Mets 2024 Season

You Gotta Believe!!!
Difference from 1973 is interesting in that 1973 Mets were 7 1/2 games behind and in last place on this day back then and in 2023 they are the 7 games back in the wild card. Today they are 6 games under 500 while in mid August they were 12 games under 500. Anything can happen but I think the 1973 team had better players/pitchers and Tug was Diaz like in the last 2 months. Also [n 1973 a bunch of rivals fell apart down the stretch. But we can only hope the fat Lady hasn't sung yet.

The ‘73 Mets had pitching. Guys also would regularly give you 8 innings. Verlander gave us 6 (!?) whole innings last night. Great performance for 6 innings but…then our bullpen showed up. Buck had to use Robertson in a 7-3 game because the pen did its best to blow the game. Robertson will probably not be available tonight.

Also when does Carrasco pitch again? They keep rolling him out there because they have no one else. It’s become a white flag day. Tough to make up ground when all your starters are 5 and fly guys with a weak pen.

I don’t think 41/36/32 in their prime are walking through the door any time soon

Hitters 3,4,5,6 in the lineup a combined 0-13. The day before they tore the cover off the ball. Convulsive offense good one day, non existent the next. Tonight it might be the pitching. Exactly the way the Mets have played ALL season long. Zero consistency in any aspect of the game.

Robertson traded as the Mets wave the white flag
Not a surprise. Season was going nowhere. They got two rookie ball lottery tickets. Robertson was on a 1 year deal and honestly maybe they can sign him again in the winter for the 8th inning role, the role he was really suppose to fill to begin with.

Now until the end of the season is going to be a bullpen adventure to put it mildly. I guess it doesn’t matter but it’s going to get ugly.

I was thinking he was the last guy I would trade assuming he would be popular with contenders and price may go up when closer to deadline. Also moving Pham or Canha does not end remote hope. Roberstson does. Now it sounds like Verlander might go too.

Only got the 18th and 21st rated prospects in the marlins minor league system for a reliever with a 2.05 era who filled the closer role for the Mets. I wouldn't let Eppler make any trades. wait for Stearns or whoever to get here after the season.

Pretty sure they will be ranked higher in our farm system.

I do not have a big problem with the trade. When you trade for 18-19 year olds, it is purely a lottery ticket because rarely kids that young and in rookie ball rated very high.

Marlins probably gave a list of players to choose from and they picked those two. The Vargas kid sounds interesting.

Roberson is on an expiring contract. He could even be resigned and be the eighth inning guy next year, which was the original plan.

Pham and Canha are likely next. Cannot see the big two being dealt, but maybe Quintana.

Whatever. Season is a disaster. Turn the page ASAP.

If you’re gonna trade in-division, you should be winning that trade hands down. There are still 4 days before the deadline, relief pitchers are always a hot commodity and Robertson was their number one asset…you can’t sugarcoat any of that. He was worth more than this.

Last season he was traded by the Cubs to the Phillies for Ben Brown the Phillies 26th prospect.

The prospect rankings get updated in august. One guy from baseball prospectus said Vargas will be at least #6 in our system when the new rankings come out
Yup. I saw the same thing. People get too caught up in these rankings though.

The two kids they got are literally 18 and 19 years old. The “ranking” is completely fluid at this stage for them. I am not suggesting we just got Ronald Acuna but what they did is got two decent very young prospects. The Mets “depth” in the farm system has been a major problem for years. Some good higher guys but little after that.

The new draft class from early July has not been felt yet either. Here you add two more kids for a 38 year old reliever who (if they want) they can re-sign as a FA in October. This season is lost. If people are upset by this they are really gonna be tweaked when Pham and Canha are jettisoned. Oh, and Verlander has been rumored to Texas.

I don’t understand the catcher part of the trade, I guess I should have specified that.

I also hate Eppler, should have never been allowed near this franchise with his crappy, mediocre, track record lol.

When GMs trade players at the deadline who are going to be free agents at the end of the season they take into consideration what are their chances of resigning that player after the season.
Maybe Robertson doesn’t like playing in Fla and the Mets figure they have a decent chance of getting him back for next season.

Guinness why don’t you like the catcher part of the trade? This kid is at least 3-4 years away. If ever. However, if he’s good and you have other catchers they can always trade from strength?

I agree on Eppler. I don’t trust him. He had lots of assets with the Angels and left a mess. Two superstars and little else. Hopefully, they bring someone like David Stearns if not Stearns himself. We’ll see.
