(POST GAME) (H of F) Vermont, Sat. Nov. 16, 4p, FS-2, 570 WMCA
For 2nd consecutive roberts and champ had the same game.

Roberts made noise in the 1st half, and not much in the 2nd.
Didn't hear a peep from champ in the 1st half (2pnts, 2boards), in the 2nd half he wokeup.
Need complete games from them.
Now don't kill me for this, just an observation.
Hope it doesn't continue vs columbia.
For the second consecutiv game each of those kids almost had a double double. They are anything but The reason for our loss. If anything their inside play is a reason we were in the game to begin with when the 3 players we were counting on offensively shot 11 for 36. I am shocked at your expectations for these two players as they have certainly surpassed the modest expectations I had for each of them

We shot 34.5% from the field, 26.3% from three, missed 12 free throw's, had 16 TO's and only lost by two.

It's safe to say that we didn't play our best game today. That is going to happen with a new coach and system, especially early in the season.

Now, if the poor shooting, missed free throws, and turnovers turn into more of a trend rather than a fluke, then it will be time to be worried. But I am not flipping out or over-reacting after one game against a quality opponent.
Let's not confuse Vermont with Virginia, Duke or Michigan State. The team stunk out the joint. I'm sure we'll turn it around against the low to mid majors on the schedule...but I saw nothing that tells me we can compete against the big boys.
And why would anyone expect that we could compete with the big boys? We have been a mediocre program with one lousy coach after another for decades. Even some of the teams that have had a modicum of success in that time have had issues. Yes, the team had a lousy game but they kept fighting and that is more than I can say about a lot of the crap we have seen through the years. Sorry but we are back to baby steps. I want to have a team and coaches I can really root for because of something other than the logo on the uniform first and I will judge Anderson and co. by what they do, not with the bitterness left by the failure of the 6 preceding coaches. And I’ll save the competing with the big boys 6 months after starting ANOTHER rebuild for movies and fairy tales.

Great atmosphere yesterday My kids enjoyed it more than the blowouts
but that will only continue if we win some of these tougher games

Free throws free throws free throws ! Ugh Need more out of Heron

I'm hoping for a split next weekend going to Mohegan for the first time

I'm also hoping for a split, but that we get there by beating Arizona State in our first game. Would be a very nice win but is doable. I expect the team to bounce back strongly against Columbia and be primed for a big game against Arizona State. Dunn will have had another game to acclimate himself. I'm not worried about Heron. He'll snap out of his mini-slump.

I agree, but what do you mean by “another rebuild”?

No one is confusing them with Virginia, Duke, or Michigan State. Few programs in the country are consistently up there with those teams.

However, Vermont is still a very, very good team. Their record the past three years have been 29-6, 27-8, and 27-7. Their coaches career record is 197-84. So let's not pretend that they are your typical 'mid-major'.

If your expectation is that we should just automatically beat Vermont because of what the names on the front of the jerseys , then you obviously have not been paying attention the last 10+years.

Like you said, we stunk right from the beginning. My point is that for as poorly as we played, we only lost by two. The big picture is whether or not the poor play was a fluke or if it will be a continuing trend. And you cannot make that determination after one game against a quality opponent.

To enjoy this season, it's best not too get too hung up on the team's record. It's still a rebuilding year, even with Heron and LJ. Unlike our previous staff, I do trust the process this time, because there is one.
As for Roberts, he is still green and lacking post moves. But imagine how much further along he would be if given more PT last year. Champagnie is very poised for a freshman and should end up being very good.

I agree, they are anything but reason we lost. I like them alot, as you both almost had a double-double with really a half from each.
Imagine if they made noise in both, we win.

Yes, I'm never satisfied unless we win, always gotta push for more
I'm always beating myself up if I'm not good enough and we lose when I used play even if i had a good game. I'd say what extra could i have done.

- I was there last night and let me say, kudos to SJU fans for coming out to support the team. The atmosphere in the building was amazing. Wish it would be like that vs every team.
- Nothing pisses me off more, NOTHING, than missing free throws. And us missing FTs at that clip is simply inexcusable. Mike Anderson better have everyone shooting 1000 free throws a piece every day this week.
- Everyone knew Lamb was getting the ball at the end there, not doubling him was criminal, but the defense on him for the shot was not that bad, he just made a good shot. Good players make those shots in those moments.
- Liked what I saw from Rasheem, he's got some onions and moxy.
- Roberts has been a delight.
- The Greg Williams experiment is over. Sorry. I know tons of fans here and on twitter are dying for him to become a legit contributor but it's not going to happen, he doesn't have the skills. Stop making excuses about the injury. That injury has nothing to do with him turning the ball over left and right when bringing the ball up the floor. He isn't the guy.
- Mustapha needs to show up in these games, he hit the 3 at the end there to bring it close but he's been M.I.A. for 2 games now.
- LJ with that floater...c'mon
- All that being said, the loss hurts a ton, but the effort at the end was noticeable. I think we lose that game by double digits last year. I trust Anderson. On to Columbia, please win by 40

I agree that Vermont is not Duke, Virginia, et. al., but let's wait until they actually play Virginia on Tuesday night where they will be a heavy underdog. It will be an interesting game that could end up with a score in the 50's.

Well, what are we doing in a big boy conference charging big boy prices? Face it, the team with the best player usually finds a way to win. Vermont had its all-american. Our best guy missed two free throws down the stretch. Baby steps, again. We seem to be bringing in "nice" players...but there isn't a McDonald's AA among them. Lavin, at least, brought studs here...studs who are competing for NBA jobs.

I'm not ready to give Anderson an F...but by the time we get to the conference, I hope he has a C+. In other words, more mediocrity from a team that has been mediocre (barring the Jarvis years) since the mid 80s.

Still want to give Williams a bit more in non-conf to prove if he's got it or not. I do agree that back injury has little to do with his dribbling and passing. Would like to see him be more aggressive on both ends.

I was big on LJ's ability to consistently make those floaters, but he's getting more ambitious with how and where he takes them from. Need to get that under control.

I wasn't expecting much from Caraher, but it's surprising that he's not getting any minutes, especially when we were down and nothing seemed to be working.

Vermont didn’t beat us, we beat ourselves. Figgy and Heron had subpar performances. Vermont played bad the first half, but we also played bad. We missed our free throws. We also were inefficient. Onto Columbia and hope to see Heron break out of his funk.

In MHO, the problem is we have no inside game. Vermont was guarding the perimeter and unfortunately, except for Dunn, we don't have guards that are quick enough to get past their defenders..........and the sad part, it's only Vermont. The Big East teams are going to seize on this. Until we get an effective inside presence, we're going to have to out hustle and out shoot our opponents. High bar to set for this squad.

Last year's Greg Williams would have exploded to the hoop for a dunk and one in a second half play where we failed to score. Feels like he is truly not yet himself. Maybe that's my back injury talking.

Anderson inherited this team and roster. Guy needs to be able to build his own team as well. We were ranked second to last entering this season into the Big East which is no fault of Anderson. To expect he comes in and turns a roster with a ton of former bench players into a big east monster is kind of absurd.

Hopefully Steer is that inside presense, and yeah it will take time for him to get used to playing at this level, but hopefully with two ooc games, then 9 B.E. games in January, hopefully by February they'll all clicking.
