This team gets killed on the boards because we have no one in position to rebound. I hate the sight of shoot-and-retreat with 4-5 opponents in position to rebound, while our guys backpedal on defense. Crash the boards, damn it.
It's crazy too because we have a guy like Figueroa who is very adept in grabbing offensive rebounds. I wish they would unleash him more.
Least satisfying STJ win I can remember. After early lead rest of the game was what can they do that's predictable and wrong to possibly lose...oh that.
You must have a very short term memory. How about our close wins this year against Bowling Green, Cal, and Georgia Tech? Cal is 5-18 this year, and 0-11 in the PAC-12!!!! We only beat them by 3. Bowling Green turned out better than anyone expected, but at the time I don't remember anyone being happy we only beat them by 4. It looked like a sure loss to Georgia Tech, who is now 11-13, until Ponds turned superhuman and we won by 3.
Definitely been getting killed on boards past several games and teams are realizing that the way to beat us is out-rebounding us and pounding the paint. It almost worked again. Thank god for the huge turnover disparity. Being close enough to hear the refs, it's clear they are not fans of Mullin...at least during games. Several times the refs told him "enough, back up!" or "that's it!". Did notice one huge over the back no call where a Butler player jumped from behind Simon but they called the foul on us...they reviewed it and didn't change anything which was ridiculous. Several times I saw us chuck 3's and literally run back with the ball in the air still. This is why we will keep seeing 10-1 or 11-3 offensive rebound disparities. Butler had tons and it's what kept them in the game. They don't have athletes for the most part, but they have high IQ skilled players who play within their roles. Nothing fancy, just 3's and boring layups. Really hope we play a nice complete clean game making over 40% from 3 against Nova. Been a while since we've had one of those games at home.

A kid should know you gotta go for off rebounds, to try and get 2nd chance points. Imagine mullin telling Steer not to go for off rebounds? Steer won't say anything but he'll look at Chris like wtf?
A win is a win and I really don't care how we got there. I don't think you can say we should beat this team by 15 or we are 10 points better than this team or that team. At this point in the season in the Big East Conference every game is going to be a dog fight and we came out on top last night. I will take six more just like it to end the season if it means we win out the rest of the way. On to Villanova, let's make that game a dog fight, seems like that just might give us our best chance to win.

The problem is that Mullin, the Clark Kent of the team, has been letting Jimmy Olsen coach the team. Jimmy is not a hof anything and is making it up as he goes. Clark just follows along because he has never coached the "modern game" of college basketball. He's an NBA guy using NBA sets with high school age kids. The picture is disturbing and the urgency to hire an editor at the Daily Planet has been magnified in this 4th year of poorly edited melodramas.
If Mullin stays Mitch or Greg have to go.

It is pretty sad, but not unexpected: In our previous game, Providence out-rebounded us by 20 (including 16 offensive rebounds).
What's pathetic is that our coach not only doesn't value offensive rebounding but discourages it.

We won. Adjectives like “pathetic” don’t belong on theboostgame thread. You are mad we didn’t dominate every facet of the game against the #54 team in the country?
We traded the rebounding for 30 points scored on Brunk and their other bigs. They even went small at the end to match up better.
Would it kill you to say something nice? We are in sole possession of third place in a conference that has ten teams ranked inside the top 106 and nine inside the top 88.

See I blame California. Mullin spent too much time there as a rich dude. Probably had a personal assistant shopping for him, driving him around making phone calls. So now he has one personal assistant doing all of his recruiting and another doing the coaching. Richmond is the guy that he is long time friends with that gets paid to hang out with him.
I see this kind of thing all the time on the show Ballers

LOL!!
Now I know you are funny dude.
The only nice thing one could say is that we squeezed out a win in what would have been a sure loss, just like Providence at MSG, had Heron not been the only aggressive player on the roster. Shamorie has been sleepwalking in games. No one else knows how to create their own shot.
Whatever we run on offense seems off the fly. The team is usually poorly prepared for games. It's as if they were trained by guys that never coached before. The NBA country club approach has not worked.
Finally, I will let you in on a little talked about no so secret secret. Mullin and Slice disagreed on Slice's approach in handling the players during practices very sharply. This was a guy who never coached telling a veteran college basketball coach he was too hard on players that needed motivating.
What you see is the product of that philosophy. You would not see the breakdowns with a Mike Rice personality on the bench but as Beast once said, you can't have two head coaches on the bench and Mullin has already designated Greg as the co-head coach.
On to Villanova.

At this stage we are not deep enough to crash the offensive boards. LJ can do it occasionally but the risk of fouling is to great. When you crash the boards you tend to get offensive fouls out of aggression. Push from behind being the most common. We therefore get back into half court and play half court D and try to force turnovers. We are very good at this both in conference and OOC. I would bet with more depth in the future you will see a little more offensive rebounding,

It was significant that Heron shot 10 free throws v average of four last night. It seems he seldom got calls on bumps in lane in previous games & would be nice to see him get benefit of doubt more often. Of course each game differs, but his FTs really impacted game.

LMFAO!
Nepotism can only get him so far and his college record as the head coach at St. John's may get him an interview at a MAAC school but my guess would be Sacramento State or a Cal Northridge is in his future.
