(POST GAME). Boston College (@Mohegan Sun), Mon., Nov. 30, 6p, ESPNU / 970 AM WN

This is a bad comparison, but in terms of results, Posh steals from behind remind me of Walt Frazier's ability to sneak up from behind and swipe the ball with very quick hands. Can't remember when we had someone who did that as well as Posh.

Plenty covered here. 2 points. 1)Cole will probably not be as strong a 3 point shooter as he was in JUCO due to the fact he will be defended harder and he will be playing defense harder than he ever has!!!!! This will also lead to foul trouble as well. This should improve as his conditioning improves and he spends more minutes on the floor with Champ who can shoot the 3 at a high rate. 2) With the improvement Champ has shown this will benefit the team greatly. With an additional 1/2 step of quickness and working on becoming more explosive off the jump he could easily get "Paid to Play"

Cole is 1-10 from 3 the last 2 games. You can tell he is very frustrated.

Good call Moose. 3 steals per game in his time here is pretty impressive.

They even called a foul last night on Posh and I swear the ref blew the call. Anticipated contact but Posh got his hand on ball only. He’s going to have to be careful because we don’t need him in foul trouble.

In his belated season debut, Julian Champagne scored a career-high 29 points and added 10 rebounds. St. John’s led by as many as 20 points but needed a late defensive play from Champagne to preserve a 97-93 win over Boston College in the bubble at Mohegan.

St. John’s roared back after the Eagles established an early 19-9 advantage. Posh Alexander, who scored 16 of his 18 points in the opening stanza on perfect 6-6 shooting, combined with Champagne to provide productive and efficient offense. St. John’s pressure defense and transition game were on full display and Alexander, in addition to showing a great scoring touch, had 5 assists and just one turnover.

With the Johnnies leading 52-40 at the intermission the two teams traded hoops to start the second half. Then, a terrific sequence by Greg Williams Jr. propelled St. John’s to an 8-0 run and a 75-55 advantage with just over 13 minutes left. Williams’ terrific work included an alert flip pass to Dylan Adde-Wusu for a triple followed by a powerful slam off a feed from Marcellus Earlington which put the exclamation point on the spurt.

Leading by 20 it appeared St. John’s might have taken their foot off the gas a bit. Coach Mike Anderson described it as “playing not to lose” but the result was that BC took advantage of the opening with a 14-0 run of their own that the lead to just 6 points.

Adde-Wusu helped St. John’s regain their footing when he stopped the rally with an assist to Champagne for a layup. St. John’s pushed the margin to double digits before momentum turned again. A 10-1 run by Boston College in the game’s closing moments, fueled in part by 5 St. John’s turnovers in 6 possessions brought them to within 3 points. Even the normally reliable Champagne was bitten by the turnover bug as a miscommunication on an inbounds pass between him and Alexander gave the Eagles a chance to tie the game. On that final possession, St. John’s defended a double screen and a pass to BC’s Wynston Tabb. He missed a corner trey and then had a follow shot blocked by Champagne, who picked up the loose ball and threw it ahead to reserve guard John McGriff who converted the first of two free throws to give St. John’s the 4-point margin that salted the game away. McGriff played just 3 minutes but made a key contribution in the game’s closing moments. The decision by Coach Anderson to sub him in for center Arnaldo Toro worked perfectly on BC’s last two possessions. Not only did McGriff provide terrific defense on the ball but the lineup put Champagne in position to hedge after guarding one of the screeners. Add to that his clutch free throw and his small but essential contribution to a big win cannot be overlooked.

Notes and Observations: Along with the terrific work by Champagne and Alexander, Greg Williams filled the stat sheet with 17 points 6 assists, and 2 steals. He also filled in admirably taking the minutes that normally belong to Rasheem Dunn playing point guard when Posh Alexander needs a breather. Adde-Wusu tied Williams for team-high honors in assists while scoring 9 points of his own. Champagne’s 29 points came on 11-20 shooting, 2-5 from distance, and a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe.

The Johnnies will remain in the bubble to face BYU tomorrow at 5 pm; a game that replaces the canceled game against Texas Tech
Putzman saw the need to take a shot at our past coaches, Childish!!!
Come on man, is there really a need for that? And if anything, I was the one who brought up the fact that many of the kids who played for our last 2 coaches had a me-first mentality. As opposed to CMA's kids who clearly have a team-first mentality. I see that as more of a fact, then a cheap shot.

Not really asshole

Feel free to pm me you cowardly grouchy fool w nothing to offer and we can chat. If you need instructions let me know
LMAO, damn {aultz, let him know how you really feel.

1. Greg Williams's first half dunk on the back pass was awesome, he had a great game, making Greg Williams Sr proud, I bet

2. Against LaSalle Posh had a chance at dunking and instead just laid the ball in, I was impressed, I hate missed dunks.

3. Cole has to let Carraher thank him when he comes to the bench, IMHO.
I can tell you this: after speaking with other Big East fans, no one wants to play us. They are scared of Posh and Champ the most. BC fans were saying how outcoached they were. It's nice to be on the other side of these things. Posh is so relentless on defense, he's going to draw a lot of offensive fouls with guys trying to push him off out of frustration. Champ looks just as good as any Big East player right now. He might be on his way to the NBA if he keeps this up. He's so calm, collected, and knows what to do with the ball. Can hurt you mid range, 3 PT, or inside plus very good rebounding. Would be so nice if he stays 3-4 yrs but good problem if he leaves early for NBA. You need to be able to show recruits you can get guys drafted. Not sure what his thoughts are with staying or not but imagine him staying all 4? Him as a JR next yr plus Posh as a Soph and then Champ as a SR and Posh as a JR? By Champ's SR year we would probably be ranked assuming him and Posh kept playing better and better.

I think we are 1 more SG and 1 more true big 6'10 230+ away from being a top 3-5 Big East team and maybe even ranked. If our guys can play like they did (sans giving up big lead) last night somewhat consistently, this will be a regular tourney team. Posh and Champ should at worst be able to take us to the next 2 tourneys if we miss this year and they stay all 4.
Julian is interesting when you consider his NBA case. I'd be interested if anyone has a comp for him. To me he comes across as a tweener who is a step slow for the NBA level. One of those guys who will be a great college player but the NBA looks for different things. But you never know, he could keep developing to the point where he is on the NBA radar.

Thanks for the post .However not to put a neg on the game was glad we won but disappointed in our defense.Their guards blew by us like we were standing still likewise with Toro their forwards went right by him Didn’t feel the he gave us the an edge on the boards that he was recruited to be.I liked our fight and determination the game felt helter- skelter
But like our fear 1 st mentality hope we continue to improve feel when all things come together we will surprise

skelter for the most part but guess at the pace set plays were out

I also believe him to be more in the range of 6'6", not 6'8" as listed. Didn't see him on any NBA draft projection boards before yesterday, but that may have changed or may change in the future

3 guys fouled out. If we played more aggressive defense the cardboard cutouts of Captain Obvious behind the basket were going to have to play eventually.

Idk about you guys, but watching Champ last night...he reminded me of the perfect mold of a Villanova player. High IQ, well-spoken, good high character kid, may not be flying doing 360 dunks at Rucker and not the quickest, but just calm, cool collected, and can do a lot of things offensively. Never out of control, selfless. He's Jeremiah Robinson-Earl at Villanova.

I thought Champ looked comfortable with the dribble drive and beat his man a few times that way. His NBA chances rest in his being closer to 6'8 than 6'6, and his ability to be a consistent threat from 3. In a game many players would show ring rust, Champ instead looked in mid season form.

I see Champ developing into a Bonzi Wells-type player. Won’t blow you away with hops or anything but steady and crafty.

Two complaints have been SJU sometimes plays halter shelter basketball and too often has players in foul trouble. For certain periods of the game a SJU backcourt man will try to get the opponent to pick up his dribble and another SJU player, usually Moore will by waving his arms cause a turnover or deflection resulting in a SJU possession. If the opponent is able to get the ball to a teammate they have a four on three advantage and this results in constant switching by the SJU players which looks like a fire drill.
This type of defense also results in more than usual fouling by SJU players. As long as Anderson is on the SJU bench expect to see a lot of helter skelter and foul trouble. By next season he will have his roster where he can play this type of basketball even more often. He will also produce more wins than SJU fans are accustomed to.

Speaking of Captain Obvious, on one play Wusu crashed into one of the many Captains knocking it down. He tried to pick it up and place it back but it slipped. He then proceeded to flip poor Captain Obvious to the floor in frustration.
