Champagnie was unconscious tonight. Catch and pop jumpers, drives, fadeaways. Kid looked loose and on a mission. He’s going to be a problem for teams because we also have a lot of other scoring. Hard to just let on him and he’s a do-it-all forward. Total eye of the tiger and executed as such.
Its a confidence thing. Hes been through a big east season now. you can see it in Greg Williams too.

Where I dont see it is with earlington. It looks like hes lost confidence out there.
He’s got a lot more competition out there for PT & seems to be pressing, forcing shots. Last year’s shorter rotation played to his advantage. This deeper, more talented one may not, resulting in less minutes some nights.
Earlington needs to give us 10-12 minutes per game, with about 4.0ppg and 4.0rpg. He isn't big enough to play down low, but also not quick enough to play on the perimeter. He reminds me of a much, much less talented Anthony Glover.

It also looks like he either doesn't understand what his role on the team this year will be, or he simply does not want to accept what his role will be this season. He needs to go back to that junkyard dog mentality where he makes hustle plays and cleans up the boards. But when he has been out there during the first 3 games, it seems like he is desperately trying to get his & prove that he belongs, which has led to a lot of terrible, low quality shots.
I have to agree here. He needs to get back to being the best garbage man in the big east. The shots just arent falling for him right now.
Posh seemed to lose focus after the missed windmill. In the last 10 minutes, he looked like a freshman for the first time this season. I guess he is human after all. Sometimes, these things serve as a wake up call.
Both he and Williams need to “want” the ball, demand the ball at the end of the game. Both were essentially running away from it inbounding in the last 2.5 minutes. Like last year at times, we looked very uncomfortable being pressed, no one strong and decisive with the ball. Being fair, it is very, very difficult to want to play fast, faster and fastest, constantly pushing tempo and then all of a sudden flip a switch and become situational.
On the flip side, 25-28 minutes of dominating ball bookended by the slow start and terrible finish. BC made a run from 20 down to 8, we seemingly righted the ship only to have to hang on at the end.
Not sure if that is the “new” Champagnie but he obviously played a tremendous game, as did Alexander and Williams overall.
Situationally, and very much a hindsight second guess, not sure why Toro was on the court in the last couple of minutes rather than McGriff, who in a very small sample size had two very good defensive sequences and puts another good ball handler on the floor.

Although they made it interesting at the end this was a good win against a solid opponent. I was nervous after the St. Peter's game but the last two they have definitely shown how they can play. I was most impressed with he offense today. This was a major question mark coming into this season....how and who could score when hey need it. If Champ, Williams, and Posh and consistently like this we will have a very good year. Not 29 from Champ but you get what I'm saying. If our offense is able to score and distributes the ball we are in good shape.

Our d has been poor to start the season but I am not worried about that because it took the team a little while to gel defensively last year. The defense will come

I found Williams' game very impressive. 17 points on only 6 shots. 6 assists with only one turnover. 2 steals and 1 block. The young man is being asked to play a variety of roles, especially with Dunn out. Off the ball, PG, whatever is necessary.

As the season progresses, I look for him to be the glue that holds our team together. He appears to be very level headed and not get too high or low. On a team with 4 newcomers playing prominent roles, this is exactly what is needed.

Sort of the way this board views panther2.

I agree Panther. He seems like a very introspective young man, so on occasion when things aren't going well, he may overthink things and get down on himself. If he can keep those moments to a minimum, and keep his confidence up, he's going to have a very good year for us. Those are my psychological observations for the day lol.
Anyone else think Jon Crispin is a trainwreck of an announcer?

I watched him call a couple of VT games too, he just uses overuses cliches, struggles to finishes sentences, says non-sensical things like asking if St. John's stop playing fast paced and gets mocked by his play-by-play partners.
He also repeats the same point over and over again. Almost as if to to "see, I told you I was right!". Although he was right early on that it we kept up then fast pace, eventually we'd control the game.

I can tell you this: after speaking with other Big East fans, no one wants to play us. They are scared of Posh and Champ the most. BC fans were saying how outcoached they were. It's nice to be on the other side of these things. Posh is so relentless on defense, he's going to draw a lot of offensive fouls with guys trying to push him off out of frustration. Champ looks just as good as any Big East player right now. He might be on his way to the NBA if he keeps this up. He's so calm, collected, and knows what to do with the ball. Can hurt you mid range, 3 PT, or inside plus very good rebounding. Would be so nice if he stays 3-4 yrs but good problem if he leaves early for NBA. You need to be able to show recruits you can get guys drafted. Not sure what his thoughts are with staying or not but imagine him staying all 4? Him as a JR next yr plus Posh as a Soph and then Champ as a SR and Posh as a JR? By Champ's SR year we would probably be ranked assuming him and Posh kept playing better and better.

I think we are 1 more SG and 1 more true big 6'10 230+ away from being a top 3-5 Big East team and maybe even ranked. If our guys can play like they did (sans giving up big lead) last night somewhat consistently, this will be a regular tourney team. Posh and Champ should at worst be able to take us to the next 2 tourneys if we miss this year and they stay all 4.

You said it, Cuffe and one true athletic big away.... we aren’t as far off as people think.

To add to the point on Williams, I think he is a guy who’s going to have be our go-to at the SG spot, especially when Dunn gets back. GWill has to be givwn the starting spot and the reigns at SG. He has all the capability in the world and know needs the minutes and the green light to push on offense. Dunn is better as a lead guard and backup to Posh. He’s being undersold a bit here because we saw what he could do last year. He’s gotta come off the bench for Posh and not in the SG role. Unfortunately it takes away a chunk of minutes for McGriff who has honestly looked quite decent but that’s what happens when we are this deeps.

The nice thing about our depth is a guy like McGriff while not a star, can give us a few minutes of solid handling, a steady stroke, and decent defense while a starter rests. Can also hit his FT's. We are used to bench players being major liabilities. Now we have guys like him and Wusu who can come in and still be solid to give other guys breathers. Same goes for Dunn. I do think CMA should be careful not to leave our starters out too long. The starters last night are the ones we need to go with. They were clicking. Also surprised he did not call timeouts in spots where most of us naturally get that feeling to take one as BC built momentum. But his player development appears to be legit so we are lucky in that regard. Shot 35% last night from 3...not amazing, not bad...rock solid. That's where we will need to be many games to give us real chances at winning against anyone. We get a Nate Watson type big, and a Jordan Tucker type shooter and I think we're in business in the thick of things again.

I said it in the game thread, I look for Champ & Williams to be our go to crunch time leaders as the season progresses. Williams makes all the little plays right (offense & defense), rarely turns the ball over, is very explosive to the hoop and can hit the three when his confidence is up which it should be after last night's performance. He is another example of a high 3 star/low 4 star recruit who can really play and a great kid to boot. Although from the Mullin regime, a CMA type of kid all the way.

One more thing that stood out to me: our ball handling is so much better. Williams especially...there were a few plays he boldly dribbled into a few defenders and somehow split them and stayed with the ball even as they swiped. I cringed a few times assuming a turnover was coming but pleasantly surprised. Moore needs to work on hand strength going to the hoop in half court situations. I also think Cole had some good looks he missed from 3. Would think he's too good of a shooter to not be due for a hot game soon.

We’ll have our ups and downs this year with so many new guys about to face BE competition. That said the type of kids staff are bringing on board are coachable and seemingly on board with the tough but nurturing culture CMA mandates. Next year with this nucleus in tact and a few more pieces we should really be in position to make some noise in NCAA T. This year will be fun and who knows true final outcome with a “true coach” on the sidelines.

I just hope Williams realizes how good he can be. He is very talented but he needs to stay assertive. Sometimes he can get passive. I love it when he attacks like last night. He also can hit free throws. Huge upside as he can handle, shoot and drive. As exhibited last night he can also finish with explosiveness. Need that to become more the norm than the exception.

Saw on SportsCenter they had Posh's missed dunk. Not even the "Not Top 10"...it was on the actual SportsCenter Instagram page. Among the top comments were: Cole Anthony: "Posh nooooo! :D" and Joe Johnson saying that TJ Cleveland did NOT like that lol. He will learn. Do we know if Williams' dunk made top 10?

Williams and Posh need to make a trade. A piece of Posh's assertiveness goes to Williams, and a piece of Williams controlled play to Posh. I don't think I have ever seen a player with a motor like Posh. It is remarkable to watch.
