Agree BJR. The need to take repeated potshots at departing coach and players is just so unnecessary. Wish them well (or not) and let's move on.

I've never so much as shook Chris Mullins hand. From the outside looking in I see a man who is still married to his wife of over 30 years, a wife who appears devoted to him. A guy who has stayed clean and sober for decades after struggles in his youth. His kids seem to care about him. And every brother does not care for another as Mullin appeared to do in the last year. He also seemed, again from the outside view, to be much less than the model employee. And in regard to the last point the employer has let the guy go.

Overall that doesn't add up to saint for me. But evil guy and villain seems way out there to me. He is gone now, didn't work out, good luck to him. I wish him well.

This was handled incredibly poorly as to the team/players, which should have been the #1 priority.

It however is far from clear that is Mullin's fault. It's far more concerning to me from a Cragg perspective than a Mullin one. It was the former's job to get this part right, not Mullin's, and by accounts to date he didn't.

Mullin did some things very well while here, including raising profile of and attention on program, and some things very poorly, which could probably be captured broadly as not maximizing the resources, strategy, commitment, and operational efficiency needed to run a program at this level. This is probably a big part of why he's no longer the coach.

But by all accounts he was very close with his players and didn't engage in the dramatic. Seemed he related to them on a player to player level and kept team and player matters in house. Not surprising given his playing background, and not a quality all coaches have.

Making what I think is the correct decision to move on and blaming most everything on Mullin don't have to run in tandem. Not fair for them to.

If this was the school's move as believed, then it's their job to make sure the players are communicated to transparently and before news breaks. At a minimum they need to be kept updated. If they weren't then that's not on Mullin. Would have clearly been better if he were in New York, but if he's being pushed out by the school it's not his obligation to sit around and wait for them to do that.

Agree re players and it would be a lot easier for some of us to move on from CM if we didn't have to continually read the plaudits and flowery remarks about his tenure here. Could care less about the results it was treating the job like a part time gig and the half assed effort he gave for a 6 year contract at over 2 mill per. Even if he made 500,000 per I would have expected a full effort but the higher money makes it all the more hard to take. If he wasn't going to be fully invested he never should have taken the job and if he though he could and found out differently he should have stepped away. I'll make this my last knock on CM even if I have to read more gushing over him for the sake of my fellow redmen fans who still hold him in high esteem.

LOOK FORWARD,
. Great Post , Brook Jersey ! Your words should be applauded and give pause to this insanity that has turned a already Toxic site into a even lower one . The attacks on Mullin , at this point , are without Class and identify those making insulting and hurtful comments as less than sterling . And , there are too many of them , usually by a easily identifiable crowd that repeat their vitriol over and over . Yes , they may overwhelm this Board with their posse like attitudes but, as you mentioned the last few days have revealed themselves to be even lower than originally thought . Some of the most adverse Commentators might be Alums , some maybe not . It’s hard to believe any St John’s Alum, regardless of Mullin’s Coaching, would resort to these low character remarks at this time . There is a nastiness on here that has infected this Site for far too long a time . People attacking other posters , attacking the Coaches , Players , Staff and likely those taking tickets . But , it’s a reflection of our Nation’s times and it isn’t a good thing for our School or Country . I don’t have to identify the most egregious of Posters , they have made themselves known , over and over . There are many , many Alums and Fans on this site that are appalled by these personally insulting comments . We know who they are too . So , Brook Jersey , you are not alone in protesting the trashy postings of those who take the low road ! The Mullin Bashing should stop now . Those who wished his demise may think they have won but , have they ? I doubt it !

Not talking to players like Heron after the season ended is disgraceful. Same is true for the speakerphone conversation. He should've been there yesterday to meet the players in person, not next week. These actions, along with all the recruiting stories we've heard, are inexcusable.

I'm sure he was hurt/embarrassed about "stepping down", but that doesn't matter. Suck it up. People have to put themselves into uncomfortable situations all the time for the betterment of others. He's a grown adult and his student athletes look up to him. He's also getting paid $2 million a year for this, and still feels he deserves his last $4 million. Man up and be there for the players who committed years of their lives to you. Perhaps he has been close with his players these past few years and this was an anomaly, but that doesn't excuse his actions.

The thing that angers me the most is the allegation that he hasn't spoken with Heron (and others?) since the season ended. As we all know, Heron had a brutal final game and he needs some encouragement. Be there for your player even if it's uncomfortable.

I won't pretend to know everything going on. I understand some of you like Mullin the player and perhaps Mullin the person. There are two sides to every story so he deserves to have some defenders. I'll just say I'm embarrassed by some of these stories and am glad he won't be coaching us next year.

To be fair, it appears he thought he was returning for next season, and likely would be interacting with them in person on his return to campus. Likely if he was on campus last week to discuss an extension that his plans could have been to meet his team then, only to be apprised that the topic was separation and not extension.
I don't know why.... but I read Jeff Goodman's piece on who he would pick as the next coach. His ideal pick was Bobby Hurley, but of course he doesn't think we will get him (shocking).

So his prediction was that we'd end up with Ryan Odom from UMBC. Just thought I'd share because I haven't really heard that name mentioned yet. Obviously pretty underwhelming.

Wouldnt mind him, in my opinion he showed he can coach this year. I was impressed after the UVA upset last year but I wasnt sold; I thought he needed some more time before making a jump because hes so young. Then he went out and won 20 games this year with a whole new team basically, at UMBC thats no easy task. Nice young up and coming guy with the pedigree to match as his dad Dave was a high major coach. I wouldnt be mad at all if he ended up our new coach if we got turned down by Hurley and Pitino is off limits.

Lot of opinions on who is desirable and not.

From a prospective coaching perspective, do you think this is a good job? There is a saying that "culture eats strategy for breakfast." Since SJU has a brutal culture basketball wise for 20+ years, I think this job is not desirable for a promising up and comer, better to wait, then come here. Has it always been the coaches fault, over last 2 decades?

curious to your thoughts?

My problems begin with the words 'end up with'.
That implies slogging through lists of guys and wasting 'time' we do not have to repair our roster and rebuild our team and not face the empty and bereft roster Mullin faced in years 1 - 2, and the 'bad habits' that ensued from that predicament.
If Hurley says 'nyet', move on fast to and through Plan B and hit Plan C 'fast' if Plan B candidates say no.
Who's on the A list: Hurley, Brey, Dawkins? The B list: Nate James, Rhoades, Odom, Pitino, Jr.?
I'm beginning to think we're going to miss on Hurley.
Go through the lists fast.
Plan C: Cluess.
IMO, we need this resolved by early next week at the latest.

IMO a major part of Mullin's failure to elevate the status of SJU basketball goes all the way back to the parting of ways with Slice who appeared to have the coaching and recruiting attributes Mullin needed.
Slice's departure left a hole in the high school recruiting effort which highlighted Mullin's adversion to participating in that effort. If he couldn't get along with Slice not replacing him with an ass't with similar qualities caused a huge problem.

Interesting take Dan. He was the AC for UNC Charlotte the first few years after we moved here and interim HC briefly when the coach had a serious illness. Had an excellent year as HC for Div 2 Lenoir-Renoir before getting the UMBC job. I do like the idea of a young, aggressive up and comer if we can't get Hurley.

I think Cragg was the key hire. I think after the way the garden rocked last year and a full CA that Cragg could sell the right coach on this position. Who ever puts this program back on the map will have a hugh feather in his resume, I would hope the success and what it would bring would make the coach want to stay, but you never know. Like I said yesterday there is no reason we can not be a Villanova, a Gonzaga or a Xavier; are those coaches going anywhere?

Mark Jackson on St. John's opening and Chris Mullin: "I'm not going to talk, I have no comment." Wouldn't say if he has any interest in job. #sjubb

He just exudes love.

It is all the doing of the AD cragg. He wanted mullin gone since he got here and wants to give the job to his buddy from Duke. Pitino is the one they should want

Cragg wanted mullin gone from the start. He wants his dukie pal to get the job to build his resume and then go elsewhere.

Doherty quit his job with the A-10
Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
