NIL’s

Hard to view Big 5 conference Football and Basketball as anything other than over paid Minor Leagues. I think most fans felt athletes deserved a livable stipend. But NIL is obscene. Next up you will begin to see trades between schools. Avoiding the xfer portal. You need a QB, we need an RB. We'll send you X you send us Y . Kids will transfer new teams Just pick up their NIL payment with the player.

Just about the trade/transfer possibility you mentioned. If teams can’t control the players enough to keep them, what makes you think they could decide where they transfer to?

Quick question, what's the highest TV rated minor league baseball game?

Anything like this?

WOW. Some serious crap games in here,
Some context, XFL Championship game on ABC had 1.42 million viewers. So that means a random week 3 matchup between Marshall/Ohio State had nearly triple the viewers, or better yet, a 10:30 PM EST start game between BYU/Kansas State had more viewers.

Nonsensical to say these guys should have a living stipend when pulling in that much money for everyone else.

Major conference revenue producing athletics are now professional sports with athletes making 1 year commitments to a school. Athletes playing for 3 or 4 schools maintain the vaguest charade of student while raking in 6 or 7 figure salaries.

Schools unable to pay an athlete sufficiently will almost surely lose him ir her the very next season. As long as supporters of major programs continue to ante up operating expenses in terms of NIL and donations, thise schools will happily look the other way.

Reform? Not likely in my opinion. As long as fans continue to pay up, network ratings remain high, and your school is winning, no one will really care. Even if anyone did, once Pandora's box is opened, closing it is not a likely outcome.

The House settlement is literally going to lead to massive reforms

Not as much as you may think. First off the settlement is on hold as the presiding judge rejected it mainly due to the attempt to cap outside income an athlete can make (NIL). The proposed cap is a non-starter so the potential to earn seven figures will still be out there and that is outside the revenue sharing between the athletes and the schools which will be included in such settlement if it ever comes to be. Athletes will still be able to transfer.

The settlement basic function is to protect the NCAA and the schools from future lawsuits and keep the government out of their affairs.

I think there's a very strong appetite with the college programs and coaches to make NIL more in-house, controllable and transparent. The transfer thing will be interesting to see what happens.

That you are correct on however the judge has told them they cannot limit an athletes potential for income based on NIL including if say a hotel chain, insurance company, a car dealership our other outside entity whats to make use of the athletes name, image and/or likeness.

Can't imagine sending my kids to a division 1 school. Talk about make-believe college.

House v. NCAA settlement revises language around NIL in new filing

From the article:

The settlement, which would be a historically impactful one for the financial structure of college sports, hit a snag in the approval process during the preliminary hearing earlier this month. Wilken, presiding over the case in the Northern District of California, sent the parties “back to the drawing board,” with the stipulations involving third-party NIL receiving the bulk of that attention.

“The parties have made changes … to clarify these provisions so that it is explicit that the Agreement is only allowing the continuation of existing NCAA rules which already prohibit so-called ‘faux’ NIL payments in narrow and more objectively defined circumstances,” the brief stated.

Agreed to in principle in May, the settlement would have massive ramifications on college sports if approved, including the ability for current and future athletes to receive pay directly from schools, breaking with the NCAA’s century-old system of amateurism. This revenue-sharing model would include an annual pool capped at north of $20 million per school to be distributed to athletes starting next season. However, one aspect of the settlement that is critical from the NCAA’s perspective is renewed enforcement of rules limiting NIL payments to “a valid business purpose” and eliminating the imbalanced pay-for-play payments that have become commonplace among booster-led NIL collectives.

Under the revised settlement proposal, “enforcement authority over third-party NIL deals would no longer extend to all third parties … or the broadly defined term ‘boosters’” and instead focus on “a narrower group of entities and individuals closely affiliated with the schools.” The briefing specifies these individuals as people affiliated with an NIL collective or involved in a players recruitment, or individuals/families/affiliated entities that have contributed more than $50,000 to a university’s athletics department over the course of their lifetime.

The majority of students going to a Division 1 school are not athletes and none of this applies to them and I am the proud parent of one who is currently at a FBS school along with one who graduated from a FCS school and another one who graduated from a non football D1 school. There are also athletes at these schools who are good students whether they are getting NIL or not.

The 3 year rule in football is a good one.
The physical difference between the NFL and college is absolutely shocking.

The amount of players that come out after their junior year and have injury-shortened careers is eye-opening.

Nobody knows that better than Giants fans…David Wilson drafted in the first round didn’t make it 2 seasons. Hakeem Nicks was unbelievable early and out of the league by 27. Manninghan, Steve Smith, Reuben Randle, etc. Even Landon Collins, who was incredible early, wasn’t the same at age 25 and out the league at 27.
Shocking? Went to a bc game earlier this month. The tackles on the offensive line line ranged from 309-362. How much do your boys weigh?

I don't. I just think there will be situations where it will work. Not saying it S.O.P. Just another option we haven't seen yet. And it will happen.

Heard OSU spent 3 million for Bama freshman All-American safety Caleb Downs. They along with Texas Tenn Ole Miss spent big in portal.

You think they dropped that much coin on Downs? No doubt they are amongst the biggest spenders in NIL, but 3 mill for Downs seems unlikely.

Miami got cam for two!

Nonetheless, every team you mentioned spent big on NIL. Records are indicative of it.
