(POST-GAME) Butler, Tues. Feb. 12, 8:30pm, CBS SN / 970AM

Really thought this should have been an easy win. Our shot selection and decision making in the 2nd half were horrendous. We did it to ourselves. Ponds did not seem interested either. I could not explain why he didn't have the ball in his hand every possession at the end of regulation and overtime.
It was significant that Heron shot 10 free throws v average of four last night. It seems he seldom got calls on bumps in lane in previous games & would be nice to see him get benefit of doubt more often. Of course each game differs, but his FTs really impacted game.
was talking about that with a friend the other day. It always seems like he should be getting another 4 ft's a game at minimum

The Jordan drive, stop, step back jumper, would really help Heron's game.
Then defenders couldn't just stand in the lane, waiting for a charge.

Ponds was getting doubled team every time he got ball. Nobody fears Simon's shot making ability and rightfully so. Lappas was spot on with his analysis.

Refs gave us a break when Ponds punked them by leaving the ball at mid-court. They could have easily given him a technical which could have cost us the game.

If you watch highlights of game there are so many possessions where ball handler for us is only Red Storm player in paint, nobody even close! We are never in position to rebound on offense and one must assume when you see this repeatedly that coach WANTS all his players on perimeter and not in the paint! Very strange strategy. So Figgy when he follows shots is probably out of position in coaches mind, haha!

Yeah and they could have changed Heron's slapping backboard from One technical shot to two....... Oh wait

I had a great time at an exciting game last night. From what I could see over 5,000 people around me were sharing that experience. Of course, there were issues, this being a game played and coached by human beings. To show that I have a critical side, how can Mullin let an eleven point lead shrink to two before calling a timeout? And yes, why is it so important that all our players run away from the ball every time we take a shot?

But in the end the team I root for won, and there were some true highlight plays in Overtime.

- Ponds three point play

- Figueroa's fantastic steal and pass to Simon

- Heron's clutch foul shooting

Butler might not be Duke, but I've got some bad news for you, SJU is not North Carolina. SJU beat a solid Big East team in an exciting game. Sorry for raining on the daily piss parade here but I enjoyed the game and I'm looking forward to Sunday.

I believe that referees have made a concerted effort NOT to call fouls benefitting us on offense , especially re Heron and Ponds, maybe because of Mullins constant arguing, although last nite seemed better for Heron at least.

Also, with lack of offensive rebounding, if we don’t shoot and defend extremely well, we don’t win, period!
This team gets killed on the boards because we have no one in position to rebound. I hate the sight of shoot-and-retreat with 4-5 opponents in position to rebound, while our guys backpedal on defense. Crash the boards, damn it.
The strange thing is we do it every game even against opponents where they even acknowledge that they do not want to get in a running game with St. J's, so if they want a slower paced half court game would it kill us to send 1-2 guys to the offensive boards? Last night was an example although I must say outside of Figgy and maybe Simon we don't really have guys that appear could do a good job offensive rebounding. You would think Clark but that would necessitate him actually going after the ball off the board (like Clark for other things but he is just not an aggressive rebounder).

the tv stat of the night-
2017/2018 SJU last in bench points
2018/2019 SJU 8 from the ncaa bottom in bench points

Clark is a good rebounder when he wants to be , all about positioning and effort. Most of time he’s not in a good position

So then he is not a good rebounder.

It's crazy too because we have a guy like Figueroa who is very adept in grabbing offensive rebounds. I wish they would unleash him more.
Recruits and handlers and others must be like: "He's a hof player and he tells his players not to rebound???
A kid should know you gotta go for off rebounds, to try and get 2nd chance points. Imagine mullin telling Steer not to go for off rebounds? Steer won't say anything but he'll look at Chris like wtf?
The problem is that Mullin, the Clark Kent of the team, has been letting Jimmy Olsen coach the team. Jimmy is not a hof anything and is making it up as he goes. Clark just follows along because he has never coached the "modern game" of college basketball. He's an NBA guy using NBA sets with high school age kids. The picture is disturbing and the urgency to hire an editor at the Daily Planet has been magnified in this 4th year of poorly edited melodramas.
If Mullin stays Mitch or Greg have to go.
(1) You are Lex Luthor in that analogy.
(2) Horrible analogy
(3) St. Jean will be a head coach at a high major by 32.
(4) Try using analogies that don’t include the names of current players...the Clark bit was Clumsy
(5) Cheer up grumpy bear
#3 has been bookmarked
I take it by 32 you mean 2032.

Game would not have gone into overtime if Mullin did not get a technical foul. We needed those two points at the end and we would have won. Mullin definitely needs a muzzle to quiet him. Ponds would not have had the pressure of hitting two free throws with what looked to be an injured arm.

the tech was not on mullin but on heron for excessive celebration after a dunk

Heron balled out last night
We needed every bit of it to salvage the "W"
Wasn't pretty but on the correct side of the ledger
On to the Nova rematch - a "W" on Sunday should seal the deal for us!!!

Our new mantra should be: Win ugly/just win.
Or as Mike Vaccaro wisely puts it: “Survive and Advance.”
That may be a tough template for us diehard fans, but hey—if we prove to be Valvano’s ‘83 team or Rollie’s ‘85 team who were heart attack kids but took it all home—we’d be happy campers...if we survived the ordeal!
Lol.
