very well coached and have the savvy to win close games. Lastly, they have the reigning conference player of the year, Anthony Lamb, returning as a senior and he has played in more NCAA tournament games than anyone on our roster. This was a significant upgrade in competition for us from Mercer, Central Connecticut State or New Hampshire. I definitely thought we could win going in, but the result was certainly not surprising given our opponent.

That all said I have not seen anything out on the court that would make me unhopeful about Coach Anderson's tenure. The team's ultimate ascendancy will be an exercise in fan patience. The team will not immediately burst into the top ten and dominate the Big East. There will be struggles ahead, but hopefully the culture of playing hard, playing smart and representing the University with dignity will be instilled.

As for Vermont perhaps we might gain some perspective on our defeat when they play at the defending national champion Virginia Cavaliers tonight. For the record Vermont is a 14 1/2 point underdog.
