Official Visits

Back to official visits. They don't mean squat at St. John's. Most of local targets have been to campus a few times. You have either won the trust of the kid and their family or you have not. Spend the time bonding with a kid and not wasting trips to Georgia to visit a kid you have zero relationship with. Use your staff to its fullest capacity. Recruiting is a long term investment not speed dating.

Our #closing ability is clearly limited to high school kids, not transfers. I didn't specify that but yes that is clear.

Someone also made a fair point earlier that 12 big east kids didn't sign, they verbally committed. Still though, when is it our turn? I actually thought someone a few days ago made a great point I hadn't thought of - that we aren't even chasing some of the kids with the realistic view we'll land them, rather we are "setting them up" for potential transfer acquisition down the road a la Heron. That would be quite an interesting strategy and perhaps not totally without merit given the transfer climate, where the rules will only continue to loosen allowing for more movement. Still seems to me we need to have at least some success with the direct to high school route as well but I don't really know what i'm talking about to be fair. Lastly, why the piling on of Mr. Zaun? I am fairly new to semi regular posting so perhaps i don't know all the history, but I say Let Zaun Be Zaun.
I used to post like 5-6 years ago and I admittedly acted like a fool and I was very disrespectful and said stupid things I later regretted on here. Not to use it as an excuse but I was in my early to mid 20's at the time. Got banned but thankfully Paul gave me another chance which he didn't have to do. I'm now 29 and I'm one of the most passionate SJ fans you will ever meet.

I have tried extending an olive branch to the guys on here, but it seems only 3 or 4 are willing to let bygones be bygones. All I do is try to discuss SJ hoops on here, but rather than people offering on topic rebuttals I look forward to with other POV's, they are calling me out nonstop ball-breaking with wise arse gifs/pictures, snarky comments, personal attacks, and say I repeat myself every post I make it seems. Have I repeated myself? Of course, so does literally every last guy on here. But there's a certain fervor to single me out on this forum and alienate me as I'm held to different standards which is very annoying. The reactions you will get on this forum seem to be based on who the poster is rather than the content of their posts. I too come here for escape and genuine discussion, but I have people coming at me left and right constantly and I've never been the type to just sit back and take it. Enough with the ball breaking and double standards. If you have something relevant to say about one of my posts, I'd love to read it even if we disagree. If you are just out to pile on with the other guys targeting me and talk about repetitive posts, then hit your damn scroll button. There shouldn't be high school cliques on a sports forum for grown men.
well said first paragraph. As far as the other stuff it will all go away in time. Some people aren’t harsh on others because a lot of the people here have met personally and are friends or have been posting so long they are friends. There will be a point you end up meeting some of these guys at Carnesseca or wherever and I pretty much guarantee things start changing. In the meantime if someone comes at you with a comment you don’t like just give it back to them but in a jokingly way showing it doesn’t bother you. If someone says they don’t like your posts just say something like “ you are revoking their free uber ride after the next bad loss “ if someone tells you to go on medication just ask them which one are they on that they can recommend. Etc etc. you will make them laugh and others and the other stuff will stop dying down . Just my opinion
Agreed on the meeting part...I think that's what people aren't realizing. I get spun into this evil monster on here, meanwhile I'm just a guy who enjoys getting some nice chicken parm at Acquista's before a game and having a beer at the Garden. I even started a Twitter fan group with one of my friends to try and rally more support for the program, as Twitter gets younger fans involved and we sorely lack that demographic (30 and under or so). Once people found out about it on here instead of saying "cool", they come at me and make it negative which takes significant mental gymnastics. Between us we spent several thousand between applying for trademarks, buying shirts in bulk, creating a website to sell them (when it was still Storm the Garden until the MSG lawyers gave us a friendly call), plus free giveaways at games. We literally went to Party City stores all over LI buying out some of their stuff to give away to students. Goff appreciated all the effort we put in and coaches were shouting us out on Twitter. My point is that I deserve a break and I would argue I put more effort in than most fans. Even when I do good things that can only help, it gets spun negatively. The irony is that I'm constantly accused of being negative. If you don't want to give me a chance, that says more about you than me IMO. Just ignore me and have fun. Thank you to those who go against the grain and see my point.

That being said, I don't want to clog space on this anymore. Back on topic, I'd rather have Aidan than Kofi or Precious even though all are longshots. Aidan looks like a freak to me and I feel he'd have the biggest impact.

Agree, Georgia trip was odd considering point you made. Common read was kid was staying south.

Now there's an idea.

Mike, I agree Aidan would be great, and the Irish angle would be fun in NYC. However, all three of these kids would be phenomenal gets at this stage and I'd be happy with any one of the three - sign the first one we can, but wouldn't be surprised if they all wind up waiting for spring signing period.

On that subject, I would think Matt drove the strategy and felt good about the relationship he has cultivated. Atlanta is a pretty short flight, if the kid is close to there so the logistics may be cheap flight, and at worst an overnight. Matt's not crazy - and relationships that are well cultivated in this phase sometimes end up as transfers to you.

The Georgia trip coincided on the same day they were already in Florida visiting Quinones and Achiuwa.

I wouldn't make a big deal about spending a little time visiting with a longshot. Trust me those extra few hours are not going to be the difference between landing Iggy/Prescious/Cockburn or not.

It was just an odd visit to a long shot at best. Our visit did have one positive effect. It made him commit to Audurn within hours!;)

It goes back to my earlier theory (which to be fair someone else had suggested). It is very possible they are targeting potential transfer targets and recruiting them through the initial HS recruiting process to establish the relationship. Considering Crooked Bruce Pearl (as our President would call him) is involved, it's not a bad bet that something goes horribly wrong at Auburn and this kid comes back on the market at some point. That's when Coach Matt swoops in with a shoulder to cry on and transfer paperwork.

And this is a thousand times the problem that repetitive posting is. You've got to learn to let things go. If you don't learn to let things go, especially over something as dumb as people criticizing your posts on a fan board, I guarantee you'll be dead by the time you are 50. I'm sure there are some guys here who post just to get a rise out of you. Have you ever considered not responding? They'll probably get bored and leave you alone. . .

I would say that every single sale I've ever made I walked into a potential client as a long shot. If you don't do an in home visit, you have zero shot. You never know how a kid's family will react to how they are impressed with the team visiting. With Mullin, there is always the "this worked great for me, so I'm not selling something that I didn't do myself". There's also the experience he can tell recruits that his boys grew up in California, and now absolutely love New York and decided to live there for now. I see zero negative in a home visit, and only upside, probably because my entire professional life I've had to fight like hell to get an on site.

They had some communication with the kid after an offer and they invited the staff in for a pitch and the staff was already down that way that day. Making way too much of this.

I have been critical as anyone of the staff's inability to close on key recruits but not on this, really nothing wrong with what they did.

I am not informed enough to comment intelligently on any of this, but it would seem to me that if genuine remorse is shown for past misdeeds then bygones should be bygones. None of this stuff is nearly important enough in the Grand Scheme of Life to ruin anyone's day. Life is just too damn short. This should be fun, even for us Negative Nillies.
I don't disagree but there's close to a dozen guys on this board that when I see it is them posting I skip to the next. Mike just happens to be one of them. I would assume there's about everybody who does the same when they see it's me. If admitting that to Mike is ruining his day I am sorry but he should also get some thicker skin, whatever size that might be.

.......they invited the staff in for a pitch and.......threw them a curve ball!
This kid was NEVER coming from all reports. The pitch must have really sucked because I could count the hours after they said "Mitch who" that he committed to Auburn. There is nothing wrong with what they did obviously but throwing spaghetti against the wall is not the way to get recruits.
