Mullin Stepping Down

Can't help wondering how different things might have been had the call in the first Seton Hall game gone differently.
I'll go.one better. Watching Kyle calmly nail a three deep in the right corner, then net three free throws to put Virginia in the finals, I could only think of Heron's 1-12 and negative hat trick at the line in Dayton vs. ASU and think how a 7-12 and 3 free throws could have saved the season.
Point is well taken though about SH game.
Except by season end out team looked lost.
At the end of the day 1 more win in conference. Take your pick. Seton Hall on the road. DePaul at home. Any of the games Heron missed. That moves SJU from 7 to 3 seed. Changes the entire complexion of BE Tournament. Avoid the play in game. And we are all likely very much singing a slightly different tune.
That's exactly how frustrating this season was. Granted there were fundamental coaching deficiencies but would have been and were overlooked by the metrics you suggested. That's why there was a little more to the decision than just record.

You call out others for being too negative yet you state we will never make the Final 4 again. As Lou C once said "We're going Mo", just not with Mo the next time.
There is negative and then there is realistic. I do think we will eventually make a tourney sometime in next 5 years.
Zach's main info leaker
Nah, this is Zach's never ending crusade to be a "responsible" journalist. It is the cross he bears for the sake of us fans.

According to Zagoria:

"Chis Mullin said goodbye to his players via speakerphone yesterday, per sources. AD Mike Cragg was on hand and told players he would support whatever decisions they made about their futures."

Look, I totally respect Mullin's decision. At the end of the day, he needs to do whatever he feels is best for himself and his family.

However, in my opinion, to tell this information to his players/team over the phone or video conference is comepletely bullsh*t! If he doesn't have the respect for his players or school to at the very least have this conversation face to face, then I am glad he quit. That's a very bush league move by him, and it just shows how much he really 'loved' his alma mater.

Not the saint he’s implied to be. Not a coach either. Great player leave at that.

At face value it's a bad move, but if he was already in California and his resignation was forced (it likely was), then as a timing thing he had to speak to his players ASAP. I would hope he would say that he would meet with them in person in a few days to discuss their concerns and thank them. He probably should have resigned from New York, and then met with his players immediately after.

Either already high tailed it to Cali or too busy counting his money from the buy out.

How soon before the Post follows the Daily News?
I'm guessing you're referring to lack of coverage? Because for myself I've wondered why I can never find any articles about SJU in the DN. Is there any particular reason for that?

Again just as an example told Heron had ZERO communication with Mullin since the season ended. It is traditional that coaches have exit meetings with players specifically one's that have eligibility. These meetings will determine what role if any they have next year, should they transfer, should they turn pro, should they come back? What should they work on in the off-season etc?

I cannot tell you how dysfunctional this was. It may have been a bit messy in terms of how it got here but a coaching change was the only way to end this dysfunction. SJU gets to hit the reset button and that is a good thing.

Daily News used to have a staff of over 400 now they are down to a staff of 40 something.

Your post, while referring to what Mullin is implied to be, makes implications of its own. His problems with substance abuse early in his career are well known, and he has apparently be sober since Don Nelson gave him a wakeup call. If you know anything specific to back up your inference, it would be nice to disclose it here or PM me. This is exactly the stuff I hate.

Just another reason why we should have had an experienced Associate HC on the bench, instead of learning by osmosis.

The hatred for Mr. Mullin from some of you amazes me. I realize he didn't do the best job ever as our coach, but he gave it a shot. It didn't work out as we had hoped. I remind you that he had a contract to be paid and the school forced his hand to "resign". He shouldn't collect the $$$ that was agreed to from both sides?

I love the anger from some of you that he is collecting HIS money that the school agreed to give him. I guess you would give back $4 million dollars out of the goodness of your hearts after you were fired?

The attitude is laughable and naive. Or, maybe you're just jealous, resentful and bitter in your careers?

Update from Zagoria:

"Chris Mullin addressed his players via speaker phone from California on Tuesday, but plans to meet with them individually in person next week."

It's good to see that he does plan to meet with each player next week, but assuming we have a new coach by then, will the create any kind of conflict? Would our new coach want Mullin being around the players? My initial thought is absolutely not. What happens if, while the new coach is trying to re-recruit any of our current players, Mullin walks in and tells them he thinks they should go pro or transfer?

If I'm Cragg, I'm calling Mullin and telling him that if he wants to meet with any of the players, he has a 48hr window to do so. If he cannot do it in that time frame, he will not be permitted to do so on campus.

Someone mentioned it last night with Magic stepping down from the Lakers and the parallels with Chris and SJU and at first I thought “nah,” then I watched Brian Windhorst of ESPN describe the dysfunction of the Lakers and thought, “OMG that is SJU.”

He first described separating Magic the great player and businessman from being an NBA Executive. He simply was not equipped to do it. Also talked about all of the people surrounding Jeanie Buss as having Laker connections but where were the professional people WHO KNOW THE BUSINESS.

People who will hold others accountable? People who will put in the work and time? And I couldn’t help but think of Mullin and Richmond and GSJ…

Trading for Anthony Davis, the Pelicans were not going to say, “Oh it’s Magic let’s trade him to the Lakers..” I kept thinking players are not coming to SJU because of Chris Mullin. They want to win, they want to be positioned to go to the next level. They want a staff to take them there. They don’t give a damn about 1985, just like Windhorst says modern NBA players don’t give a damn about 80’s Magic vs Bird.

I’ll say it again Mike Krzyzewski is 72 years old or whatever, yet you will see him in a sweaty gym the last weekend in April, why? Because it is about NOW….

Windhorst starts between 7 and 8 minute mark.

I think people are upset because he didn't fulfill the duties of his contract and is seeking full compensation as if he did. In other words, he did not hold up his end of the bargain. It seems that after his first season he did the bare minimum to keep that contract valid. Surely you must understand where the frustration is coming from.

That's a load, frankly. It's been said he was close with his players, and he is not going to come in here to drop bombs. I would expect that if St. John's is going to honor his contract, he is still a university employee and this isn't a dismissal for disciplinary reasons. There is absolutely no reason for Cragg to act as you suggest.

Let's wish Mully a good future and leave it at that. The guy is Our Legend double HOFer and double Gold Medal winner, and he tried, it didn't work out end of story; he lost his brother, after a long and horrible illness --- for crying out loud---, doesn't anybody on here have a heart.

Wish him and his family well and move on.

This constant ill will and even in some cases malicious attacks are getting to me. I hope someone on here agrees with me.

The rest= Give it up.

LOOK FORWARD,

There are very specific clauses in every contract for termination with cause. I'm pretty certain that what you are suggesting does not rise to that level, but if it does, SJU would try to enforce it. Not sure how the discussion went, but quite possibly Cragg intimated that the school would like to make a change, and tried to get Mullin's buy in for it. Quite possible he offered a smaller buyout, and Mullin insisted that he wanted to coach the final two years or be compensated for it.

This isn't a Kevin Ollie situation, where UCONN is maintaining termination with cause for Ollies transgressions.
